If your friends want to torture you as a requirement to be friends. It's not worth it, and they should probably be on a watch list somewhere.
I couldn’t agree with you more . Many many years ago now , at the age of 10 yrs old , I was sent to boarding school as was the custom. If that wasn’t bad enough , I joined in the summer term of that school year , whereby everybody had already made friends and so forth . The first couple of days were fine and then it started ……Now , we don’t have known “ hazing” here in England but from day 3 onwards , my life suddenly became hell. Nothing physical or dangerous but just dreadful. After a week of this , I gave up hoping and retreated into myself , kept well away from everyone and started to count off the days till the end of term . Instead , one evening I was approached by all the girls and immediately steeled myself thinking what fresh hell is this going to be . To my amazement , they ALL said sorry , you’ve passed the test , you never complained and you never squealed . I remember being so damn grateful and relieved and to then have friends , some life long. However , as I became more senior in the system , I had no qualms in stamping this out amongst the new juniors and reporting it , if necessary . In England though , it was deemed to be “ character building” . And now in my dotage , I say rather bluntly and irreverently - Stuff That !

I can maybe understand not realizing the dangers of drinking too much water in a short period of time, but waiting an hour to call an ambulance after someone suffers a seizure is not exactly "an accident"
Young people don't make the brightest of decisions, and if none of them have been through a medical emergency before it wouldn't surprise me if some of them hoped he would "get better". Hanlon's Razor makes a bit more sense. Don't attribute malice when incompetence is likely the cause.
And more than likely the ones in charge were drinking copious amounts of alcohol. They knew they were going to be in big trouble, so they delayed calling an ambulance, which gave them even bigger trouble.
Panic brain is stupid. College panic brain even more so.
and when you are wealthy, lacking lots of pigmentation, you can get away with deliberately making poor decisions.

Survivorship bias is employed to justify not changing all kinds of less than desirable behaviours; especially in parenting, for some reason.
eg: "My parents smacked me around, and I turned out fine!" (note: most of these people are definitely not "fine," and are usually perpetuating those cycles with their own families) 😬

There is social value in hazing it has existed since humans existed, many of traditions if done in contexts of current initiation rights be considered hazing such as tattooing. The problem is each progressive generation since we no longer have clearly defined social and cultural rules on initiation rights as we achieve life's milestones, have fools wants to up the ante from what they received and can very quickly get out of had and very few willing stand up say that's enough that going to far they didn't even go that far with us when we were initiated, pull it back.
There were seven pledging deaths in 2019 alone. At one time I thought fraternities were moving away from hazing, but not anymore.
I was in a frat 20+ years ago. and I still find this odd and extreme. Our version of hazing was a drag queen waffle breakfast. Pledges had to shave our legs, dress up as 1950's housewives, and serve a charity waffle breakfast to members of the local community. It was actually a lot of fun. That said, an apology is owed to all women and drag queens everywhere, because we were so unfeminine and awkward that it likely did damage to womankind.😂 I did, however, find out that I look great in a sundress and yellow is apparently my color!😂

Timothy Piazza, who died during hazing at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Penn State in 2017. He was forced to drink lots of alcohol, then fell down stairs, and despite the fraternity members being clearly aware that he was seriously injured, they did not call EMS. Instead, they left him on a couch, all by himself, for more than 12 hours. Eventually, Timothy died from a ruptured pancreas. His live could have been saved if he had been brought to a hospital.
Lawsuits were filed, but eventually Penn State and the fraternity wiggled their way out of harsh consequences.
Hazing is horrible, many young and promising lives lost over puberty power glory and madness.
yes, this was tragic and retribution was never accomplished for this poor kid and his family........it reeks of these Universities' trying to cover up things like this.....reminds me of the many rapes that occur at colleges and rarely are they ever prosecuted or pursued.......sad.

I joined a fraternity during rush week, and afterwards the Wednesday nights "on the line" began. All manner of psychological terror and manipulation began, including instance of gross things, like this unknown "stew" poured over us (and we cleaned it all up). Other days of the week, there was indiscriminate bullying, meant to throw you off your game. Imagine trying to study throughout this! I took six weeks of this, but with six weeks left to the semester, I broke and reported the abuse. The frat shut down for a few years -- I don't know how long -- but it's back now. Still, I did what I deeply felt I had to do. And I saved my semester.
Good on you. Many victims decide not to say anything and it eventually results in death. You possibly saved someones life.
@@HooLeePhucingSheet Thank you for your kind words. I was looking after my own mental health at the time, but later I did think I'd looked after my fellow pledges, even through they all hated me. I forgive the pledges I rushed with. They knew not what they did; but I did. That was the difference.

