  • In Saint Petersburg, early 1874, Vladimir Stasov arranged an exhibition of paintings and drawings by the Russian architect Viktor Hartmann, who died suddenly in the previous year, at the age of 39. The event made a profound impression on Hartmann’s friend, Modest Mussorgski, who immediately set about composing his “Pictures at an Exhibition”. The work was written as a tribute to a lost friend; but in the mind of a composer of genius, it became a great deal more than that.

Critisized for a lack of formal education/mastership..? To me Mussorgski will always be one of the best composers who ever lived. Grew up with Pictures At An Exhibition- shaped my taste in classical music from an early age- very close to my heart & mind still. I like Ashkenazy comparing Mussorgski to a diamond in the rough- no polishing required.

Merci cher Vladimir....P.

He belonged to the mighty handful which did not believe in structured musical education a la conservatories believing that it would destroy Russian music. Ironically Rimsky-Korsakov ,also a member of the handful, was appointed a professor at the St Petersburg conservatory having no music education and therefore became one of its best pupils. Rimsky left an autobiography My musical life.
