That is because it's our fault for not hearing or paying attention to our surroundings. While most horror games requires cheap jump scares. If there is a game similar to STALKER on the horror aspect, that would be Darkwood.
The thing that its scarier than the other games is because of the element of surprise. Some games are scripted and overtime the scary part goes from zero to none once we get used to it.

I'll remember for a long time how I mag dumped with AK-74 my first bloodsucker in SoC. Of course Agroprom, beat the bandits and then I hear a screech. I could have been terrified even more if I haven't seen bloodsucker edges while it was invisible.
Anomaly is a mod that gave me a tense experience, unusual things that never happened to me in vanilla trilogy, happened there. Many of "heart attacks" happens from a stalker stealthy attack, chimeras and lurkers.
For ultimate jumpscare experience, try walking around at Truck Cemetery, Red Forest, and CoP maps (Zaton, Jupiter, Outskirts) at night with no NVG. Or Agroprom if you are at early game (Controllers and Chimeras can spawn there rarely)
Whenever you shit your pants and have a stalker moment it’s probably just best to set the headset down and reflect on the blood pressure spike you just had.

If anyone is reading these comments, never, ever, stopping that one part of the truck cemetery you see in this video. The area around that Tower is a death trap. In every version of anomaly I've played, there is always a high tier mutant in that area.
One time I'm walking on a grassy hill in agroprom, using binoculars to check if there were mutants distant ahead, suddenly a very close "Sloshu chibeah！" caught me off guard, it was a Clear sky occasionally walked by, greeting beside me.
Just visited the Truck Cemetary for the first time yesterday in Anomaly as a novice Loner. Never encountered a single living soul. Only now I understand how lucky I was.
Just had turned the brain scorcher off and got out of bullets on the process, 2 buckshots for my saiga12 and 8 7,62 for my AEK-973, overweight, having to stop every few meters to get the stamina up, PDA battery discharged, change the battery and before the animation is finished a Chimera comes from no fucking where, my only two buckshots hit but weren't enough, 4 more bullets from the AEK had to be uses to put the beast down while I gave my best to avoid it's attacks while encumbered. Note to myself in the future, get more than 200 7,62 and 150 buckshots with me when going to the brain scorcher

This game is so unique imho. I've only "touched" the game (played it for like 30 minutes) and couldnt progress (im dumb). But every gameplay footage I see it looks so athmospheric and interesting! btw: is there any chance i can play it in mp with some friends? Maybe with a mod or something?
I was at the campfire under the road near rookie village eating some beans when I hear abunch of foot steps coming towards me…as I turn my light on it’s 4 cats 7 feet away from me… I screamed like a little bitch and ran my ass back to the village where I thought I was safe til I turn around and get mauled by all of them FUCK THIS GAME (it’s a great game)
You could have avoided a good number of these attacks if you moved more methodical instead of sprinting like a mad man :D But yeah, as others have said: very relatable
