  • I've only been a car enthusiast for 11 years now, but in those 11 years I've heard many people complain about new technology in modern cars. Sure, driver assists take away from the raw driving experience, but they also add a new dimension to driving. It's not easy accepting something that's different than what you're used to, but I hope that we can all appreciate the advancements in car technology that we have today.

      Right on Bob! I've owned four vehicles and so far they've only been stick! I can see owning an electric car in my future, they're a ton of fun at low speeds and make city driving enjoyable. But I hope to always have a 6-speed in the stables as well!

      Yeah I love a manual and the having the skill to drive it properly. But you watch some the DCT (PDK) style transmissions and you begin to understand how they are sooooo good. But is als ohope to keep a manual around just for the fun of it. I get twitchy if I drive an auto for too long. :P

    Absolutely right, everything in the car world is based on the consumers themselves. Not everyone is a car enthusiast and most will never be. Most people in America that are not car enthusiasts don't want anything to do with a manual transmission, and they miss out on learning this skill that less than 20% of Americans know how to do. It's even more sad when I make friends with international students and they are the ones who recognize immediately when a car is standard and they get excited because it reminds them of home. Americans who have never seen it before just stare in awe at the weird shift pattern and go "Huh? Why do you have to move that thing so much? Why are there three pedals?"

      Jared Reyes That comment was totally awesome man. We need to bring back the big giant American cars with V8 power and rear wheel drive and most of them need a manual (especially the 2-door coupes) same for pickup trucks to.

      Jared Reyes Yep lazy consumers that won't take the time to learn how to drive a simple manual. It's heartbreaking

      Master Chief Why is it lazy to not want learn something that is completely unnecessary? For the average person, there is little to nothing to gain from learning manual other than getting to act snobby and superior on the internet.

    What's the most worrying, however, is autonomous cars.
    Since its creation, cars have always been about groundbreaking engineering, and driving experience. The driver, and how the driver feels, has always been the roots and the reason of a car’s existence. However in the recent years it has become less and less so. It won’t be long until the driver is completely taken out of the equation. We who love cars and love driving them will become the minority, the outcast, perhaps even the weird ones.

      well said. It saddens me when i'm sitting at a red light and I look over and at everyone else and they are all looking at their phones instead of anticipating the moment the light turns green (me driving a 4 cylinder Camry that doesn't even make 200 horsepower I believe is proof you don't have to have a 400 horsepower muscle car to have fun driving). it really makes me fear for the future generations, not just because they may miss out on the experience of driving but what else they will miss out on due to the growing autonomy of everyday things.

    • @Ki-sn5bp

      I can see they're gonna be flying spaceships, and wondering why we still drive cars.
      Spaceships will become the new norm, and it will be hard for us generations to adapt.
      Whoa I just went too much into the future there.

      i like cars and driving (drifting) and whatnot, but i think cars were created to be a better option than walking/bicycle/horse/pogostick/etc, not "driving experience". . . unless the experience of getting your sweaty, stanky ass off that damn bike/horse/pogostick is the real "driving experience" lol

      Sam Kent I don't know why you think motorcycles will never be self driving.
      Honda already has a self balancing bike that can literally move with no rider; Admittedly very slow. It's only a matter of time until it can ride perfectly well without a pilot.
      Also, very soon they're releasing bikes with automatic adaptive braking - they will brake themselves if they detect an inevitable crash with another vehicle.
      So the day is coming..

    You know whats great? When you get a clear cut example of an enthusiast car only enthusiasts would buy.
    Take the Evo X for example, has MR and GSR trims. The MR's transmission makes it the faster car overall, but due to the amount of people wanting a manual vehicle the GSR outsold the MR by a landslide. ;)

      The exact same thing happened with the Gordan Murray supercar. 300 were built, with both a manual and sequential, and only *TWO* sequentials were sold. Literally over 99% of people wanted manual transmission. I think the car was Europe only though. Lots of people, even today, know how to drive manual, but in USA it's very different for some reason.

