  • Click to Subscribe! ► bit.ly/JOovvU - Welcome to my backyard rock crawling course. On occasion, I hold events here.. so I thought I would practice it up today. I have been rock crawling for 6 years.. and by no means am I a pro. But, I thought I would turn on my camera to capture some of my thoughts - and so I can review my performance.. If any of them can help you too.. then it's an extreme bonus!
I have mounted up these new RC4WD 2.2 Genius Tires on Ballistic Bead Lock Wheels - and they are sick. I want to test them on the rocks, so I am using them on my (now discontinued), Axial XR10 Motor-on-Axle (MOA) Rock Crawler. This truck was built as a kit several years ago, with upgraded hardened gears, suspension links, and little else. I am running a Dual Tekin 35t Brushed Motor setup, with dual ESC's. The Radio system I am using is a Futaba T4PX.
The tires and rims were quite expensive for me. I am in Canada, and go by CAD - but usd - Tires: $60 (for 4) Wheels - $140 for 4. Plus shipping & Tax.
As mentioned in the film - there are multiple sets of rules for Competitive RC Rock Crawling. One set of rules that is very popular are located at the following link: bit.ly/2bXMwiy I believe a poster put these on my RCSparks forum in the year 2012, and are a variation of the old "www.usrcca.com/..." - but this site link (usrcca) is now "closed"
    How scoring works:
Much Like Golf, the person with the Lowest Score WiNS.
Everyone starts at 0 - Check this out... Rules:
-10pnts points for clearing the gate (Start gate may, or may not count) In this film, my start gate does not deduct points.
+10pnts if you touch the gate
+5pnts if you have to roll over the truck, back onto its wheels. If you are reversing while you tip, the rollover points are added, not the reverse point.
+5pnts Be returned to the last completed gate - rear wheels on the gate line.
+10pnts for a complete re-position, or “hand of God” move
+1pnt for a backup move (“rolling backward”, or sliding backwards does not count.) The Backup has to be on purpose, under power.
Normally, this is a timed event. 10 Gates =’s 10 Minutes per round.
So, my score for going through these 8 gates would look like this:
    My Score starts at ZERO.
Start Gate: Clear - No reward
    +5 Rollover before Gate 1:
    -10 gate 1 clear
    -10 gate 2 clear
    -10 gate 3 clear
    -10 gate 4 clear
+5 repo to the last gate 4
    -10 gate 5 clear
    +1 backup Gate 6
    -10 clear gate 6
    +10 touch - gate 7
    +10 touch gate 8
    31 points of infractions
    60 points in deductions
-29 is my score for this round
USUALLY - REAR STEER is iLLEGAL in competition crawling. Really, it just depends on who your group is, and if they allow it.
RC Rock Crawling is a technical, but wonderful challenge! I have many rock crawling videos.. and I hope they get you excited about this part of the hobby!

I'm glad you explained everything in the video! Some other RUclipsrs assume that you would watch their other videos for an explanation so that way they don't have to explain it again and repeat it. While I have done RC for a while, I still learned some new stuff in this video such as dual motors and the scoring system. Thanks!

Phantom Driven So many people (like you say) wont explain it again. This I do not understand. For example, there are 80K people who saw this video. That means there are 7 Billion who didnt.. Lol. In my opinion I should take the time to explain in almost every video.. Lol ;) Thanks for commenting Phantom!

since I first got into the RC hobby 3yrs ago I have tinkered in various corners of it and initially I wrote off crawling as a boring small challenge that wasn't really wasn't my speed. I really appreciate your detailed insight into this incredibly gripping and intense sport. just grabbed an old crawler at yard sale and now I really have a reason to get it up and running.

    • @TheRealRCSparks

Make sure to set up some Gates.. and you will see the challenge becomes even more apparent. Good for you re-visiting this side of the hobby. It is becoming a lost art.. as it is very technical.. and most folks don't have the skill ;) It takes practice of throttle control and wheel placement. Gates are to be 16" apart. Have fun!!