You're more brave than any of the frat members who successfully made it through the hazing, because you were willing to "ruin all the fun" in order to keep yourself and others safe. I've watched enough Fascinating Horror to see the danger in doing idiotic things for fun and the wisdom of turning down that "fun" in order to stay safe. You did the right thing and it doesn't matter if anyone is mad at you for it. 💖
@@czntrm Thank you. That means a lot to me. I've never thought about it as brave, just self-preservation. But I know in retrospect what I had to do, and it was hard. I had to face the brothers at a university meeting. I didn't give an inch.

Putting 18-20 year olds in charge of the lives of others is so incredibly dangerous. They almost never have the experience or knowledge to appreciate that people could very well die. Authorized college events--like football games--often have EMTs right next to the field, and that's for a very good reason.
Not all 18 - 20 year olds are frat jerks. Some people go to college to learn.

20~ under is not enough years to be able to have the experience of knowing what is or isn't a dangerous emergency.
At that age we should be considering what we would do and/or talking to those experienced in emergencies about them. Actual emergencies are NOT the time to practice your emergency skills
They also don't have a fully developed frontal lobe, which manages movement, expressive language and higher level executive functions (= cognitive skills including the capacity to plan, organise, initiate, self-monitor and control one's responses in order to achieve a goal). The frontal lobe is only fully developed at around 25 years old
I'm sure plenty of those EMTs on the side of the field are younger than 20 - near colleges they are often mostly student volunteers. I was a certified EMT-B and firefighter by the time I was 18 which is not uncommon. Most young people aren't like this, I think frat culture is disgusting but even most frat culture isn't like this. This isn't representative of young people, and if this channel has shown anything it's that poor decision making isn't limited to any one group. Plenty of 20 year old nurses, teachers, firefighters, etc. who understand the responsibility they hold, and plenty of 50 year olds who will put next quarters profits over human lives.
I have never understood why hazing activities have to be so brutal. Why not make the pledges endure nine weeks of volunteering at a local food pantry or helping veterans mow their lawns? I know it sounds like trivial work, but having to give up multiple weekends to help someone else is NOT a trivial sacrifice for someone that young, and it would help someone as well.
It was t part of her hazing, but my Grandmother when she was in a sorority at her women’s college they all were required to volunteer time tutoring or doing other charity things as part of membership.
In Portugal, in recent memory, at least two different hazing situations killed half a dozen people at the same time. One had people being buried under a collapsed wall and on the other, being dragged by waves and drown, because they were tied up to each other by the sea shore. These activities should be outlawed for good. I absolutely said no when I went to the university and suffered threats and harassmenf for it, but at least I didn't die.

I never understood Greek Life in College - I wasn’t gonna pay $500+ a month to be beat up and (possibly) killed, over the idea of ‘brotherhood’
Yeah, I don't get it. The worst "hazing" my fraternity pulled was an annual waffle breakfast we put on for charity, where all the pledges dressed up as 1950's housewives, and served waffles to people. We actually had fun, made a butt load of money for a good cause, and nobody got hurr. And as an added bonus, I found out that my butt looks good in a sundress!😂

This only seems to be a thing in the US, I've never heard of any other countries having these fraternities and sororities. It seems to be generally a bad idea, it enforces the in-crowd, the gang against everyone else.
I wanted to join a sorority but I immediately left the room when they wanted to us to do rituals, or hazing activities. Such as going around the university naked and stuff like that, I was like nope. The next day one of the leaders got arrested for putting one of the newbies in the hospital.
I’m so glad I didn’t stick around it could’ve been so much worse. I’m sorry to the families that happened to their loved ones. 😢🕊️
Your comment points out something that shouldn't be ignored. Each person confronted with hazing requirements can refuse to participate. I say this not to blame the victims, but to remind myself and anyone who reads this that we each are responsible for our own choices.
Having said that, any group who organizes hazing that puts life and limb at risk ought to be abolished and disbanded. If they actually cause injury or death, they should be prosecuted for that. Where there is a national organization, it should also be held responsible for allowing any chapter to do this.
I fully agree with the person who commented that hazing should be limited to acts of public service. All other forms should be banned with strict penalties for violating the ban.
@@eywine.7762 It's good to phrase it as a reminder. Hazing for fraternities and sororities is in some ways especially pernicious because of the age group. Yes, they're adults (mostly - a very few people go to university at 17 or extremely rarely even younger), but they still tend to think of themselves as invincible and no one ever thinks something could go this badly wrong. A lot of people don't really recognise the risks in an activity until later on in life, and even if they do recognise them peer pressure is still very effective at that age. Asking someone very seriously, "You know you don't actually have to do this, right?" actually can be a very simple way of making them realise that.... well, no, they don't!
@@littlebear274You're right and I can remember that feeling of invincibility and also that I knew everything I need to know about life. Reality seeps through to us eventually if we survive long enough.
My frat just did silly stuff like painting a giant chess board, having us dress up as chess pieces, then using us to play a game.

