  • I’ve talked to a couple people from Fraser Shipyards, turns out Lee A Tregurtha is getting an enormous overhaul this winter, not just her regular 5-year inspection, possibly continuing into spring. Among other things, the steel on her bottom will be replaced, as well as the bottoms of her cargo holds and parts of her unloading system, plus inspection and painting. The final price tag is unknown but given that painting alone is roughly a million dollars and other maintenance prices that have leaked out over the years (and assuming the information is correct) I’m guessing the total costs could run as high as 5-10 million dollars. The only real visible part of the process is the painting and it’s something that I’ve been watching them do over the last several weeks! (By the way her name is now Lee A Tregurt because it looks like some paint got on the name on her starboard bow 😂) Good to see the old warhorse being taken care of! With all that work I guess we’ll see if she’s ready in time for the new season!
    If this information is incorrect or if anyone with more knowledge would be interested in sharing please comment and I’ll correct or add information as needed!
    In the background are the lakers Edward L Ryerson and Manitoulin, with the tugs North Carolina and Missouri

    Love the Lee good to hear they are putting big money into upgrading her!!! So sad to see fast Eddy in the background wasting away 😔. Great videos! 👍🏻

      Very good to see! As for Ryerson, yeah I really hope she sails someday. I asked the same guys I talked to about Lee for this video about the Ryerson as well. I guess the company that owns her really wants her to sail. There’s demand for straight deckers right now and she’s the last of the old ones that could potentially still sail, so they were trying to get her out. They were working on restoring her last winter, got her electrical systems and other things back up and running and they even hired some crew to sail her, but work stalled when they started finding a lot more structural damage to the ship than anticipated. Plus they never did get her engine started, not sure if that’s because they were having issues with it or just never got to that stage. Either way she’s now sitting and waiting on a decision on what to do, because that’s MASSIVE money to put into a 65 year old ship that’s sat for 15 years.
      I might do a video on her in the future, seeing if I can get more information

      @@jonathanellsworth21 wow thank you for the info on Fast Eddy I really hope the damage isnt to severe. her not being a self unloader may make that decision even more difficult. Look forward to seeing a video of her if you can set one up.

    You captured the sound of her thruster! I miss that, but love the rhythm of her Bergens as she transits the St. Clair River. Really enjoy the videos and information you share.

      @@jonathanellsworth21Never a crew member but I was treated to a walk through when she was waiting for a shipment of coal at the Toledo CSX Coal Dock, in 2004. My favorite part of that tour remains the tool room with gigantic wrenches, etc. Since then, my heart has remained aboard and I follow her every move. When I retired, I moved to be near the St. Clair River but in recent years had to give up driving to my favorite locations to listen to her engines and photograph her passing. The videos and webcams are such a blessing now.

    So happy to hear that they're spending all that money on her, that's some of the best news you can get about an old laker! I heard Cuyahoga just got a new engine, too, after the fire, also a multi million dollar job. There's no guarantees of anything on the lakes but I think the future looks optimistic for the 80-year-olds.

      Thank you! Something a little different for sure! Was going to try and stay to watch her pull all the way into the dock but this was all in incredibly slow motion, was sitting and watching this the better part of two hours and it took her another hour or more after this ended to reach her final position, she fits in there like a glove lol. Very fascinating but super slow lol 😂 Honestly a lot more people have been been watching this than I anticipated

    By law, all of the lakers have to be inspected in dry dock - for safety reasons - EVERY 5 years. This was the Lee’s year for that. Thats hull, motor and more and then again, Interlake generally seizes the opportunity to paint them t that time. I lived in Duluth and now Silver Bay. Some legitimate info would be better.

    • @jonathanellsworth21
      @jonathanellsworth21  11 месяцев назад +9

      I believe I said that? Both in the title AND the description lol. Certainly never said or implied otherwise. That’s exactly what they’re doing. Major work on the lower hull and cargo holds, plus a paint job and it’s her turn for inspection. Point being she’s being taken care of, properly. And for an 80 year old ship of her size that’s no small deal, it takes enormous amounts of money. Sure there are a few details missing but shipping companies are notoriously tight lipped on subjects like that. The people who do know all the details almost certainly won’t talk about them. So I’m not exactly sure where you’re coming from here.

      As stated in the comments, she's getting much more than a normal 5 year inspection. Bottom replaced, extensive hold work. Paint of course, after the steel work is done.