Guys.. Neutrally.. You got to give it to Roman. Love him, or hate him - whatever your stance is.. It's pretty damn cool what he has been able to accomplish. I can tell you that it is hard work. This stuff takes time, planning, cameras in your life ALL the time, and a constant barrage of people judging your life. Im not saying he's an awesome entertainer.. but I am saying - as a fellow RUclipsr - Dang, Pretty cool :)

Personally, I am not a "Roman Soldier".. but I have to respect the effort that goes into making a channel that large.. as well as extra channels, and movies. BUT! I know folks have different opinions - and Im not here to change yours. I seem to be right in the middle of you. I dont watch Roman, but I know this sh!t ai't easy ;) Lol..

    • @tiagotiagot
      @tiagotiagot 8 лет назад

Having independent brakes for each side would've probably helped in a few spots as well. Do they make crawlers like that?

    • @toysoldier46552
      @toysoldier46552 8 лет назад

***** I have not seen any, but they do make at least toy grades with the steering I mentioned so I would assume they make full models with the steering.

    • @TheRealRCSparks
      @TheRealRCSparks  8 лет назад +5

Actually, in all of the Rock Crawler competitions I have been to.. Rear Steer is illegal, and against the rules. But, Yes, a comp with rear steer would be cool to...

NICE Course!! I like your Rig too.... It looks less like a Bug, like most Comp Crawlers. I got back into the Hobby just 2 years ago. I missed the rise of the AX-10s and Bergs. I don't think I missed too much - personal preference - Scale is what got me back in the first place. (I had been out since the early 90's... It became too cutthroat in Competition, and everything seemed to be made with a flat Pan!) 😖
I gotta tell you, after seeing this video, I can now better appreciate the skill and intensity of Comp Crawling!!
    Carmine 🚂

    • @TheRealRCSparks
      @TheRealRCSparks  6 лет назад +4

What an amazing comment to read. Reason being, not a lot of people know about the AX10 and Berg's..so you have been around for a very long time in this game! Yes, competition was fierce.. and that was were I myself, got started. I had no idea that I was entering into a "more advanced" side of the hobby at the time.. I just kinda fell into it at a local meet up I attended. "Teds garage", I have a few videos of it still. I was one of the only people to start running a scale rig.. and was laughed at for walking by myself in the woods with a scale trail truck... Lol. Little did I know that Scale Trail Crawling was about to explode world wide. Im glad you enjoyed this video.. and I was able to share some of my "old experience with you. It still applies today even when you have your trail rig our on the rocks! See you on the Trails, Carmine!