I never had a chance to meet my uncle Gerald, as he was killed in a hazing decades before I was born. The way my father told me, he was pledging for Sigma Pi's UC Berkeley chapter. Him and at least two others had sacks put over their heads before they were dumped on a country road with the task to find their way back to campus. Either before they could get the sacks off or while they were finding their way back, a truck passing over a hill couldn't see them and struck them, killing my uncle. My grandmother dreaded the year my father spent at Berkeley because of what happened. My sister and I have looked into some other hazing deaths (she showed me this video in fact) and we agree that it was a small mercy that Gerald's death wasn't one of the more brutal hazings that have murdered people.
So many of the perpetrators of these rituals have got away with killing a fellow student. It's heartbreaking. One of them who was sent to prison said he had to live with the disability of being a felon for the rest of his life for his part in the death of one of his fellow students. That isn't a disability. It's a consequence of his own stupidity. A disability is a life long health condition. He was deluded

Calling having to live with the consequences of bullying somebody to death is not a disability, and calling it that is an insult to all disabled people. I had friends in high school who wanted to go to a “hen party”, a bush party where seniors could haze grade 10-11s, and if we didn’t go, we couldn’t attend when we were seniors.
I was like “wtf” and went to a movie and had an awesome night with my boyfriend…. They had to sneak out, get abused and wasted and regret their weekend.
Saw them Monday, I was feeling great and they looked like morons and said they shouldn’t have gone. They got beat up. Kids are stupid. College kids are still kids too.

Not all fraternities and/or sororities require an individual to be hazed before entry. But be real… It’s not the fraternity or the sorority. It’s the people in them.

In my country, we have many cases of law school hazing. In one case, frat men from one of the top ranking law schools in the country had beaten a neophyte so badly that he ended up having a heart attack and died. The men who were found to have been liable for the death of a neophyte ended up going on to become lawyers despite the criminal case.
I hope they were always disgusted by themselves for doing so, but I have my doubts

The first and last case reminds me of Sanda Dia, a Belgian student who of a hazing ritual. He was 20.
Dia was obliged to drink fish oil, and alcoholic drinks and stand outdoors in freezing water, amongst being subject to other humiliating and degrading acts. After collapsing, he was driven to hospital where he died of multiple organ failure two days later. His death was attributed to the salt content in the fish oil he ingested.
Four years later (!!!) the accused, all ‘upperclass’ sons of lawyers, magistrates, and judges, were fined €400 each and sentenced to 200 or 300 hours of community service by the Antwerp Court of Appeal. This means their criminal record stays empty. And obviously, they stay anonymous.
A Belgian RUclipsr called Acid put their names online and was also persecuted although this went quicker. He received a three-month suspended prison sentence and a €800 fine for the crime. This will be noted on his criminal record.
This caused many to believe Belgium has a class-based justice. Being “unwillingly” responsible for the death of somebody is a much lighter crime than giving these people a name and thus attacking their privacy!

Mild hazing is often normal in groups like that, its often part of male bonding but you never brag about it, and it should never be something that causes physical harm. It should be kept private within the group.
You have the peer pressure of the group that says this is normal and we've been doing it for generations, and the acceptance and validation by the colleges. That reinforces its legitimacy.

I'm a CPP graduate and this is my first time ever hearing the Case of Kenny Luong. Hazing is something that should not be a requirement of college Greek life. Brotherhood and sisterhood on campuses should only be proven by students having each other's backs rather than having to prove loyalty in deadly stunts.
I finished my degree several years before Kenny Luong, but I attended Cal Poly Pomona. And stories like these make me feel better about not pledging a fraternity.

I am so glad that the main Greek organization on my college’s campus kicked me out of recruitment for missing a detail on an outfit we were supposed to wear during rush week. Because of that I saved a TON of money, avoided a lot of drama, and ended up joining a service sorority in the independent-level Greek organization where I met people I do still call sister today.
You don’t have to torture people to bond with them. Turns out you can just… do meaningful stuff together. Crazy, I know.
The Monmouth hazing was genuinely an accident, that’s so sad.
The passing of Kenny, on the other hand, was not. The fact that no charges were pursued is mind boggling with how many forms of torture they used. Wild that it’s a nationally recognized frat.

