Hummm. Many years ago when I worked for Collins Marine Corp. We had a model of a non-resonant (on Marine bands) dipole antenna that we installed on yachts and other smaller boats for their 100 W HF stations. It seemed to work Okay and always exhibited a very low SWR on all bands from 2 MHz to 30 MHz. One day I replaced a storm damaged unit and decided to dissect the old antenna. Upon cracking open the epoxy sealed cobra head at the center of the dipole I found to my surprise, a 150W 50 Ohm non-inductive resistor between the two legs of the dipole!! No wonder It had such a flat Curve! I wonder??? KL7UT
Yeah, I was going to comment that this and other antennas like it might be just a high wattage resistor as the load. If the SWR flat curve is too good to be true it likely is.
15,000 Subscribers! That's awesome Jason...congratulations! You deserve it. HOA friendly antennas are in big demand so, this antenna might be the answer for many. Thanks for the review Jason...73!
I wonder how it performs? The nearly flat SWR across such a wide set of bands is almost too good to be true. My dummy load has similar SWR across the bands :-). Looking forward to learning more. 73, and thanks for the video.
I'm actually surprised to see this antenna on this channel. Do you expect an honest youtube review for a wideband (20M to 80M) compromise HF antenna, especially when the manufacturer provided it in exchange for publicity? I have not seen any youtube comparisons showing how many dB are lost when using one of these types of antennas, compared to an efhw, quarter wave vertical, or center fed dipole. But EVERY video shows how the SWR is unbelieveably low over a very wide bandwidth...not super helpful.
This would be a great antenna for full-time RVing if you have access to pound the ground rods into the grounds and ability to pull them back out when it's time to move to the next site. Long time patron, N2XU.
Thanks for the information. This looks like a great option for a variety of applications. I especially like that everything is included in the package.
Nice presentation, always enjoy your videos. I'd like to see a follow up with on air performance as the SWR sweep seems quite promising. Looks like a nice little complete kit, but the price really threw me off.
K8RCZ- looks like a great antenna for portable operations. Really appreciate your channel (though my wife doesn't) gets me looking at some new equipment and portable ideas.
Congrats on the 15K Jason! Very nice quick deploy setup. Maybe a little to low for a birdhouse but could attach an excellent squirrel feeder. Thanks for all you do for the ham community. 73 de N4WLC
KB5RZM What a great idea. My HOA is so strict this would be perfect for home use, vacations, and POTA & Camping. Unfortunately, a neighbor complained about your EFHW antenna. This looks like a more creative Idea and would be a perfect match to complement my IC-705. Thanks for the great review.
My interest is piqued any time someone makes a sneaky antenna like this. There are too many HOAs out there who don't see the value in things like ham radio, fun, or individuality. KD9SXA
Congratulations on the 15k landmark Jason. Looks like a great little antenna, especially for HOA conditions. I’ll keep following on this antenna. And hello to the folks at TN07, great people to deal with. AB4DK.
@@W3OY-RAY I don't think so, a 9:1 would still need a tuner for most bands and that 17' whip is resonant on 20 meters fully extended . I have two of the MFJ ones and I just add radials for 20 meters. I have a 3d printed coil for lower bands but you still have to tap it and make adjustments.
@@W3OY-RAY It has a high wattage 50-ohm non-inductive resistor in the so-called network. This design is from the postwar era. (1940's) It's called a terminated dipole. most of your signal will be heat.
W3OY- I used a similar solution at my apartment for my first 6 months as a ham. Have since started using my rain gutters most of the time. Thanks for the videos, 73.
Having just upgraded to my General License and living in an HOA, this looks like the perfect setup for me and my new IC705! Thanks for all the great videos! KJ7TKL
Helluva an antenna! I keep mine in my truck (along with my MPC-750). Easy to set up and take down when I operate from a local, state, or national park.
As a new ham operator on a farm...this really appeals to me for ease of setup and use. I am currently studying for my general license so I can dive head first into hf when I finally understand everything behind hf and antenna theory. My biggest mistake so far since I aquired my ham license, promising my wife 2 years before I buy any more ham equipment. Instant regret once I really opened Pandora's box. 1.8 swr without a tuner?! I'm sold on that for sure....I think the icom 7300 or the yaesu ft-891 or the 991 would be a great match for this antenna if my research this far has actually helped me learn anything. Great video guys. Thank you for sharing...will be in touch in 1 year and 3 months for this setup for sure. Lol
If you are on a farm with lots of space and open areas , you can actually put up all types of long wire antennas, you may also construct cheap verticals with the required radials. It all depends on the amount of space that you have
I think one word best describes this antenna... WOW! This setup would be a great addition to my Oasis (75-60-40 Meter) as well as my 80-6 Meter EFHW Antennas I use at my QTH with the FT-897D. I really appreciate your videos that helps the amateur radio community. Keep up the good work and 73 de Joe KB9LXH Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky.
I may be wrong but something's not right here. Smith chart impedance looks closer to a badly matched 50 ohm resistor across the wide HF spectrum. What is the radiation efficiency? Quick and easy check, on 80 or 40 meters, does the receiver noise level go up significantly when connecting the antenna to the radio?
Great antenna. I have been trying all kinds of in attic options up to now and every spring when the trees leaf out it is good bye signal. Something outside would be great!
Very interesting. 3 questions: 1. how long is the counterpoise wire that stretches between the two ground rods? 2. How long is the wire that stretches out from the coupling device? 3. How much power can this antenna take e.g. 100 w, 200 w, 500w :) ?
I would love to know the ratio of that matching circuit. 49:1? Or maybe 64:1? Trying to decide if it is an end fed wire with a counterpoise or a dipole in an inverted L. Grounding the 27’ wire has me confused some. W4MKH
NZ5TX I would really like to try that option in my Field kit, I usually have a end fed multi band that is set up for either inverted V or sloper. This option would get us on the air at the park a lot quicker and offer another option for DX or NVIS. Thank you.
