For anyone that doesn't understand texture, as my music teachers taught me: The texture of sound is that trait of sound that makes you distinguish one note played in a piano from the exact same note played in a cello or any other instrument
@@manishsigdel824 timbre and texture are often used interchangeably by musicians - texture is a much more intuitive way to describe timbre for non-musicians - "texture" is sometimes used to refer to the arrangement by musicians, ie whether the ensemble a single melody part against chords, or 4 different melodies at the same time, etc. Really timbre is more scientifically measured by waveform anyway, though the subjective associations we might associate with a timbre are better described through emotional language.
@@Missingnin69 i mean there are words to define the various things that you talked about like orchestration etc. In my personal opinion the boys just made a mistake and said texture instead of timbre like how the confused integer and integral a billion years ago. Kevin wasn't really trying to use all-encompassing words in the conversation and was kinda specific. But I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this
@@manishsigdel824 the difference between music and maths is that mathematics has a more or less universally used (with much variation in some areas but not in others) vocabary internationally - whereas with music, music theory is not some overarching theory with one set terminology, there are regional and subcultural differences between the words composers use. I've heard plenty of musicians casually refer to timbre as texture - again, probably because many feel it captures the subjective experience of sound better. I'm in Perth and familiar with WAAPA's composition department that Kevin went to - they focus very heavily on graphic scores and spectral music there which involve a lot of stuff to do with texture. I also think the distinction between texture and timbre itself isn't necessarily binary. A homophonic texture of a bunch of strings playing in synch as an orchestral section really does have a different timbre to it than a solo violin - such are the wonders of sound. Polyphonic texture has individual instruments playing melodies, but these instruments will no doubt be heard with thinner timbres than if playing block chords. Likewise, this continuity would apply to electronic and electro-acoustic music. On the topic of orchestration, orchestration can refer to arrangement in general, as well as specific arrangement techniques for orchestral or classical ensembles - e.g. familiarities of what arranging styles work for different ranges or properties of instruments. So there's a bit of overlap there too.

Check out Made in Abyss, easily a 10/10 for me in all term, season 2 also coming soon enough. First 7 min of the first episode already hooked me thanks to Kevin amazing soundtracks
@@jawrex28 I actually saw some of Made in Abyss but didn't finish it. I think before the kids went on their adventure, they were talking that night and I remember a background character very aggressively telling them to shut up, lol. My memory on everything else though is vague so I'll maybe rewatch it again.
Made in abyss started pretty slow for me but once they actually go on their adventure it gets so good and towards the end very emotional. I gave it a second chance (tried to watch it a while ago) and was so happy i did
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley isn't that the first episode? Seriously though, Made in Abyss is amazing. It starts slow, but there are more than a few points where I shed tears, and the music truly took it to the next level. The creators even said they left Kevin alone while the second season was in production, purely because they trusted his work so much.
Penkin is such a humble and kind soul. He turned out to be a lot more down to earth and cooler than I expected based off how the boys would describe him (although I haven't witnessed him drunk lol). I've had Kevin's music stuck inside my head even since Tower of God's trailer. Those vocals still send shivers down my spine, and I'd love to hear a deepdive into the story of how you arrived at that sound. It was, without even an ounce of irony, hauntingly beautiful.
This looked like a masterclass from the looks of it, Connor didn’t understand a word 😂 Garnt is playing it cool, he's being honest about how he doesn’t understand everything lol but he's still got good questions and Joey knows what's up
The fact that Garnt met Kevin because of that anime review especially from that comment. shows how being passionate with what you do can get the world to reach out to you. Imagine if Joey actually do anime reviews, the amount of connection he could get from happenstances like that, knowing how much he has already

That was an amazing episode as always. I was hoping the boys would ask Kevin how he found Takeshi Saito to sing in Hanezeve Caradhina. I believe his voice was so amazing and so fitting in that song, but i hardly found him anywhere beside on his own youtube channel.
That Made in Abyss opening scene with Under the River is one of my favourite anime moments ever. The visuals are beautiful to begin with, but the music is just incredible, and set the tone so well. It's just beautiful.

I finished the first season of Made in Abyss yesterday and I can wholeheartedly say that Kevin did an absolutely astounding job with it. It was one of the only anime I have watched which nearly made me cry, and half of that emotion was brought out by the soundtrack. Glad to finally see you on the podcast with the boys and I'm looking forward to experiencing more of your work in the future.
