Would say don't bother max awakening Rare units. The ones that can evolve varies but a normal rare like Knight is just trolling. Have to get a reset awakening to get most of my goodies back and that's more rare than a ex weapon pull.
@bnneeboy you get diamonds and the character gets a small boost in stats. It's by the person but my experience had me wishing to make better choices. Unless they awaken Gremory, then I have no regrets.

you could also get some from the caravan shop or by chopping down bushes and trees, although they’re inconsistent

I Awaken rare units just for the boost (atk boost units only)
You can get some legendary stones exchanging them for dream stones in the inventory, i think that's a good deal
Dream stones are not really worth it unless most of your characters are already mlb

Don't worry about exp, I have like 50% of my heroes max level and never did exp dungeon