@@user-qv4np3ur5w i think there was probably somewhat of a Western misconception that Asians wouldn’t be capable of something like this. Non-Asian Americans, for whatever cultural reason, tend to perceive them as timid and polite.
In 2005 people were only just coming to terms with how dangerous and stupid football can be. If we're gonna hold the same standards any 6 year old that's played on the beach for a significant period of time could tell you sand holes are likely to collapse.
But that was masculinity, especially back then, you're supposed to just charge into things and not think about it.

@@shortking-vp9vv yeah I agree alot of people don't think about it. We only think about how dangerous it is to tackle each other because we have quite a bit of media having told us so in the last decade or so.
It was very normalized in prior decades. Like yeah you risk minor injuries, boys are (were) expected to risk minor injuries. It's what made them men!
Only in recent years have we really started to try to make people aware how debilitating alot of these injuries can be and how serious brain damage is.
Mind you back then even the medical industry was just starting to realize how damaging even minor concussions can be. It's why there's been a push to ban contact sports, especially for kids, in recent years where in decades past that would have been unheard of.
TLDR you realize now how dangerous sand holes can be only because you were told and saw an example of it going bad. The history of football safety is the same. People aren't generally aware of things until they're told, even if they could figure it out if they just thought a little harder about it.
This is a huge problem in many countries and are underestimated in many case (at least in France). Good for you to bring awareness on this human stupid brutality.
The only hazing rituals that should be allowed are works of public service.

I like that idea. I had to perform x hours of community service in order to graduate high school. Frats implementing public service would be great.
@@ValdrVideo My fraternity’s “hazing” consisted of three weekends of community service (trash pickup, food kitchen, local version of habitat for humanity), learning the fraternity motto/history/values/etc, and a final beerpong tournament. Pledges and first years also have to be the designated DD for parties more often.
Sure, a pledge would get the “worst” job for the volunteer work, but someone is gonna be assigned to clean pots or haul trash bags no matter what group shows up to volunteer.
Pledges, being noobs and thus bad, tend to go out of the tournament early. So if anything, our “hazing” had them drink less than the rest of us.
Obviously, we met and interacted with other frats that hazed with cruel intent. Never got the point. People still came to our parties, we still had bros for our events, and we still had a huge connection network post graduation. I don’t think ritualistically torturing each other would have improved that.
Yeah! And instead of stealing, thieves should assist the elderly! And there should be fuzzy kitties to pley with in commuter trains! ....these are frat boys. We are not talking about "the best and the brightest" here.
And, maybe being compelled to walk around campus wearing underwear on the outside of one’s clothes.
In my country, last week happened something definitely fit for this channel: A man was working in the repair of a septic pumping machine, at the bottom of a well with two other men helping. They started feeling bad and tried to go up but just two of them could make ut out and the remaining one died in the spot. Later that day, 5 firefighter workers came to explore and retrieve the body and they also died. The whole thing is still in investigation

@@ariblue400 oh okay that's horrible. Not the first time gas build up killed workers and then their rescuers. FH could probably do a multi story episode on it like he's done with the hazings and work place accidents.
It's alot more common than people think it is and why rescuers have taken on the motto "don't become another victim."
There's alot to explore just in the history of that statement.
Confined space entry is incredibly dangerous and people don't even think about it. So many rules written in blood.

Hazing is basically organized bullying. It has absolutely nothing to do with brotherhood. The fact that there are so many people in this world who willingly participate in perpetrating these vicious actions on other human beings makes me sick.
How about the pathology of those who need this membership so badly that they're willing to kill themselves to belong?
A college education won't cure that level of stupidity either.
Groups of individuals like this are sadistic in nature to me, maybe not everyone but individuals with dark triad personalities are certainly attracted to a setting like this. Some of the most dangerous individuals in history were members of groups like this because their dark personality traits are acceptable and, as the individual realizes, rewarded by other aspects of many societies later in life. They seek positions of power like government, judges, and corporate institutions, where they can manipulate others and harm many with their personality reflected in policies. Greek society collapsed for a reason. These older individuals also shield younger ones from responsibility because they hold powerful positions.
Just a little aside, Monmouth university was used as a set location for the movie "Annie." The University centerpiece, Wilson Hall, was used as Daddy Warbucks' mansion.
You know, my dad said that his fraternity initiation in the early 1950s involved catching eggs. Simpler times, I guess. Another good show!

They're called accidents for a reason. None of these kids join a fraternity with the intent to hurt or unalive someone. Assuming they're rich kids is also wildly incorrect. Plenty of boys from lower to middle income families have joined fraternities.
Also, using serious labels like "bully" loosely like you have will only lead people to become desensitized to the term. Please be aware.

