Qixing Mountain, formerly known as Gaoyang Mountain and Tianshi Mountain, is located in Daping Town, Yongding District, Zhangjiajie City. It belongs to the Wuling Mountain area at the junction of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau uplift and the Dongting Lake subsidence area. It is the watershed between the Lishui River Basin and the Yuanjiang River Basin. The terrain is complex and the landforms are diverse. It is mainly mountainous terraces with a maximum altitude of 1,528 meters.
There was a natural village called Qixing Mountain. Later, because the village is located above an average altitude of 1,200 meters, there is no electricity, no roads, and no communications. Therefore, 10 years ago, most of the villagers gradually moved to the vicinity of Daping Town at the foot of the mountain. Now only two or three families are well preserved. They still go up the mountain regularly every year to collect medicine, wild vegetables, and hunt.
The top of Qixing Mountain is a giant hilly terrace with an average temperature of about 9°C, and there is no summer all year round. The forest coverage rate is 87%, mostly shrub forests, of which nearly 2,000 acres of virgin forest are preserved. There are many rare animals and plants here. Animals include macaques, civets, muntjacs, hedgehogs, pangolins, bamboo rats, white noodles, hares, wild boars, wild dogs, wild cats, golden pheasants, spotted chickens, rock eagles, colorful pheasants, weasels, etc., especially red monkeys are the most precious. Plants include tulip tree, Magnolia officinalis, Wuling pine, wild mountain pear, Xishan, thousand-year-old boxwood, Davidia involucrata, Gastrodia elata, Four-liang hemp, Polygonum aviculare, Rhus chinensis, Coptis chinensis, etc.
Qixing Mountain is like a beautiful landscape painting, majestic, steep, wild and changeable. Whether it is trembling forward along the cliffs cut by knives and axes, or passing through the terrifying leech area, it requires the willpower of steel of hikers.
