Looked up "Roger Scarlett" and...WHAAAAT?! "Roger Scarlett was the pen name of Dorothy Blair (1903-1976) and Evelyn Page (1902-1977), who were life partners and in the early 1930s wrote five golden age mystery novels together. They are believed to be the 'first same-sex couple to write mysteries.'" Will be adding the Inspector Kane mysteries to my TBR.

My grandmothers life was The Grapes of Wrath. She crossed the country with eleven people in a Model T truck. One of the highlights of her diary was finding an extra pair of socks at a campsite that someone else left behind.

I used to like the Mary Russell books but I feel off like a decade ago. Also, it turns out my grandparents knew the author and finding out some stuff about her relationship with her husband explained so much about Mary & Holmes' relationship XD (Laurie R King was his student and it was apparently a minor scandal)

First-footing (being the first visitors after New Year) is a specifically Scottish tradition. I used to visit family in Scotland over Hogmanay when I was a kid, and remember when the first-footers would arrive. It's not observed in England at all.

Steinbeck is hard for me. His stuff is so Christian-based that non-Christians can miss A LOT of the thematic stuff and references. It goes beyond the general “salt of the earth” vibe you get in a lot of rustic Americana. I’d be interested in seeing your take on some of it….I’m still scarred by my 10th grade English teacher reprimanding his predominantly Jewish class for not knowing what was going on when a character with the initials JC said “You don’t know what you’re doing.” Because we simply didn’t know.

I think you would really enjoy continuing the Mary Russell series! It never really includes much of the "romance" between Mary and Sherlock. It always focuses on building the mystery or Mary's character development and her studies. Really recommend it! :) I've read the first 4 books and they all have their own charm that made them unputdownable lol

I really hated Grapes of Wrath in high school, too. I am 70, and I still have a hard time with books that are depressing, especially war or Dystopian. I can handle mysteries. I read The Handmaid's Tale this year, and I had to read 5 lighter books to recover, before I could tackle serious books again. This makes it hard for me to get through the classics that I want to have read. I found your channel during the pandemic by searching " reading classics" on RUclips. I hope you will post about more classics. I am trying to read the 100 books on the PBS Great American Read project, and I am making very slow headway. For as old as I am, I don't have the literary background I wish I had.

I haven't read Wolf Hall but I thought the BBC miniseries was really good. All the casting was great, but I especially thought that the guy who plays Cromwell, Mark Rylance, did a really fantastic job with a character that is clearly strong and intelligent yet keeps a lot in, something that is obviously an advantage in Henry VIII's court, and thanks to the actor's performance you can just see it under the surface. I wanted to pick up Wolf Hall thinking it must be from the POV of this really fascinating character, and now I'm not so sure anymore, lol.

I’m not a huge fan of Of Mice and Men, I never believed George was Lennie’s friend, and I find the depiction of Lennie horrifying. The idea that a disabled man can murder someone because he doesn’t know his own strength is the kind of horrifying shit ableists say to keep disabled people institutionalised.
I find the point of the story that disabled people aren’t human and ‘decent’ people will put us down like dogs.
I had to read it at school, but I was ‘lucky’, none of my disabilities were diagnosed at school. There was a twitter discussion recently about reading it in school and several disabled people shared how they had to sit and listen to people debate if it’s okay to kill disabled people, and in most cases the teacher let it go, in some actually joined in.

What the hell? That is so fucked up... I thought the point of the story was that the system is rigged to keep the marginalized down, but probably I just completely missed the ableism element due to my own biases. I cannot believe teachers would focus on that as a legitimate discussion item

I loved the Beekeeper's Apprentice! I didn't know about their romance when I read it and I was obsessed. And then I read book 2 and was freaked out by the romance. Absolutely the fuck not. So disgusting. I wish I had stopped at book 1. I'll probably reread it at some point (I read it like 5 years ago) and am going to pretend it's a standalone.