As an outsider looking in, the concept of fraternities and pledging and willingly being tortured and humiliated to join is very strange to me.
It would be interesting to cover hazing amongst other types of groups - I remember sometime around 2011-2015ish there was an incident of hazing in a university marching band that made national news, and I feel like I’ve heard stories about similar incidents with sports teams too. My university took a hard line on hazing and even something as simple as having pledges wear a pin during pledging was scrutinized by admin. But better that than a tragic death or bullying!

I was a member of a fraternity. Yes, i was hazed, some of it humorous, and some of it physical and degrading. It was hard, but i did it. I became an officer in the fraternity and supported it the best that I could and I had a great time. I excelled and won best sophomore and junior awards. That is until my ex and I broke up. My ex was in a sorority that many of my "brothers" were dating her sisters. After the breakup, false lies and rumors soon spread and I was soon shunned by all. Some of my so-called "brothers" were even good friends that I graduated high school with. I would not recommend joining a collegiate Greek organization to anyone.

There is a version called flag football. The players have a colored piece of cloth tucked into their belt. "Tackling" is done by grabbing the flag of your opponent. Sometimes it's even played co-ed. It's considered a fun activity, and is surely less dangerous than tackle football. Nevertheless, I'm sure people get hurt sometimes. But yes, playing tackle football without proper gear is a bad idea. Flag football would be a better "team building" activity for most people. Better yet, beach volleyball, or basketball.

Felony is not a "disability", that is a term for something worthy of compassion and understanding for circumstances that can't be helped. That young man was immature, but was still old enough to have that basic compassion and appreciation for human dignity -- that's why they took such delight in the *indignity* of the hazing. He chose to become a felon, and isn't deserving of sympathy for that. Forgiveness, perhaps, but I'm kinda bothered that he was insensitive enough to equate his actions with "disability."

i went to chico ten years ago and during orientation they informed us about that hazing incident among others and detailed the strict no hazing policy that was enacted as a result. interesting to learn that phi tau wasnt affiliated at the time. when i went i believe they were affiliated but they were almost universally despised for being the most belligerent and stereotypical frat in town.
that's sad though. Mild hazing can be a wonderful comradery ritual if done correctly. the problem is it can often allow sadists to take over because of the one-upsmanship that often happens with hazing, and strict controls should be put in place, like no hazing ritual can be done without approval from a more experienced group, and nothing that involves actual physical harm.
@@hengineer oh don’t worry they still did “hazing” it was just fun harmless stuff like pranks or silly stuff you’d get up to with your roommates. sometimes it was helping with acts of service for the other frats and sororities, which was nice. but no longer will you find actually dangerous or humiliating hazing like making them walk around in the cold night in only their underwear (another hazing incident we were informed of).
the camaraderie was still alive and well when i was there but by the time i left (pre-covid) the old guard was lamenting the new pledges’ general belligerency and proclivity for cocaine. no idea what it’s like now

Given how obviously stupid and dangerous some hazing stories I've heard are, that sand one is surprisingly innocent. I can see why the people involved might have thought that it would be safe.
That was my thought too! I expected it to be some crazy midnight dig in the cold of winter that caused hypothermia, or like a "buried alive" ritual gone wrong, but it was really innocuous, as far as hazing goes. Can totally see why nobody thought it would be dangerous.
It probably would have been "safer" if they hadn't made them dig so deep. But the risk is always there when dealing with sand.

I tried pledging to a sorority when I was in college. I got as far as them bringing us into the basement of their house one night just to yell at us about doing shit wrong (which was like...maybe a couple weeks in?) and realized I had too much self-worth to go through that nonsense. Like...I have absolutely zero problem with wanting to be part of a Greek organization. We're all pack animals, at the end of the day, and we crave belonging to a group. It's not bad in itself. The hazing shit, however, is ridiculous.
Fortunately, the next year I got into an honors fraternity and it was one of the best things I joined during college. Our pledge activities were mandatory study nights and then games afterward (which did, admittedly, go til midnight, but were otherwise 100% harmless and truly DID bond us together). I'm still friends with some of them over 20 years later. I can't judge these kids for wanting so desperately to belong that they'd go through all that, but I will say that, as bad as my self-esteem has always been, I feel fortunate that I was able to stand up for myself.
In my opinion sororities are worse because there seems to be more straight up hatred in them. After the hazing at least there's brotherhood in fraternities but from the outside at least it seemed like the girls still hated each other once members. Even after fist fighting you're still bros. But girls tear each other's souls out...I'm aware this is probably an incredibly ignorant take.
How to get away with murder: "It was just a hazing, bro."
You can make an experience unpleasant or challenging without endangering life. The outcomes of so many of these examples was foreseeable:
-digging a large hole in sand has a high risk of collapse and suffocation.
-doing anything to excess is dangerous (drinking water, not sleeping, exercising, etc)
-deliberate and repeated physical assaults have the risk of going too far or going beyond what an individual’s body can handle
-you should NEVER ignore certain signs and always should get medical assistance for things like: seizures, difficulty rousing someone or finding someone not responsive to external stimuli, sudden onset/severe headaches, signs of shock, among other symptoms.
I don't think digging a hole in the sand is foreseeable for many, for about the past 3 years I've seen stories of people dying in that manner. People underestimate sand and how heavy just a couple of feet is. Honestly until I saw the first story about it, I wouldn't have thought about that consequence.

