The mysterious underground titan, Mach-Hommy has released his highly anticipated album “Mach’s Hard Lemonade” exclusively on Tidal, a move that further establishes his relationship with hip-hop mogul, Jay-Z. And seeing how Mach has been more willing to be in the public eye, we may be witnessing the underground artist move towards a more mainstream platform with his music and image.
Thematically, this album doesn’t seem to hold too much of a tight knit concept but it does without a doubt hold a ton of weight in its content and references. A reoccurring topic is Mach’s abhorrence to some of the rappers in the current game. He pens a lot of aggression into his lyrics and doesn’t shy away from the fact that he looks down rappers. The most blatant song where he demonstrates this is “Pour House” where Mach and YOD don’t waste a single verse, line or breath to berate and disrespect certain rappers (possibly Griselda). Mach also speaks on his influence and success in hip hop and the underground like in “Photocopy Sloppy”. As an overall theme, I see Mach-Hommy embrace his accomplishments while simultaneously looking down on most of his competition in the rap game.
Lyrically, Mach has been established as one of the most potent lyricists in hip-hop right now. His rhyme schemes and references seem to ooze out of him effortlessly. The multi-syllabic hurdles that he goes through added with the outrageous, off-the-wall callbacks he makes coupled with his gravely voice and steady flow really creates one of the most distinct and creative MCs in hip-hop. Seeing how he carries this title with pride, it’s not surprising at all that the lyrics are definitely a focal point in this album. An aspect that was kind of new in this album was his singing that was pretty prevalent in several songs. It wasn’t as enticing as his rhyming but still very nice to hear. Regarding his flow, I do want to say that his first verse in Marshmallow Test has one of my favorite rhyme schemes and flows on the whole album. Mach-Hommy is also well known to weave in deep-cut references that you will have to study up on to understand the actual point that he is trying to make and that’s also assuming that you’ve listened close enough to decipher what his lyrics actually are since he has essentially banned anyone from posting his lyrics online. I would have to spend days on end to dissect every single line on this album but I’ll refer to some of the lyrics that stood out to me:
“You bold enough to start beef, you swole enough to get ripped”
I like how he used the beef(y), swole, and ripped words that all mean to be strong but flips the last word ripped to mean you’re putting yourself in a position to die (RIP’ed)
“That boy hell and thats what everybody been sayin since the 7th grade I think that boy 12, don’t shoot, I turned 11 years old twice”
I mostly found that bar funny and interesting, how Mach was reminiscing on his youthful mischief only to be reminded of police brutality and his disdain for cops.
“Clammy hands and chicken legs, bird chest nigga with nice hands”
Really liked the way Mach used animals to describe human features. (Clam)my
“Passport missing, pace, nigga never left, all you know is that’s his county boy nigga they the best, present tense, that futuristic nigga loose man I bet he go digital with the spook”
Here I interpret these lines as Mach looking back at his past self and recounting how he was stuck in one place and wasn’t going anywhere (passport missing) fast forward to now where he’s seen as somewhat of the future of hip hop who’s globally known on the internet. Also I like how the first line can be heard as “pass poor, missing pace” sort of showing his humble and unskilled beginnings.
Anyways I could go on and on showcasing my favorite lyrics on this album but all this to say, Mach-Hommy is one of my favorite lyricists in hip-hop today.
Sonically, this album doesn’t turn away from the sound that most Mach-Hommy albums embody. Most of the instrumentals are wrapped in this gritty, dirty, underground kind of aesthetic that couples extremely well with Mach’s voice and rapping style. The soul and jazz samples are beautiful and mixed in a way that sounds very distinct to Mach’s catalog. I cannot stress enough how disappointed I was (and still am) that Mach didn’t throw a verse down on “Photocopy Sloppy”. It’s easily my favorite instrumental here and top 10 this year. It’s insanely delicate and swaying that just by itself cFinding out that Earl helped compose it made it even more special.
All in all, this was a great album. A bit short but still very enjoyable to listen to. I’ll be sitting with this album a bit more to dig through the theme and references so feel free to let me know if I’m missing anything as well. Thanks for watching and reading!
Favorite tracks: Pour House, NJ Ultra, Soon Jah Due, Marshmallow Test

the Photocopy Sloppy beat is so insane, honestly not even mad Mach just let it shine by itself and only did spoken word on it. Earl being one of the absolute top tier rappers is fairly established by now but I feel like we rly need to talk more about just how good his beats are, snapped on all of Fete des Morts too (which is French btw lol)

you should definitely check out Haitian Body Odor (it’s on SoundCloud) it’s generally regarded as his magnum opus and rightfully so, I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen a video review of that album so you would be the first

11:25 English + Chinese, my dude. Also, YoungQueenz appeared on Preservation's latest album, "Eastern Medicine, Western Illness", which Mach-Hommy is featured (on "I-78 / Capillaries" and "Correspondence", which also features Your Old Droog). It's a pretty crazy and clever album with loads of Chinese samples and great rappers spitting over them, so you should give it a check as well.

Squeaky Hinge actually references the murder of Latasha Harlins. She was a 15 year old african american girl who got shot dead in a convinience store owned by a korean lady named Soon Ja Du. This also was one of the reasons for the 1992 LA riots since the sentence she got was only 5 years probation, 400 hours of community service, a 500$ restitution and got to pay for funeral expenses.
This how he references it ”step in the store, see the elephant man on the wall, ganesh on the door, see the killer who ran on the law.” Crazy shit

the way he raps is so illusive that a wealth of subject matter can be missed. for instance the album cover illustrates a hidden message in fine detail about going for success in life and the trails that await. the whole life is lemons perspective is displayed on all the songs esp. the titles
like marshmallow test where the idea of delayed gratification produces better outcomes. its really dope his message and how he delivers by letting you know without telling you hence the phrase phantom its like its there but its not

From what I heard, youtubers talk over tracks to avoid having their videos taken down for copyright infringements.