  • @IrmiRose

I love the Mary Russell books (although am not caught up). If I remember correctly, there isn’t any reflection of any sexual aspect to their marriage, is there? I get your ick but I’m just trying to imagine alternatives to heteronormative marriage that we are led to believe is the only thing that ever existed. Maybe it’s a queer marriage of it’s day? Mutual intellectual attraction? Savior complex? It was written in the mid-90s.
I remember really loving Justice Hall in particular and I admire your taste in books so maybe I’m just playing advocate so I’m not missing out on doing a re-read with you 😂
Ps: I really recommend the TV adaptation of Raven Black. I love the ITV series based on the Jimmy Perez books (almost as much as I love it’s sister series Vera). You might enjoy it much more. 😊

I feel so gratified that I guessed the winner of each match-up correctly. Though that's probably because I've read two of them. I read The Beekeeper's Apprentice in high school and really liked it. I probably would have continued if the sequels were at my library. Your love of it makes me think that I should give it a reread. I think Of Mice and Men was a book I read in college, and it gripped me, too. It's really raw in a way that I think resonates, even when the language is...of it's time.

Loved the head to head idea.
Next TBR knockdown video idea: each book chosen is a different genre. Rank them based on your fav genres, and then after reading all of them see if that standing holds up. You could even do 3 sets. Example, you rank 3 sets of 3 books from 3 repeating genres (like mystery, horror, and fantasy in each set). I assume you’d rank mystery first, then read to see if mystery wins in each set.

The Mary Russell books are favorites of mine and I would read the second, A Monstrous Regiment of Women, for it's discussions of feminism and faith. I get the age gap issue, but it is handled well - Mary is fully adult before any change in the relationship happens and she has a great deal of agency throughout the series. in fact, one of the things I like about this series is how independent they both are.

She literally had to go get another teacher from next door to calm us down because the class in general was yelling at her "how dare you not warn us" and "why did you make us read this" and people were crying because they were so upset with the ending of the book and how certain characters were treated.

Speaking of books you were forced to read in HS or College that one hated.... Mary Shelley's Frankensten - somehow I was forced to read it THREE times and hated it more each time. And I completely understand the ick on an age gap romance where the first encounter is as a child - especially if there is interaction until the younger becomes an adult gets to borderline grooming territory. I think that is why I was going into reading slumps in some of my previous reading years. I am also focused on reading more classical literature this year-I finished East of Eden by Steinbeck at the end of February and it was great! I have planned to make August my month to read books about animals so you have given me some ideas. But I am hoping to mainly read books l already own. April will be autobiographies (plus biographies) because l do own a lot of those.

I didn’t get past the first scene of Wolf Hall. I won’t read books with violence towards children. I always wondered if I was missing out on a great story, so I feel better about my decision to dnf after a few pages.

The point is he gets away from his violent father and makes a point of never behaving like that to his own children, or the other children in his care. It’s one of the greatest novels of the past fifty years. It is absolutely a modern classic.

Loved this vlog! Wolf Hall has been on my shelf for years, but after this and Liene’s review I’m reconsidering.
Have you read any of the Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas? I’ve only read the first two but thought they were fun.

I adore Wolf Hall, but I love big chunky books.

I also started the Mary Russell series this year (also 4.5⭐) and I just started the second in the series. The age difference doesnt bother me -- by the end of the first book, Mary is what? 20? She was in college, living on her own -- and not the least bit child-like. I could see it bothering me in another book though, so I get it.

Yeah, if only he hadn't met her when she was 15! By the end of the book it completely makes sense why they might get together, but it just nags at me that he could have been seen as grooming her by their dynamic at the beginning :/

Yeah, I do get it, Mara .. it just didnt bother me this time. I saw it more as mentor-student relationship that evolved.

Totally don’t get Bunny. Wanted to stop reading it but kept waiting for it to come together. Never did for me.

Me too. I kept wondering when it would get better. I found the main character Insufferable.
