Great exercise! If your gym has one of those old "triceps" bars (with the parallel handles), try it. It's a little easier to control and I find it doesn't scrape against the leg as much

This exercise is training core stability. Not using straps means your grip is the limiting factor. If your core can handle 100kg but your grip only 60kg then you can only train your core (object of the exercise) to 60kg which is sub optimal.

Honestly this is not a one arm deadlift. It’s seems they added suitcase in the front of the word and call it deadlift. Barbell in front of you with one arm deadlift is much much harder. I can shrug 160 lbs one arm, now I just bend my knee down then call it suitcase deadlift... sorry good exercise but they should just call it suitcase exercise.

It's a Deadlift, any stationary object lifted from the floor is a deadlift, the weight is "dead" and starts from the bottom up with no stretch reflex such as in a squat or bench press which both start from the top position. And this lift with the bar on the side of the body is WAY harder than lifting it infront, what on earth are you talking about? Learn human physics.

@@jlo8775what is the point you’re trying to make?
Whether my DL PR in competition is 200 or 300 or 400 kg, what does that have to do with using straps in this exercise?
Very few people are limited in DL by their grip. Unless you have a specific goal to have a stronger grip, straps are a very effective tool to assist you in lifting more weight or doing more reps.
I use straps on every set of my DL and DL variations, with the exception of my warm ups, singles, and first back off sets.
What is the point you are trying to make? Please articulate it clearly.

    • @thatstheway2429

@@jlo8775 Hello J Lo, thanks for your response.
While I appreciate the strawman here, no, I do not constantly wear wrist straps and carry them around. As mentioned, I do not use them on my singles and my heaviest top set. I can't remember a single time in the past 6 or 7 years where grip has ever been a problem for me deadlifting.
If I have enough grip strength to pull my 1 rep max without even worrying about grip strength, then I don't think I need a stronger grip. I am highly confident that having a stronger back or hamstrings will serve me much better in building a strong.
Nowhere did I say that grip strength isn't important. However, grip strength is certainly not a key part in EVERYTHING as you say. If this is true, please provide a citation here because it's severely missing.
I'm not sure I've seen any evidence that grip strength plays a major role in the following:
      - lifespan
      - prevention of chronic disease
      - front squatting
      - back squatting
      - bench pressing
      - cardiovascular endurance and overall conditioning
      - really any general health outcome
Strength is specific. The most applicable outcome in which grip strength is likely...grip strength, if you were to apply some sort of test.
And again, why would you need straps? It's simply another way to add additional volume and fatigue by increasing loads.
Let's just speak hypothetically, and say my programming is a heavy single at 88-92% (roughly RPE 9). And then I have 5 backoff sets of 3 at ~70%.
I do the single, and the first two sets without straps. Great. Grip is not an issue. But, I can anticipate training fatigue setting in, and I know the day after I have rack pulls, and later in the week RDLs.
Using straps on those last few sets may allow me to lift the same weight while preserving training resources for remaining work. The main reason why I need my grip is potentially because I'm competing, and in almost every federation you cannot use straps on the DL. But again, there is nothing here to suggest that I will be unable to hit my 1 rep max without using straps.
Straps are just a tool. A very effective tool at that. You can live a full and complete life never using straps. You can also do every single deadlift in your life using straps, and still leave a complete fulfilling life. The only thing realistically you will be limited by is your competition DL. Don't worry, you'll still be able to grab a baseball and open jars in the kitchen.
