Do you think it's okay for new riders to learn on an AUTOMATIC motorcycle?

    • @escrow5354
      @escrow5354 3 года назад +18

I really think it depends on the rider and what their comfort level is with learning to shift. When I was learning on a Rebel 300 with zero previous experience with manual transmissions it was a lot with all the other things being thrown at me all at once. Now that I have more experience, I’ve moved onto a CTX 700 DCT and love just being able to enjoy the ride and focus on my surroundings. The Navi could be the first step to get folks intimidated by shifting into riding.

In my view that's a no. Might be best to learn the hard way first with shifting and later on ease up on the shifting on an automatic, not the other way around.

I'm recovering from a stroke so sold my two classic Honda bikes a 73 CB450 and a 78 XL125. As I got better I got my balance back bicycling around the neighborhood. Now I've got myself a grasshopper green Navi, love the color and visibility of it and the fact it's an automatic but still has a tank between my legs. Rode home from the dealer in the next town and then rode the country backroads to my job. So when I return to work soon it's going to be perfect and save money over driving my SUV. I'll still use the SUV on rainy days though.
It's great that Honda has given us something a little different to choose from and an option for people in situations like mine to keep on riding, I'm 62 and wasn't ready to give up two wheels but my health dictated that I needed to make some changes. It's a great little bike.

I have found that smaller motorcycles are fun to ride. They are easy to handle, and some of them have a torque-to-weight ratio that can give wicked acceleration - especially when pulling away from a standing start. The best motorcycle I ever owned was a Suzuki TC90. I should have kept it. But at the time, I mistakenly thought I was "upgrading" to a larger bike.

I bet 60% of current riders began on dirt bikes but, these things might well be the beginner's bike for the 21st Century riders. I'm not troubled by automatic's for beginners. The more riders the better IMHO. BTW Jess, hope you can make it to Amanda's Rocky Mountain Roll. The best time you'll ever have with fellow moto-campers in what may be North America's most scenic pasture. A long ride from Buckeye-dom for sure. If you make it, be sure to go a bit further north and west to Ride US 12 into Idaho. The greatest ride in North America, without question. All others pale in comparison.

This seems to be a great option for an entry level bike. Appreciate it for what it is and have fun. For @ $1807.00 you get a starter bike for mainly around town riding, under 50mph for the most part. And you get well over 100 mpg. Mini bikes and go karts have similar power trains, and people graduated to larger machines with manual gearboxes. If the new Goldwing with the automatic/cvt transmission is good in sales, we may see that as an option on more motorcycles in the near future. Just like in cars where sales of manual transmissions have dropped into the single digit percentile. I prefer manual transmissions, but with the newer generations of more fuel efficient automatic/cvt units may be taking over.

Most importantly it’s fun to ride. We need more riders and less judging. It’s more fun to ride a slow bike fast then a fast bike slow. Plus the motor is bulletproof. It’s not to good for the people of India and Mexico.

In the UK, at 16-years old it’s probably the largest portion of new riders as you’re limited to 50cc. At 17 you can go to a 125cc and even then a lot stick with no geared bikes. At 19 you can go to max 395cc and max 47BHP, that’s when most go to geared machines. You have to stay on these small machines for two years, then do another test to get on bigger bikes. Alternatively you can wait till you’re 24 (21 if you did the 2-years on the 47BHP bike already) and go for direct access and you can ride a 595cc / 54BHP for training and test then anything goes.

I really enjoyed this video. You do a very good honest review. I dont want a shift motorcycle so this was very informative. I know youre an excellent motorcycle rider and can ride full sized big bikes so i trust your opinion of this Navi for a beginner . Thank you for doing this review Jess. It was very helpful. It looks fun.

Back in the early 80's, I started on a cm400 Hawk with a 2 speed auto trans. It was a gas to learn on. But size was an issue as I'm 6 ft and 250 lbs at the time. Next was the cb750 k and v65 Magna. The magna scared the snot out of my wife and she didn't like it. After 3 months, we traded it in for a 1984 gl1200 Goldwing. Loved that bike to pieces. Currently have a 86 xvz1300 venture royale in pieces. Looking to rescue it and maybe get another Goldwing in the future. Tried all spring and summer but no one would carry a contract for a used Goldwing so here I sit with no bike that runs.

I also bought a livewire deal mar cause it’s awesome and automatic. I’m buying this cause I need a small bike to take me to the train.
I don’t want to worry about clutch at all lol

Just "twist and go" is the best convenience.
There are over 20 million scooters in Taiwan of 23 million people. Most of them are scooters with CVT belt-driven of "twist and go" style. Both "Kymco" and "Sym" scooters are made in Taiwan for over 60 years with robustness. Kymco is making "J300" big scooters for Kawasaki while delivering 650 c.c. engines to BMW.

Hi jess this is oldhelmet im just using my friends phone i think for us asians its a regular rides for most people here bc america have wider roads but believed me in asia its very useful in traffic bc its a small size . And to make fast the automatic motorcycles is you have to full throttle then release your grip on the throttle then grip it again to full throttle it will reach maybe 100 kph. You can watch thailands drag race automatic scooters. I hope i have answered the question of how to make speed of this little bike. And yes it is fun to ride too with smaller bikes.