Aaron, I've always loved Scale Trail and Crawling.... I've always loved SCALE!! My modeling started in 1975, with Model Railroading (still in it!). I got into RC around 84-85, when a couple of co-workers came in with a Modified *Hornet and Frog!!!* That got me in, the original Gold Pan RC-10 got me HOOKED! 😱👍👍 The looks and handling were like nothing I had ever seen before. I even ended up being in Semi-Pro 1/10th Buggy, sponsored by Novak and Bolink.......
Are either one still in business??
I worked up through the ranks, making it into 1/8th Nitro Buggies. Dabbled in "Monster Trucks", but they were neither Monster - or a TRUCK!! Just another Flat Pan Buggy, with longer body posts and Shocks....
About as Scale as those Tin Aircraft they sell at cheaper Toy Stores!!!
I was SO disgusted with what they were calling Monster Trucks - that on one Friday Heat, my friend showed up with his Kyosho USA-1, and I with my Clodbuster - - REAL Scale Monster Trucks!!! 😱😜😂😂 (For the time)
We went in during a practice Heat with our Beasts - *and proceeded to RUN OVER Every fake Truck on the Track!!!!* 😂😂😎😀😉
We were BANNED from that Track, and it cost me personally, over $700 in damage to the baby truckies.... But you know what Bud, it was totally worth it!!! 😇
The Buggy Game got SO intense and cutthroat, it was no longer a Hobby. It was no longer fun.... It felt like if I bought the latest Buggy on a Thursday, by the A-MAIN on Saturday - it would feel OBSOLETE! 😫😖
Now, I was making GREAT Money back then, but still understand value.
It felt like pissing into a Forest Fire. *I Raced 1:1 at the same time.* I expected that to be Cash Intensive.
I was also in the US Air Force. In 1991, I had to go to Saudi Arabia, to help Kuwait take back land they had lost, by the greasy hand of Sodom Hussein (purposely misspelled!). Made it all the way through the entire War (that we called "Desert Storm - the Mini-Series on CNN"!) 😀😂😂 LMAO
Then, in the last two weeks of cleanup, me and my CO hit a well placed IED, in our HUMVEE. The Lt. Col. was paralyzed from the Ribs down.....
I broke MANY BONES in both legs a feet, split my left Femur in HALF, cracked Skull, three chipped Vertebrae, both Wrists and 7 Fingers. And *I was* supposed to be the one in better shape!!
THIS will come back to bite me in the Ass, in about 15 more years....
I LOST the pure fun of lighter Competition in small scale RC, and going balls to the wall - with the only damage in a high speed wreck, was a bruised Ego - and Wallet....
So I walked away from the Competition Arena, aboot 1994. Still played! I still regret to this day, selling my original T-MAXX. Nitro...... *with REVERSE??* OMG I was floored!!
I also didn't realize that a few years after I left, some guys started getting together, inventing a NEW Genre to my favorite Hobby...
Many of them Brazed up a basic Roll Cage, and plopped Clod Axles under them, with Servos mounted ON the Axles - FINALLY realizing the promise that Tamiya made about 4-Wheel Steering!
Basically, I believe that I had witnessed...... somewhere near the Birth of the 4WS, Low CG, MOA Rock Crawlers!! 👍👍😵
I watched that absolutely BLOW UP all over the Northern Hemisphere, Europe and Southeast Asia by the end of the Century. (DOESN'T that make a Guy feel OLD!!)
I still wasn't "hooked" back in yet. When the Competition really heated up, those Rigs ended up costing $800 - $1500 *or MORE!!* And, in my opinion, looked like BUGS!! 😖 Nearly OVER Capable, they could slink all over the Rocks, like a Gecko. The "Body" became basically an Insect Shell...
Their capabilities could NOT be denied!
Please, *Don't get me Wrong!!* Those Rigs represented a TONNE of R&D, many hours of sweat, swearing, busted knuckles, and a LOT of good 'ol Know How!! 👍👍
Like I said, about a Month ago, at the start of this Book(!!!), I could never appreciate the way they LOOKED. But I knew that a small number of guys were on to SOMETHING!
Since the mid Eighties, I lived on the Shore of Long Island, NY.... By the end of the 80's, I made a couple of "Beach Walking Buddies". Basically, *Trail Trucks!*
I seriously geared down a Tamiya Blackfoot and Nissan King Cab (I MISS that King Cab more than ANYTHING!!) 😐😭😭😭
~ To Date, MOST people still don't know that the Tamiya King Cab "borrowed" most of Associated's "Rock Crusher" Transmission - AND that to date, is the ONLY Truck that Tamiya ever made, with a 12.2" Wheelbase!!! 😱 Anyway, I made interiors for them, with the rigid Plastic Tamiya Drivers from the Bruiser. (Talk about an incredible Rig!!)
I believe that was the Rig that INVENTED "Scale".
Anyway, NO chance of making this short! (Sorrey!)
Moving to 2015..... *EVERYTHING* went Wrong, and exponentially BAD!
It started in March. I lost BOTH of my Parents, 33 days apart. Keeping them going as long as I did, nearly depleted my life savings.