It both saddens and amazes me that some people can have the capacity to cause suffering and harm to other people just for the lulz. This is why I prefer pets.

This topic also has very few incidents that have actually been shown to be incidences of hazing. A lot of them are just ambiguous incidents in college while drinking with some insinuation of the involvement of a fraternity or sorority combined with the age of the person involved. I don't think I recall the first part having had any instances or examples where there was actually anything but theoretical, unproven examples of problems and then attempts at guilt by association, innuendo and so on to make it sound like it was anything else.
College-age people drink and often don't have a lot of experience with it. When they attend their schools, particularly in their freshman years they're generally very unfamiliar with the area, and don't necessarily have the best judgment regarding their activities. This leads to all kinds of issues and deaths and almost none of them relate to Greek Life.
I wasn't very sensible or mature when I was 17, but I knew I had zero interest in joining a fraternity, and part of that was rejecting the idea of humiliating myself or risking injury.
The first story of the three is an unexpected good reminder that events meant to be entirely student organized don't have to intend harm to accidentally become unsafe, if adult monitors are there or aren't smart enough to see problems coming. I remember other university tragedies of this kind being covered. Given the extreme nightmare stories of hazing as abuse, starting with a story like this is a good reminder that the life-threatening issues start well before there are those levels of callousness present.
The last two of the three hazing stories are more expected, sadly, and horrendous because, clearly, the line of malicious intent was crossed. Both the individuals doing the harm and the entire fraternity, (present or absent) during the events could have seen the incredible danger here coming, and it's really surprising to hear that the organizations weren't ALL held to account legally and didn't ALL have to cease existing. Sure, it's important to bring individual charges, but these are often group attacks with institutional legacy allowing them to become what they are. Institutions should be accountable too.
Lawyers hate this one simple trick to avoid liability - simply don't have insurance for your organisation! Individual charges are a lot harder as well since you have to prove that each individual passed the threshold for liability, and when it's a group involved it's quite easy for people to be able to pass the buck around when they're being held accountable separately. "You can't prove it was MY fault. There were five other people there! They were the ones taking things too far, I was just there and too scared to say anything!" Meanwhile the other five are all saying the same thing in their own separate cases.
Hazing should just be pledges placed in one of those escape rooms that they have to work together to get out of, given a task like a scavenger hunt, or just something silly like having to put on a drag show. They should be activities that build rapport and create a cooperative environment. Hazing, at its core, is just an excuse for existing fraternity members to relentlessly bully other students. They know how badly the pledges want to get in, which gives them free reign on the level of torture they put them through.
No, that's not what hazing is. You might wonder if Greek Life, with its centuries of experience, actually knows a bit about bonding.
While these severe hazing incidents are horrendous, at any given year there are around 250,000 active members of Greek Life in the US. Compare that to the number of actual deaths and you might notice that those students who are not involved in Greek Life actually have a greater rate of injury and death, particularly with regard to things Greek Life also generally provides that isn't as convenient planned alone.
A problem with hazing is that the incentive is always to take things slightly further, year after year, because the trauma-bonding doesn't work as well with the younger pledges if they suffer less than you have
It might as well be pushed by the will to see someone suffering for our entertainment, probably the same will that makes us pull pranks on each other.

We just tragically lost a 7 yr old girl here in FL when she and her brother dug a deep hole on the beach which collapsed on them. People don't seem to perceive the danger involved. RIP William and all the others who died as a result of hazing
It's amazing how in the first one they made every effort to scare but not harm and threw all pretenses aside as soon as their friend was in danger, but the other two cases they were clearly playing fast and loose with their "friends" lives.
A tradition of bonding over something as stupid as I was treated like shit and tortured during hell week so you have to be as well! Don't we all feel closer now? Just what the actual fuck. I guess the rich folk connections that can be made in fraternities and last a life time are worth it if you live to enjoy them?!
A lot of things people want take sacrifice and the effort isn't enjoyable. Building a career, buying a house and completing the mortgage, earning the money to buy things, learning to play a musical instrument, etc.
I still remember visiting Colorado Spring and I'd forgotten all my Xanax and Vicodin and the sudden cessation made me unable to sleep. Down the street from our youth hostel, these poor girls getting hazed by a sorority were made to dance and repeat some chant that ended in WHEEEEW! starting at the break of dawn. I can still hear it. They were dressed in a dumb outfit. I listen to it go on for 4 hours. I almost went down there and sprayed them down with a hose.
It's maddening that so many of these perpetrators are let go by the courts or at the most, they see very little punishment.
As someone who went through fraternity hazing themselves, it really is crucial that those brothers do pay attention for any bad signs. Luckily not something I ever had to deal with