I finished it last week and won't shut up about it. Binged S1 and the Movie. I damn near cried so many times and lost it at my treasure. The song pathway and Hanezeve Caradhina are some of the best in S1. Let's be real. The ost was just GOAT.

Like Garnt casually informing he was in band. A band that nearly won a decently sized contest. Which also begs to question how the hell he sided with Connor about the boops and the beeps, lol!
I hope he'll be able to achieve the balance and normalcy he deserves and I'm happy he has such wonderful friends help him get through each day ❤️
Hold up. So Kevin just dropped his mix tape when he was 15 to Nomura himself and was like „that’s normal“
bruh the ending had me tearing up, just like kevin TT has helped a lot of us through the pandemic
I've had Kevin's music stuck inside my head even since Tower of God's trailer. Those vocals still send shivers down my spine, and I'd love to hear a deepdive into the story of how you arrived at that sound. It was, without even an ounce of irony, hauntingly beautiful.
I'm impressed that this is the first time I hear someone who went to college/ uni and is able to say he uses what they learned for their job.
The man, the myth, the legend. We are finally getting an episode with the one and only Kevin.
This looked like a masterclass
from the looks of it, Connor didn’t understand a word 😂
Garnt is playing it cool, he's being honest about how he doesn’t understand everything lol but he's still got good questions
and Joey knows what's up
WE NEED THIS GUY BACK ON AGAIN, AND WE NEED HIM TO MEET CHRIS AS WELL THAT WOULD BE LEGENDARY
TRUUU
2 BROAD MANS
that ending was beautiful.. The appreciation from kevin for being friends with the boys is showing.. Legend! Can't wait for s2 of abyss
I’m so glad to have Kevin on Trash Taste finally. Especially with how he composed music for some big shows including winning a award for Made in Abyss
Good episode! However, Joey's mic is like a good 50% louder than the rest, might want to check in on that.
yes!!!! pls
rip earphone users
The man we've all been waiting for, the man, the myth, the legend. Kevin Penkin
The fact that Garnt met Kevin because of that anime review especially from that comment. shows how being passionate with what you do can get the world to reach out to you. Imagine if Joey actually do anime reviews, the amount of connection he could get from happenstances like that, knowing how much he has already
This was one of the most wholesome episodes of TT.
Kevin is such a passionate and humble guy, but clearly comfortable with the bois, and he's done a lot of incredible work, so seeing them bant is really interesting.
As a person from Perth it is absolutely wild hearing Kevin refer to places I’m familiar with like Northbridge and Mount Lawley. Shoutout to the fellow Perthians, all 2 of you! 😎✌️
Yeah I just got whiplash, hearing about Mt Lawley and Northbrige. (I know it’s a late response, but us Perth people have to stick together in this wide world of the internet)
@@clairewoods1858 Hell yeah, Perthians rise up ✊😎
Kevin: I kinda agree with the beeps and the boops take
Joey and Garnt: You were the chosen one, you were supposed to stop the monke not join him
Connor : 🐵🪘🎶🎶🎶
Perth gang!!! And WAAPA gang!! It's so inspiring to hear Kevin talk, I still hear him talked about around university, what a legend
Travel multiple overnight trips to make connections
Submit countless works just to gain some attention for free
Study a foreign language while attending full college
Working while attending college
And getting a master in the same field
And tells "mate, i don't know how I ended up here"
Modesty man!
By far my favourite Trash Taste so far. Such a huge fan of his, but it's just amazing to hear from a professional from the industry speak so honestly about their work. I know you guys must want more guests like this, but I'm still gonna say that I want more!
Finnaly! An episode with "this fucking guy" we've heard so much
he's a musician, does it for a living
Kevin: i agree with it being all beeps and boops
Ooooh boy, now that it's trash taste abroad there's sooo many more options for guests. Looking forward to seeing all of them !
Absolutely loved this one. Found Kevins' music first time through Made in Abyss and been a fan ever since.
YES! Same here!
I've loved Kevin's work on everything and especially made in abyss so much so that I'm holding off on reading the manga just to have the full experience with the amazing composition so glad they finally got him on the show! and I do love how its immediately understood how they would always just refer to him as "some dude" he seems really chill
That was an amazing episode as always. I was hoping the boys would ask Kevin how he found Takeshi Saito to sing in Hanezeve Caradhina. I believe his voice was so amazing and so fitting in that song, but i hardly found him anywhere beside on his own youtube channel.
The insistence of explaining things poorly rather than just googling an image of the item is why I watch these bois
That Made in Abyss opening scene with Under the River is one of my favourite anime moments ever. The visuals are beautiful to begin with, but the music is just incredible, and set the tone so well. It's just beautiful.
