Ani DiFranco catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about Unpresidented Sh!t, an album that finds her working with a producer for the first time and exploring electronic sounds in ways she hadn’t in the past. The singer-songwriter unwraps some of the heavier topics in the LP, as in the backstory of Roe V Wade and how abortion became a political device in her song “Baby Roe” and gender identity. DiFranco goes on to stress the importance of pop stars like Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and Billie Eilish using their voices to activate their fans, as well as what its been like performing on Broadway as Persephone in Hadestown.

That Ani managed to put together an hour to talk about Unprecedented Sh!t while doing 8 shows a week on Broadway speaks volumes about how much this person has her shit together.
I was lucky enough to see her play Persephone on Broadway and she was absolutely amazing. No novice vibes at all, just total confidence and owning the part with reverence. Granted, the cast was the best, It is Broadway, but she channeled her love into the part.
Her new album, where she relinquishes some control to a producer, is remarkable, and I love that she is trying new things.