My Dad *was TRULY* an American Hero! Because of this, he and Mama were Honored with a Full Dress Service and Burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Almost all expenses paid - EXCEPT for transportation of their Bodies across the Country. I am now in Arizona, Arlington is in Washington DC. The whole experience COMPLETELY tapped us out....
(REALLY. The House forclosed, because we didn't have ANY money for over 6 Months, I had to sell my sweet Mustang GT, and 90% of my RCs - to not even break even.
We became Homeless, Car-Less, Hungry and truly Dirt Poor.....
I made the mistake of putting up a GoFundMe page. How humiliating! The Page got buried among MILLIONS of others, those who did see it, made RUDE comments, told me that I was full of Crap. My "favorite", the ONLY Guy that actually helped a little, sent $50, and said "Here. Take your Wife out to Dinner, quit whining, and go get a JOB"
WHAT A GOOD IDEA!! Wish I had thought of that.
At that same time period, I severely strained my broken body, moving around my 500lb Mama.... Mid-2014, I was taking so much time off for medical reasons, my Boss suggested that I take an early Retirement - which was easily better than the alternative. So, I became a 48 year old, disgruntled Retiree!! Disability Pay from the Air Force kicked in, but is just enough to be POOR! 😖
So, yes, ALL this is a LOT for someone who doesn't know us, quite hard to swallow....
      But, FATE wasn't done yet....
On 18 Sep 2016, my 28 year old Daughter was driving out to visit. She was *T-BONED* by a speeding Semi........ KILLED instantly, we were told.
Like that could have made it ANY better! 💔💔💔
WORSE? We were STILL busted broke and starving. We COULD NOT afford to go across Country for *my Babygirl's Funeral!!* 💔 I was a level of shattered, that nearly ended me...
I was NOT doing GoFundMe again!!!
A friend suggested that I try PayPal's donation service, paypal.me
Free for Sender and Receiver. The catch is, it doesn't automatically put itself out there.... *I have to* share my link with Groups, Friends and Family. That's humiliating!
Hey! One good friend actually GAVE me an Axial Wraith Spawn Kit!!! Another two had given me some hop-up parts for it! I'm SO Blown Away by somebody's pure generosity. They didn't even know me that well... I was Humbled and Blessed by that!
It's currently my ONLY Axial Product ever! I gotta say, having something purely FUN to do, has been great for my health!! I at least FEEL somewhat better.
So, I started putting my Link out there, sharing my depressing story each time...
Within 8 Months, quarter of my Model Railroading "friends" either blocked me, or unfriended me.
*Two-Thirds of my RC friends* blocked or unfriended me!
Most of my Facebook"friends" - GONE too.
A few told me some version of "if you're going to BS us for money, at least make it a more believable story".
3 RC friends and 18 Model Railroading friends actually helped, as much as they could.... I KNOW that at least 4 of them could not afford it themselves!! Great people.
Not nearly enough, but we're humbled, and appreciated EVERY Penny!!
I haven't shared my donation Link in over 7 Months.......
I can't believe that my Government DOESN'T Give me enough to survive!
In the past 22 Months, I've actually lost 118lbs!!
Sure, I really needed to, but not by starvation. I'm also Diabetic, and half of my Medical Care is NO LONGER Covered, thanks to Obamascare!! 😖
Can't afford co-pays, even WHEN I can get to a Doctor.
The MORE I tell about our situation, the more COMPLETELY UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE it Sounds!
I don't know how to help us.
Well friend, I went overboard, and have caught you up pretty much from 15 years old to today!!

I remember RC car action running a article on how the Moa was a the best choice in comp style rock crawling. (Early 2000). But the cost of two motors and a esc that could handle it was too much for most. This is why the scaler movement became more popular killing the hard co rock comp. Also I feel like most that we didn't always wanted a racer but, something close to a 1:1.
I would still like a Moa just because they are different.

    • @pedrolahoz
      @pedrolahoz 2 года назад

Moa’s allow for much harder lines, but render pointless what are hard lines for axle driven trucks. Though you may enjoy turning the plate around on lines that usually humiliate your axle truck efforts.

I never got into comp crawling but I do miss my old traxxas rig wasn't anything special (early 90's era) about it just a basic baja truck body on a dog common frame with a few upgrades to the motors gears servos etc... but it was a blast to go out and whip around in the sand at the beach.
thanks for showing me there's still life and even competition in the rc world that looks fun
    Cheers bud!