Can we all appreciate how wholesome Kevin was at the end?
Made In Abyss has probably my favorite OST in anime and it's so cool to hear Kevin talk about it and to see that he's also just a super chill guy.
Absolute legend, so glad to see him on. He's not been in the business long and he's already one of my top composers.
So wholesome almost shed a tear at the end, but just wanted to say THANK YOU GUYS and the TEAM, of course.
Kevin is definitely a great composer and will forever thank him for what he did with Made in Abyss bringing it to life
This man made my favorite ost ever , hanazeve caradhina
When I heard it for the first time in the dawn scene I teared up
Agree! When they said goodbye to her and the female singer started singing angels music
Kevin looks such a down to earth guy, i knew he is a legend in music composing especially since a big fan of Tower of god, but didn't expect him to this funny and friendly
I've been an avid listener of trash taste ever since the first episode. Tomorrow I leave for bootcamp and I'm listening in for the last time for the foreseeable future. I'll have a whole treasure trove of episodes to listen too whence I'm out. Thanks for giving me so much entertainment boys I'll miss having the podcast to listen to every week.
Kevin is that one friend who does amazing things but doesn't have an idea how he did it
Man, Kevin is my hero.
I always try and aspire to be able to make music at least 10% as good as him
It will take time, but I'll work hard
And I'm gonna start today
Man the ending was too wholesome.
Yay, finally Kevin can confront Connor about that beeps and boops.
And he agrees with connor...
@@troy10troytroy great plot twist
That was definitely the most wholesome ending to a Trash Taste episode
Made In Abyss and Shield-Hero have some of my favourite tracks (Rest in peace Billy Kametz), so it's great seeing him on the podcast finally.
“The rising of the shield hero” the song on Spotify (not the opening song for shield hero) is an absolute banger. Love the violins and I especially love the drop.
I´ve been a fan of this man´s work for like 5 years since Made in Abyss aired and it's so surreal watching him talk so casual about tracks that left a mark on me. What a lad.
So cool seeing how Kevin switches between chilling and informing people. He’s very cool to listen to
Tower of God has got to be the best thing I've read recently and hearing Kevin's OST for it's first season absolutely floored me. I'm so glad he was the composer for it, his work on MIA was phenomenal and it really captured the 'not everything is as it seems' ambience of the story so well. based TT episode
Fantastic episode, so glad Kevin finally got to come on. Love his work on Made in Abyss, Shield hero and ToG.
Wasn't expecting such an emotional ending
as someone who has wanted to get into music for a while, i loved this episode! kevin is incredibly knowledgeable - i could listen to him talk about his passions for hours more!
FINALLY, YES!!! Massive fan of Kevin, I was able to see him at a con in Chicago back in 2019...absolute GENIOUS! All of his scores are top notch my personal favorite being his work on Tower Of God I was lucky enought to get the Vinyl for that
Wow! This is a treat🙌🏼 I am an amateur musician and composer, so it was super interesting listening to Kevin talk about his work. The guy also seems like a great mate - would love to bump shoulders with him one day.
Also, Made in Abyss is one of the only anime soundstracks to move me in a viceral way, so good! Can't wait to see what the Kevin brings us next😄🎼
It's the Mailman again, thank you for continuing to upload as you tour the world! It's been a very shitty week with the heat wave.
Fellow Perthian here! Northbridge (and adjacent city side clubs) haven't felt the same since the loss of Fast Eddys 4am drunk feasts.
As a huge fan of Anime OST beeps and boops, this is definitely a top 5 guest episode for me.
I could listen to Kevin talk shit for hours, I want him and a lot of alcohol on an After Dark episode!
I'm glad that this reunion finally happened, Kevin it's such a cool dude and magnificent composer. 💞
That ending was so wholesome, I feel precisely the same as Kevin does and it actually hurts more then I would like to admit.
Aww that group hug. 🥺 Can't wait for the next episode with Kevin! ❤️
This was such a great episode. Kevin is an abolsute lad and its so nice hearing someone speak of their craft so passionately. The vibe was absolutely phenomenal. Kevin can be so eloquent when explaining different aspects of his music and the process. I hope Kevin can come on some time again in the future! Great work!
omgg dudeee I love LOVE to an obsession the music of made in abyss 😱😱 fantastic work man! please never stop!!
and an applause to the boys for getting him on the show 👏
One of my favourite episodes. Seeing someone talk about their passion like this is so wholesome