  • @Mr0supra0
    @Mr0supra0 7 лет назад +27

    Your points are logical (except that one where you said modern cars are easier to modify, they are not).
    Since I do like good and logical argumentation, I have to go against myself and be a bit of a jerk right now. I personally understand that objectively, cars get better, the new 911 is faster arround a track than the old 911. But, when it comes to cars, logic gets thrown out of the window for me. I don't see cars in numbers, I don't want to have fast lap times, neither do I want a car with so many safety features that it basically takes over the driving for me. The sensation of driving is slowly fading away, and everybody who drove old generation legends like the M models e36, e39 or e46 and compared them to the new BMWs knows what I'm talking about. Same goes for the older AMGs, they just felt so fucking brutal compared to the new ones. Cars just start to loose that "thing" in my eyes, I can't describe that, but I start to drool when I see a 90s 911 in perfect condition roll by, while the new 911 is nothing special to me. Same goes for BMW, Merc, Audi, Aston, Jaguar, Bentley, Maserati, Ferrari and so on and so forth.
    To put it simple, a lot of us enthusiasts don't givea flying fuck about numbers, we do care about the passion, the feel cars give us...

      I agree. I drive two cars. One is a 1993 volvo 940 with 223,000 miles and its not even that fast but, man do I enjoy driving it. It feels so comfy and its nice to sometimes drive slow and enjoy the ride. I just restored the car so Im adding new sway bars and suspension. Then my second car is a VW Jetta 2.5 which I like to add parts to as well. But in all I dont care about stupid times or how fast it is. I just like getting my hands dirty and seeing what I come up with :).

It doesn't mean the passat isn't fun to drive, it hell is, but that "thing" isn't there...

    I honestly *REALLY* love the movement of modern cars tbh. I prefer DCT traditional manual because of how fluid it is to use. I like super buttery power steering and traction control because of how easy it makes the process of driving. I like all the computerized component getting integrated into the operation of the car because of how streamlined and enjoyable it makes things. Overall I feel we shouldn't reject quality of life improvements to cars so long as it serves to make the function of motor vehicle operation better.

    I still believe a lot of enthusiast vehicles would sell better with a manual if it was an option. This is especially true on cars that offer a manual transmission on the base spec, with desirable options not available with one.
    I personally ended up ordering a competitor to the Giulia after they removed it from the options list. I'm not driving at 9/10ths 90% of the time I'm in the car and manuals keep me from boring myself to death in the daily commute. I'm hopeful with this next generation of hybrid-lite cars like the next generation Mustang will keep a manual as an option along with the increased performance.

    I think the only thing i have to complain about, as i am new into the car would, is electric cars, more specifically Tesla. The idea of being made to follow a monopoly company that doesn't give you choice of what you want to drive, but tells you what you want to drive is terrifying. Self-driving cars are also terrifying. Science has proven again and again that human instinct creates the ability to have an outcome "between 0 and 1" opposed to just 0 or 1. Think about that when your self driving car has to choose where to crash, or even further, has to choose between your life and the life of another...

DCT is crap idc is it is more effective it is no comparison to using your whole body to control the car. Things may change but I hope that manual stays. As far as supercars being mostly dct now is because hardly anyone who buys them is a car enthusiast they are mostly just rich people who buy it for the name and luxury and don't even put the driving aspect into their decision.

      They had their moment, and that moment is now over. They increase drag when up, they freeze in place during cold winters, if a motor breaks you've got no illumination from that side even when the bulb is still fine, and they add weight and complication (on the front end, which in the vast majority of cases is not a good thing).
      They're also an aesthetic gamble. They aren't necessarily hideous (usually), but both the Nissan S13 and Toyota AE86 were better looking in their fixed-headlight variants (so of course the US market only got the popups, even though the archaic headlight regulations that led to their use were already gone in at least one of those cases), and fixed-headlight conversions on popup cars don't always look much better.

      Computer programmers shiver at the thought that a bad line of code could end someones life. There's millions upon millions of lines of code in the newer cars, think about all the combinations of draw calls that could cause some anomaly glitch. Computers in cars should take the more analog approach, being less intrusive and more assistant. Not to mention all the touch screen controls that require you to look away from the road to use them...

