The mural looks amazing. Really are living the dream! You should have all the Epic guests who visit the garden sign the wall as a mini memorial it would be a great way to track who comes through!
This video almost made me cry when you got to your pond! All the forethought, care, and execution is exactly what I've been wanting to do for my own property. The permeable flagstone patio on top of the aquablocks, the rainwater refill, the pond water for irrigation, and the thoughtful plantings that contribute to water quality/fish habitat/water retention/food, is just *chef's kiss*. Can't wait to see how it, the rest of your property, and you evolve over the years!
Agree, would love to see the breakdown on the irrigation to the beds. I’m planning to run irrigation to our garden off of our well when we get a chance.
Looking amazing! Really turning into an oasis back there. I’ve seen a lot from Californian’s lately about the water restrictions destroying their gardens. It’s great that the epic homestead can be so self sustaining.
I'm excited for the possibility of bees. I'm much too scared to try it myself, after hearing of guard bees chasing down neighbors, but I love the idea!
I also bought a home in 2020 and have been planting since. I made a container garden on the front and back porch and planted in ground all over. Have also started upcycling large wooden crates as raised beds. I LOVE GARDENING!!!👩🌾
I was always curious about your stunning MURAL, and am so glad to come across the story behind it. Every single element is so charming and thoughtful, and the artwork is absolutely beautiful. Congrats 🎉🎉
Another vote for using the empty space for a 3 sisters experiment (or variation substituting sunflowers for corn, watermelons for squash, etc. I think it’d be great!
I vote for till and grow a melon patch. That spot will be productive but it’s nothing permanent. Plus the chicks would probably love some watermelon treats.
I love seeing how it’s all come together! You know, might not be a bad idea to get yourself a few baby pigmy goats. They’d feed on the overgrowth area, give you more nutrients for the soil in the form of manure, and you’d eventually get some fresh goat’s milk out of the deal. Just imagine the cuteness!
That mural looks great!!! I love that you have included all the elements of the Epic homestead. The chicken are sooo big now! How about "Silvie" or Silvia as the name for the silver one. How is Bobka with the chickies? Does she leave them alone?
Wow that's a crazy amount of work those driplines... Regarding the cover crops, the answer is easy : squash down the lot instead of chopping it, and mulch it. You can direct plant in it about 2-3 weeks later, provided it rains on it or that you water it. Sadly in San Diego you'll probably have to water it so it decomposes. You can then plant tomatoes and stuff directly in it. If you want corn or squashes, add some manure, grass clippings or compost underneath the mulch, half that half wood chips, and it works great. If your cover crop has done its job, you shouldn't need to till it. Growing stuff in your native soil is much much better than in raised beds. Also, you should do a flower patch in this cover crop area as well. Some perennials, shrubs, herbs, that kind of thing. The diversity of microbes that it provides will actually helps your veggies grow (if they're planted not far from them). And in case you didn't know, in hot summers like yours, tomatoes and squashes prefer to grow in part shade. In the South of France, people will add a shading cloth to their greenhouses or even do strutures outside with shading material. You get a better crop yield.
For the front yard, you should put solar lanterns on every other post. I think it would look nice and would light up your front. also for the solar! Hurry! It's taking them forever to get it connected to SDGE or the Community Power. We got Solar in San Diego city in February and it's still not online. I think everyone is trying to get it done before summer.
AMAZING!! Its crazy how much you have accomplished in just 18 months. I get excited to see your homesteading updates. Its not something i can currently do, but it would be nice to be able to do one day. Its a lot of work just to maintain the beds i currently have with my limited knowledge. Haha. Im putting in an irrigation system right now and it broke me today. I think i finally figured it out but the sun was going down and i decided to take the night off. Im hoping i can finish it tomorrow if it doesnt rain. I dont want to lose this momentum. The chicckys are getting so big! I am in love with lavender. Are they producing eggs yet? Or what age do they start? I know nothing about chickens. That mural IS EPIC. Love that you added that splash of color in the back drop. Keep up with all the hard and amazing work! You got this!
Everything looks so amazing! Once again this is my dream but here in the north. :) One thing Id like to suggest is to get solitary bees instead of a hive. Solitary bees are native whereas honey bees are not. And a cute little painted up solitary bee house would fit right in.
You could keep that old, large grapefruit tree with the established roots! Look into grafting the main stems of young fruit trees onto thinner branches of the existing grapefruit tree, and doing careful and gradual pruning of the old growth. The multiple new young fruit tree grafts will grow much faster, using the established root system of the old tree!
The is looking beautiful ! I think you should extend your pond back towards the fence /pile of earth . In a year or less I think you might want to also .🌱🐟🐠🌱🌱
I love all the wonderful and new changes that are being made in the Epic Garden. The mural is beautiful it really tells a story. Thanks so much for sharing. 😊
if the shadow/lighting isn't altering the color, the shower is a beautiful silver green. Our office walls are similar. You did a beautiful job with it.
Absolutely love the mural!! And I thought those leaf cutouts around the shower were iron. They are gorgeous. Definitely plant corn in that open, unspoken-for area.
miniature water papyrus is really easy to propagate you pull the heads off and put them in water and they will root. you could do a 3 sisters patch corn beans and pumpkin maybe a cousin melon lol.
Thank you so much for all this inspiration! You have the most beautiful garden and I love that you blueprint it for those of us living in the city but want to enjoy the closer connection to the land. We are currently clearing the grass in the grass to put in some raised cedarwood garden beds and irrigation. Solar panels are next!
It would be so cool to see a 3 sisters patch! If you are able to do another soil test to compare how the “machete brothers” area has changed, that would be super interesting and informing too 😃
Wow love the outdoor pond area! With that low front fence all your bins would be stolen as well as all the trees and plants here. It's autumn here now.
It's looking good! Your open section, maybe a flower garden with cool garden art structures. Bees love flowers! A bee hive so near neighbors might be a huge accident waiting to happen! The pond is really pretty! Nice job on everything.🌎💚🐾
i suggest graphing another grapefruit variety on the large grapefruit tree to get nice grapefruit FAST! You can experiment with lots of kinds! Just plug them in.
The mural kinda makes your private garden looks less intimate and more like a park or other public space. Although the arts are cute with mini stories! Just my two cucumbers
Love the irrigation idea. I am going to pinch it lol. Never thought of using those bubbler types with seed germination. That will make it easier under the hot Aussie sun. Also cant do bees, we have people who are allergic to them. But we are going to put in native bee houses to encourage those. Nearly all Aussie bees are solitary.
I’ve noticed the shower is slowly developing each video I’m watching! Meyer lemon nice - you may have seen my comment couple days ago on your initial citrus video - just planted my own! Sweet lemons great choice!
We really wanted to do the battery thing with solar, instead of working with our local power company. New Mexico is the home to alternative power, but the local monopoly takes its time approving anything. We have tried it on a small scale with our small travel trailer, and think it is a better fit for us. Now, like your fence lumber, the prices just have to level out.
I recommend a wildflower meadow for the back garden by the pond - for pollinators and wildlife. Not only good for your veggies, but good for biodiversity. I think they call it the 80/20 rule? or 90/10 rule Always got to give a little bit back :)
Sweet potato would be a good cover crop and it would aerate your soil. Also getting some temporary electric fencing running your birds over it will help process the soil as well and enrich it. It could be use as a good composting area until you decide how that space will work for you. If you're not familiar Justin Rhodes uses chicken in this manner he is very permaculture oriented and has mastered using chickens. Check it out. Loving what you're doing.
@@epichomesteading it's definitely a solid option not only to improve your soil but for it to work for you and be productive food wise, plus smother weeds.
I absolutely adore homestead tours! The mural is very inspiring and personalized, very stylish art! Love the watercress, and i do hope you get bees! Im planning on getting stingless trigona bees myself. Soon i hope
I was considering hosting bees in my back yard to promote pollination but a local bee expert explained there are already a few hives in my neighborhood, and since each hive can have up to 50,000 bees that it really wasn’t necessary. Plus some hives can become uncomfortably aggressive.
The mural looks amazing. Really are living the dream! You should have all the Epic guests who visit the garden sign the wall as a mini memorial it would be a great way to track who comes through!