  • @gnudoll

Looks like the Navi would be a decent beginner/city bike. The small size and ease of not needing to shift means you can concentrate on the other aspects of riding ( handling, hazard detection, etc) without being distracted by needing to deal with a transmission you are not comfortable with. You can learn the transmission by itself later. One other comment, however, is that if you are WOT all the time, the bike *is* underpowered for you. I saw you being passed a couple of times while you said you were giving it all it had. That's actually dangerous. A fully automatic motorcycle is an interesting concept, but perhaps the DCT is a better option in this case. If the Navi had a bit more power ( make it a 125cc or a 175cc) I think that might be a better solution.

Living in Florida😎 where it's pretty flat, I'm looking at the Navi as an around towner machine. With the 100mpg rating, and $1800 sticker, I may just buy one for errands. I had a Yamaha Vino 125, and it was a fun ride with mega storage under the seat....👍😺

Have a Benelli Tnt 125 and basically its the same as this, except for the clutch, that i have. It's not the speedest bike, but last year during summer i drove 7500km up and down the French Alps, completed the 7 most high hills France/Italy and now i'm over 10000 km and still goes perfectly!! As i said, these are not the best performance bikes, but they have lots of character!

The last thing: if you are short is perfect, maybe a normal/tall person will find this bike a little toy and not enough powerful, but it's normal! For me personally sometimes is a bit too heavy to maneuver, but i'm 1,60m for 40kg (an hobbit) :D

To me it looks like a pit bike or a town bike as you’re stated. New riders need to realize that when you take you test for your license you have to maneuver around a circle as well as cone maneuvers. I think this would be a excellent bike for your license test.

I don’t currently own a motorcycle, but I owned several of them in the past. I’m fine with driving a car that has a manual transmission, but shifting a motorcycle is ridiculously awkward. My next motorcycle will definitely have some type of automatic transmission.

I'm not a mechanic or anything like that, but here's my opinion:
    * I changed the bulb I had, as it did not illuminate much.
    * I also changed the spark plug wire and the spark plug for an NGK iridium, I feel that the gasoline performs a little better and it no longer happens to me that the motorcycle turns off of nowhere.
Of course, if it's cold you have to let it warm up first.
    * Maybe it would be better if it were double suspension because sometimes It feels hard when I go through imperfect roads. (If you recommend one that I can replace it with, do tell me).
    * My height is 1.70 Cm: The driving position is comfortable.
    * The maximum speed is 80 Km/H ... it gets a bit boring with time, but the truth is that it reaches everywhere with patience.
    * It is quite Agile, small, and easy to filter with it ... but due to the weight, the other cars move you a bit when you go on the road.
    * I would like it to have disc brakes so I can fit a disc lock. When I have to leave it for many hours outside of a place I usually tie it with a cable ... but there is not always a place where I can tie it.
    * It is Automatic, comfortable above all in the city. My first bike turned off all the time since I'm not that good with the clutch.
    Cons:
    * That 3-liter gas tank has me going to the gas station constantly. (If I could replace it with a 6 or 10 that would be cool)
    * The maximum speed is 80 Km/H, it becomes quite difficult to pass on the highway (I know it is for the city, but there are times when you want to go someplace far away from the city)
    * The trunk they sell you separately to store your things is way too small and fragile. I won't be using it as much the day I find a good trunk to put behind the Motorcycle, but I have to check the weight limit of the rack first. Or see if I can tie a suitcase behind. (Recommend me a good trunk and rack)
    * The technical sheet says that they are like 60 Km/Lt, actually it gives 30 Km/Lt

I have watched many videos about this new bike and yours was the best, by far. I don't quite understand why it is not at least 150cc though, to compete with scooters. A 50cc (based on my experience) is almost useless and a 150cc is a sweet spot for urban commuting. I never wished I could go slower. Still, it is 2-3 thousand dollars less than a Vespa.

Seems like a cool little ride for someone starting out. Me personally I don’t like auto bikes, that takes most of the fun and learning out of riding. That’s like teaching a new driver to drive an auto and them having that free hand to play with cellies or radio. Cali looks bootiful. Would rather be there or in Florida riding year round (with Shadetree, Flip and Family) in great weather though. Very nice video sweet lass. Ride on and peace out.

If you lived in the city, this thing would be awesome. I'd be too worried about not keeping up in more rural areas as most country roads are 55 here and id be full throttle the entire time. If only they had an automatic that was more like 250-300cc!

I suspect that some people will want to ride motorcycle because this is an automatic but we need to remember that Honda came out with an automatic back in the 1970's (550 and 750 I think) and they did not sell very well. Who knows with the folks today who for the most part never had to learn how to shift a standard transmission. This might be a bike for a city person looking for something small and with great gas mileage

  • @davebrown3117
    @davebrown3117 3 года назад

In Australia, that bike is actually treated as a motor scooter because it has a CVT, not a motorcycle and is easier to get out on the road than if you had a 125cc Honda Cub with an automatic clutch and 4 speeds.
Given a choice, I would pick the 125 Cub over the Navi mainly because I have fond memories of riding the Honda CT90 with dual range transmission on the farm of when I was about 10-12. The CT 90 was not slow, they had high compression pistons that loved high octane leaded fuel back in the 1970s. I think they had something like 8.6 HP and could do over 60 miles per hour if you crouched down on handlebars a bit.
But yeah, maybe you could sneak it into an apartment rather than risking the car park or chaining it to a convenient power pole out on the side of the road. Could be great for inner city commuters or cafe cruiser hipster types.