      Cars changing and moving is a good thing and a bad thing. I personally believe that cars will never be fully autonomous as long as humans exist. Even if they did, someone would eventually say "man, I miss being able to control my car." and would probably bring back manually controlled cars. I like the fact that some cars are getting faster, some are more aerodynamic and some are more fuel efficient. I also like that some are more comfortable and safe. What I don't like is the lack of manual transmission on most cars and some of the other dumb factors behind car design nowadays. But the stupid trends come and go. The stupid trends usually die harder.

    I'm afraid that the consumers of more expensive cars that non-car enthusiasts are buying said cars with dual clutches and autos when that doesn't reflect the lower income car person. I feel as though if more car people had more cash to throw at supercars there would be a lot more manuals.

    • @CanadianCarguy247
      @CanadianCarguy247 7 лет назад +32

      +ShazamMan But, let's say the world is all autos all of the sudden. I know myself and a good amount of car people will miss the mechanical feel of a manual. You just don't get the same connection with an auto, in my opinion at least. Also, speed shouldn't really matter to a person as long as there having fun with there car, the car could be a 05 Corolla XRS or a 17 488 GTB, two completely diffrent cars but just because the corolla isn't as fast they can be having just as much fun if not more than the person in the Ferrari. So in the end just because the auto is faster than the manual shouldn't determine if your car is fun to you or not, it should be how the car makes you feel.

    • @chrxx4327
      @chrxx4327 7 лет назад +41

      I definitely think you're right. The people that buy supercars mostly are buying them as status symbols. If you look at the more affordable sport car range they all pretty much come with a manual option. Us plebs still want manual sports cars.

    You're wrong. Change is irrelevant. The point is the experience.
    An EK Civic from 1999 is more fun to toss around than an Evo X- I know first hand. And this should not be the case. Modern cars, for the most part, are incredibly distant. Soulless. Antiseptic. People call it "refined," but its just numbing. A manual trans is a point of control that is being taken away. Electronic Stability Control is the same. Heck, even ABS takes away control in that you are no longer the only one telling the brakes what to do.
    Those of us who can actually drive want to actually drive. And to us, that means having control. In many cases, it's fine to be able to give up some control. On a long drive home in heavy rain, when I just wanna get to bed, I'd love my car to drive for me. And failing that, I'd love to have ECS/ABS/Cruise control/etc. But what you advocate is complacency, which would lead to all control being stripped of those of us who are actually passionate about driving.

If someone said that some part of car is going to fail, sales said "Yes, but after the warranty expires, so we don't care." Nobody wants to make anything that lasts. Look at Saab. They made car that last forever and Saab is gone now.

      AlmeydaTV Cars were made to last once, but you have to go back mutch further than you'd think to find them. The change occurred after ww2. In the economic boom of the early 50s for the first time the car market became saturated. Everyone that needed a car and could afford one had one. To combat this car companies began radically changing the design of their cars every 3 years and in the late 50s at gm under harley earl they cut that down to one year. Which is why the 55 56 and 57 bel air are so different. This combined with cheaper paints designed to fail in 5 years, ensured that the sheer shame of driving an old decaying car, would keep you going to the Dealer every 5 years for the rest of your life.

    There's not really fair comparisons here; an electric vs gasoline car is a FAR broader comparison than disc vs drum brakes, or power vs. non power steering. We're seeing cars become faster, but also less unique; as with the Formula 1 example given, cars are looking more and more 'the same' these days, apart from rare examples. Performance cars are becoming harder to find, and 'driver's machines' are largely replaced by 'A to B' transportation. Your average electric car is a very sterile experience - no sound, no smells, and very little in common with a traditional car. Expecting most performance-oriented drivers to embrace the new as if it was just a mild evolutionary step (going back to power vs manual steering) is asking far more than you think it is.

    • @frankmagana1408

      MrOrtloff debatble. Most safety items are done years before govt forces them into cars. Many cars nowadays have blind spot monitoring systems. Its not forced by the governement... Yet. What the governement does is tell automakers to implement systems that were already in their mid to high end range of the model spectrum and forces it into the cheap range and raise the price of the cheap car. This is one of the reasons why cars today cost more than they did 10 years ago when adjusted for inflation.