Many of them, the ones goading the younger members on (like the last one), are sadistic bullies, who’ve never been held accountable for their actions.
"Good causes" can blind people, so does groupthink. If they believe that they are doing something good such as "we are unifying the pledges/newcomers/freshmen and building up our power as an institution" or such, they would probably not stop to question whether they are doing any harm.
Many of the ones leading the activities also went through it themselves, or a similar version, and think that because they did it, the activity is doable and safer.
How do cops not realise they are torturing people.......to death? And there really is no excuse - cops are older and have training. Some people are sadists and the look for opportunities to do harm to other people.

Should also take into account that being in a sand hole can be dangerous. Anyone who has buried themselves partially would know that
I think it might be partially because it's something that kids do that people see it as innocent and harmless. Just digging around on the beach. But most kids digging around on the beach don't have any real tools, they're using their hands or little plastic shovels that break easily and things like that. And surface level sand seems like not a big deal, it comes off you really easily for the most part. If they're determined they can still reach a dangerous threshold (some of the comments mention that apparently this happened very recently in Florida which I hadn't heard about, how awfully sad) but the vast majority of people would never have gotten that far or know of someone who did.
Just one of the many reasons I had no desire whatsoever to join a sorority when I was in college. I don't know if they haze like fraternities. But either way, I knew what hazing was, and I didn't even want the chance of having any part of it. And even if they only did the milder stuff, I'm socially awkward and embarrass myself enough on my own, lol, I don't need anyone else to do it for me. Plus I have sensory issues, and there are things I simply cannot force myself to eat/do, no matter how much I want to, or who is screaming at me to do it. Couple that with my social anxiety and RDS, and that would actually be a nightmare scenario, to me. I knew without even thinking about it that sorority life wouldn't be a good fit for me.
And I knew they'd know it too, and they probably wouldn't accept me anyway. I'm not a girly-girl. I don't wear Uggs or dress cute, I prefer to go without and makeup, may hair is always a mess no matter how hard I try, lol, and I don't drink Starbucks, or enjoy going to big loud parties. And that's okay with me. I am who I am, and I love me. I didn't/don't need any validation, from anyone else. But I wouldn't have fit in with those girls.
(Not that all sorority girls are that way, or do that stuff, but most of the sisters I saw, were and did.)
Nah, I'd just much rather spend my time by my introverted self, or, sometimes, with my very close circle. I like to live life by my own rules, on my own terms, answering to no one but me myself. Always have, always will. So that's exactly what I've always done, and exactly what I always will do.
But I'm not judging. Sorority/fraternity life might not have been for me, but others love it, and that's okay. I just wish they'd tone down on their hazing. Or do nice things like volunteer, like others said. You don't need to do dangerous stuff to prove your loyalty, or to bond. In fact, I feel like doing volunteer community service for others, showing human love, would bond me to someone way better than that other crazy stuff.
All these stories are tragically sad. The first one, though, I feel like was just a horrible accident, that came about out of ignorance of just how dangerous sand can be. But the others are just stupid, STUPID macho bravado. This stuff should never happen. Those kids should NEVER have had to die. I'm so sorry for all their loved ones.
I was a student in public schools in California in the 1970s. As I recall, every student handbook, whether in high school, or at UC Irvine, expressly forbade hazing. It is nuts that this sort of thing was (is?) still happening decades later. A friend of mine in college joked about the fraternity ITK, for "I Tappa Kegga." That seemed to be an appropriate moniker for most of them. }
When my mom was in college in the 1950s, being a member of a fraternity or sorority was practically required if you wanted any kind of social life. Even her mom had to endure hazing a generation before that. I never saw the point of being a member myself. I had nothing to do with the "greeks." And they are nowhere near as popular now.

I was a founding member of the Penn State chapter of Zeta Beta Tau in 1987. I was the first Pledge Trainer. We did very little hazing and the national fraternity banned pledging altogether by 1990. The problem was that we started to allow anybody into the fraternity and the quality of members started to decline.