I really wish my partner would let me fence off the front yard so I could have more growing space. I think that’s so much better than having lawn.
Just do it. They will thank you later.
Please do a video on your drip system setup. Your place looks fantastic! God bless.

Hello Lenora
I'm excited for the possibility of bees. I'm much too scared to try it myself, after hearing of guard bees chasing down neighbors, but I love the idea!
I m scared of bees too, but I took the decision to have a hive and in my garden ........next year
Then, instead, get or make bee boxes for native bees. They sting far less and pollinate a lot more.
@@facelessdrone Bee boxes have been my Plan B! They seem to like it

Please do a video on irrigation! I am kinda new to gardening and am looking into irrigation right now, so that video would be amazing
The entire mural is absolutely gorgeous, but what really got me was that koi. I love the use of purple in it.

Idea for the empty wasteland--do a tilled garden space vs. no-dig garden space experiment.
I love the patio and pond! Once some of the vegetation takes off around the edge, that will be an oasis for sure.
Plant a big corn patch behind the pond. You need the patch to be large if you want anything to harvest!

Homestead has come along way since the front yard garden
Homestead looks great Kevin 👏👏👏 and the pond looks fantastic 🐟🐠🐡
Aha!! I spotted this mural a few videos ago. I love it, and how it tells the ongoing tale of the Epic Homestead.
I think a stand alone windmill, would look amazing in the orchard. Love the water storage area. Blessings from Australia.
Absolutely love the mural!! And I thought those leaf cutouts around the shower were iron. They are gorgeous.
Definitely plant corn in that open, unspoken-for area.
Leave a decent amount of that exposed earth by the pond, it contrasts nicely with the greenery you're building up.
Amazing job! I think the dirt area behind the pond would make a great area for a cactus garden. Or aloes. Etc. Could be really cool. :)
The chickens LOVE watermelon! Cut one in half and put the half in the coop. They will eat every bit and it’s great for hot days.
Love that this dropped on Earth Day 🥰
Kevin, you are such an inspiration!!
Kevin, it’s such a treat to see what you are achieving with your hard work and creativity. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.