    • @bmortloff
      @bmortloff 7 лет назад +4

      Frank Magana In setting the regs on cheaper cars they make them safer for everyone; passengers other road users and pedestrians for the life of the car. Price wise you're getting more car for your money now than you did ten years ago - at least here in Australia.
      Last thing blind spot monitors are really just for people who can't set up their mirrors correctly. and they really aren't adding much to the price of the car. The safety features which are fundamental to survivability in crashes shouldn't be optional just to get a new car on the road.

    • @frankmagana1408
      @frankmagana1408 7 лет назад +2

      MrOrtloff but then the cheaper car isnt cheap anymore. We see this with pickup trucks. Theyre all over 40k now when they used to be more high 20's. So what do a lot of people do than? I agree, but I think it would be better to have a second hand car market with vehicles that have decent safety features than a cheaper new car market packed with Chinese death traps at the low end. That's what I was trying to get at when I said safety features that last the "life of the car".
      Better pay than 15 years ago wouldn't hurt either.

    At the end of the day who is buying theses new cars? Grown middle aged adults lol, Most of these viewers will not buy a new sports car we complain about something we cannot even afford and likely will wait until it depreciates so our young broke asses can buy it ahah

    They're making what consumers want? DEAD WRONG. They make what they want and then have their marketing team try and convince us we need it.

    The thing with new cars is the lack of soul. They are not that much dissimilar from each other because of cost cutting, tighter regulations, and TURBOCHARGE.

      No we don't. Fully self- driving cars will come in future, but there will be an option if you want to drive yourself

    Long live the man pedal. It is the most dynamic and fun way to drive no matter what it is. There is nothing dynamic or fun about flappy paddles.

    But there are a lot of computer failures with new cars. It's just simple that the more parts you have, like a load of different computers, circuits, and so on, the more prone that they are to breaking.

    I love the technology they are coming out with in newer cars. They are pushing the performance levels and making them more efficient. I am concerned with the fact that some car manufacturers are trying to lock down cars to the point that the everyday person cannot work on them. Imagine the engine under the hood of your car being treated like software on computers are being treated. Where you don't own the software, you are just buying a license to use it, and if you modify or change the software you will not only void your warranty but can be fined or sent to jail. You find this is some of the software's end-user license agreements (EULA).
    If they bring the EULA mentality to cars it will kill the aftermarket, destroy motorsports for the amateur (goodbye track days), eliminate the ability for you to work on on your own vehicle (this includes simple oil changes), and smaller mechanic shops will go out of business if they are not authorized to repair these vehicles. Auto manufacturers and big car dealerships are pushing this all under the cover of environmental protection and driver safety when the true reason is to increase profits by cornering the market. I do not feel this change will come in the next 5 years, but in 10 or 15 years, it is definitely a possibility. So yes, cars are changing but in more ways than just how they are built.

    what I hate about new cars is they tend to get heavier and heavier when new models came out. other than that, I'm cool.

    Sure, but they are killing things we like, the roar and the punch of a VTEC was killed, the big ass lag followed by a big ass kick in the seat of a turbo was killed, with eletric steering now you have 000 road feel can't even feel the bump steering, with autos you lose feel, you can't feel the engine/gearbox vibrations you can feel that perfectly matched no clutch gear up. We are turning drivers to operators that just operate eletrical switches and knobs with no physical connection to our car/road. This is like driving a Miata, who cares if you are slow when you are smilling everytime you floor it or take a turn? Who cares if your 0-60 is 0,5s slower because you have a manual and not an auto? Its just sad to know that in a not so far future I will strugle to buy a brand new performance car with manual and real steering....

    I love the feel of shifting gears myself, but there is just something to a PDK or a DSG that makes me giddy every time it shifts. And honestly if I had to choose a daily and the car came in manual and PDK/DSG/DCT, I'd be going for the dual clutch 9 times out of 10. For a track/fun car it's manual all the way.