Congratulation to people who passed their "initiation" for their fraternity. They just gained valuable abussive and untrustworthy people that will forever chase them for the rest of their lives. All their pain is so worth it. But for real, if I want a circle of friends, I don't need them needlessly to hurt or humiliate me when a barely know them. That thing comes after when you have real bonds with your friends and even with that doesn't go to an extent like these fraternity groups have been doing to their recruits.

The boards are probably full of fraternity members too.
It's probably a combination factors - Greek Life draws students to schools, the groups probably pay the schools, and it's not like the groups tell the school (most of the time) what they're going to do. The schools don't get involved until something goes wrong. Also, some houses are not on school campuses, so they're not monitored the same.
Schools have had anti-hazing policies for decades.
I just don't get it. Here's what you should do: when the new members have been selected, everybody gets together. The president of the fraternity gets up and says a few words of welcome. Then you have the ceremonial tapping of the keg, bring out the pizza and hot wings and have a party. Good conversation, lots of laughs and wonderful memories. Have I missed something important? Would pain, torment and humiliation improve the evening? If so, how?
i really appreciate you covering the story of kenny luong. im currently a student at uci and am not affiliated myself, but know plenty of people who are. when i first got here in 2021, there was a huge amount of attention on hazing with the recent passing of noah domingo. im disappointed that the culture here hasnt changed, and it continues to get worse. entire frats are being banned for the stupidest reasons.

I know a guy who had red barn paint painted on his face. It had creosote in it and would not come off. He was in the hospital several days. They ended up shutting down the chapter at JSU over the matter.
Good video this. Had no idea what Hazing was or indeed that there had been related accidents around Hazing.
Got a few of ideas for you to at least consider doing in the near future that I think you can make a good job on a video on.
1. Japan Air Lines Flight 123 - After a minor landing incident 7 years earlier, a Boeing 747 carrying 524 passengers and crew on a flight from Tokyo to Osaka, suffered a servers structural failure, which made the plane crashed into a mountain side and resulting in only 4 survivors. To this day, its remains the deadliest single aircraft disaster in aviation history.
2. Eruption on Mt Pelée in 1902 - After several warnings about the destruction of the town of St Pierre, the volcano went on to obliterated the towns population in a matter of seconds leaving some 30,000 citizens suffocated and burnt.
3. (This one admittedly is a bit more out there in terms of whether you want to call this an accident or not compered to ones you've already covered where no one gets killed in, but to me it was an incident that taught an important lesson in how to operate heavy and complicated machines like steam trains)
Blue Peter rail tour on 1st October 1994 - A steam hauled excursion train pulled out of Durham station, before the locomotive when into a long violent 35 second wheel slip, which having been calculated at reaching 140+ MPH would go on to destroy the locomotives running gear, as well as severely injuring the driver and leaving several others in shock.
9 weeks is insane! Be a GDI - God Damn Independent! Anyone who says you have to pay & be tortured to become “brothers” is not a friend you want. There are better people out there who will love & support you for free. Hazing is so dangerous & stupid!
I think ours was about 9 weeks. It isn't for 99% of people, but it was right for me. I was so lonely and miserable I was planning to use my last funds to off myself. Paying for friends was a final move of despairation. I was forced (willingly) into extreme social situations that helped me. Just approaching someone and talking to them or joining a group seemed impossible before.

Back in the early 80’s, I pledged for the fraternity Lambda Lambda Lambda at Adam’s College. The things Booger made me do. I still get nightmares to this day!

Digging a hole in lose material like sand is incredibly dangerous, and football pads and helmets were introduced because the sport was in danger of getting banned because of the number of serious injuries. I get that your average teenager might not be aware of that, but still 🤦♀️
Kind of a random comment, but I'm from California, and not calling them "UCI" and "CalPoly" amuses me. There are so many University of California colleges and California State Universities here, we just abbreviate them all. UC Berkley, Cal State San Marcos, SDSU, all of that. I cannot understand why hazing is even practiced. In the military, we have what some people call "beast barracks". There, new recruits are pushed to the limits of their physical and mental capacities. However, there is a real and necessary purpose for that: to separate those who have the desired strength of character and abilities from those who do not. A recruit can refuse to participate or be asked to leave at any time. The instructors are trained professionals with many years of experience. Even so, there have been accidents leading to deaths or severe injuries. But that's the army not at a university fraternity. I see nothing useful that can be gained by any participant in hazing. It is akin to bullying and should not be allowed.
My father, a Marine colonel, once told me a brave man will ignore his fear screaming “don’t do this!” because it’s something that HAS to be done. A fool will ignore it for something that DOESN’T have to be done.

Frats here have generally gotten away from hazing, and gone more towards charity events, competing with other frat houses ( like organized bike rides or marathons).
This gives the public a much better image of fraternity and sorority houses...
