I chose NAPs that help with the career or skills. Then, if you do everything that Catchy Virus suggests too, you'll have even more advantages.
My sim made a baby with Crinkletop, he is very helpful on the farm but he steals grapes. You have to lock those plants away. I always play the welcome wagon to make friends fast.

You can vote on them at the mailbox over the weekend, and they go into effect at 6 pm on Mondays. Meeting people and doing socials earn you voting points. You can also repeal any community actions you don't like. For example, I hate "sharing is caring" because they steal stuff. You can turn it off completely or make it so that only your votes count. There can be only four active at a time. In evergreen harbor, you can change the way communities look and vote on community lots by voting at the glowing boards. There is no cross pack integration, tho, so only that "world" is affected for such improvements.

One thing I hardly ever see mentioned when talking about weight gain is to stop your Sim from eating when they are full. When their hunger bar is maxed, cancel the eating activity. Unless your Sim is eating a lot of fatty foods, this usually keeps them from gaining weight, I've found.
You mention dealing with emotions, like sadness. One great trait to have is Cheerful. When your Sim is having a negative emotion, a cheerful Sim has an option to "Look at the Bright Side," which will drastically shorten the amount of time they feel the negative emotion. Great for when a Sim or pet they love dies. Instead of being Very Sad for 2 days, they will only be sad for a matter of hours.
Cool Kitchen is an awesome pack and it is often overlooked. I recommend it. Also, when it comes to fitness I strongly recommend the soccer ball from Discover University. As fitness items go, it seems to work the best. The sims will autonomously kick the soccer ball and it is a little annoying but it increases fitness faster than any other item. My sims always end up ripped when I let them have the soccer ball.
Something I do in any fresh save where I use a maxis house is check the bed, toilet, shower, stove, and fridge. For some reason almost all the maxis builds have those things at the worst version. For the bed, toilet, and shower that means your sim will get uncomfortable if they use it. For the fridge and stove, if those are the lowest version, you are just begging for a fire when your sim still has 0 cooking. Also after all those are swapped out with slightly better versions, I get a smoke alarm before I let any sim even touch the stove for even a grilled cheese. Finally if the lot doesn't have a computer, and if I don't have enough remaining funds to get one, I'll sell off various clutter that doesn't actually do anything. There are so many actions tied to having a computer, that I don't want to have to go to the library all the time to get them done. (I'm looking at all the daily work tasks that need a computer mostly)
One of my pro tips is to have items they need and then store them in their household inventory when not in use. As if, those things are storable when they’re really not. I can’t make room for every single thing my sim needs. I store the gaming table, the research machine, the video upload table, a lot of toys the kids use, bars, etc. It’s a big help.
I have more than 7K hours in the game, but I still learned something. For instance I had my toddler singing songs and telling stories to my infant. I made mother clean the cow for 10 time, because she thinks that only she is allowed to make an infant happy.

Gardening is bugged atm though, so i have to not garden and do paintings and make stuff on the woodworking table If my sims have a dog, i get them to go jogging, gets their athletic skill up, and and keeps them a bit fitter, and raises friendship with the pet too :D I always have the popcorn maker for a family, so that the kids can just grab some :D Didn't they 'fix' the bug that increased your sims friendships when taking pics with other sims? Oooh i didn't know about sending thankyou cards to sims via the mailbox when thankful was active :)
I suggest woodworking. It may not be as lucrative as other side hustles but it gives you the handiness needed to upgrade your furniture (sims sleep much faster in an upgraded bed). My favorite bonus traits are knowledge (boost skill gain) and nature (find collectibles). If I find that I picked the wrong one I pick a new one with the cas.fulleditmode cheat. I don't like cooking much, not even garden salad. Muggle sims who can't eat Grand Delicioso eat from the basegame snack pack instead. Sure, they gain weight, but sims who like fitness use workout items autonomously. Never have I ever bought a potion from the reward store. I love those sweet sweet reward traits too much. So I choose the friend of the world aspiration and meet ten Sims. Then I switch to Joke Star and tell five of them a joke.... and so forth. Before I know it I have the 5000pts for the money tree seed. Seeds can be multiplied with the scientific cloning machine or the copypasto spell. Unscientific muggle sims can always take cuttings from their (evolved) money trees.

I just started the plant sims scenario and been solo planting now I'm gonna try some of these
