I have the plant in a south face window, almost into the glass so it's getting lots of light. Winter had sun on it. With your auntie's plant it seems that she should have done something earlier on her own. It would have been a lot easier back them. I'm 71 and I figured it out.

I think it should be an experiment though that I or someone else try growing a monstera in other directions other than just vertical I mean because eventually you're going to have to chop it and I'm pretty sure that if you ever want it to produce fruit that won't ever happen if you're only growing it vertical
I’ve corrected the problem with an axe. The property I bought had multiple HUGE monsteria. I was in my backyard and I watched a 40 metre palm fall to ground because the monsteria was so huge that it broke the palm with its weight. Yep. I’ve got pics. I live in far North Queensland and these grow wild and out of control.

Extremely good advice! One of my monstera got out of control and I had to cut'n'prop to get it back on track. It was painful, mainly for me because I had to lose a fair chunk of the original plant. I bought another Monstera (an albo!) around 6 months ago. It was a bit wonky. I wasn't able to get it on a pole/plank because of that but I repotted it and buried the the aerial roots in the soil to straighten it a bit. It's been growing strong and vertically and I will be able to repot it once again, probably at the end of summer, onto a pole and watch it grow away!
I have watched a lot of your videos. Most of them a few times. I still feel dismayed. I was gifted a monstera. I gave it the correct soil. I cut leaves. I think I accidentally sunburned her. I also don't know if I should cut off the ones that partial leaves .When I received her, she was laying flat, and a lot of her leafs were brown spots and chunks out of them. I always wanted a monstera and I love her.

Indoor Monstera can flower, you'll just need to keep a healthy plant for a very long time. With lots of light exposure. hopefully my plant flowers one day so I can make that video.
Question! How heinous was it that I (temporarily) tied the newest leaf (like mid petiole) to the pole so it could harden off without the shape being warped from contact with the other leaves? We had just switched the plant to a different window that didn't quite have enough room for the petioles to all move around at once but the window has better sun

I got my monstera a few years ago without any knowledge of the big green beast. I knew nothing about staking. Now, I think it's too late for that. It's healthy but has a heavy lean to one side. Oh, well. I love my beast anyway.
Lee Ive been watching your RUclips videos for a while now and my monstera has just thrived since I made some changes, thank you! I even have secondary fenestrations which Im very pleased with 🙂 I haven't tied my monstera to the stake at all though. The stem is sort of just leaning against the stake so it's propped up really securely. Ive had multiple new leaves which I make sure aren't squashed as they are emerging. Im hoping thats ok? 🤔

I think your aunt would prefer a Monstera borsigiana, they are so much easier to manipulate and she can have more then one on the pole too meaning it doesnt matter if she turns it around, usually recommended anyway every 90days or so.. And their smaller size will probably be more to her taste since she doesn't like how the stems sticks out and wants to tie them up.
Hii ive watched some of your old videos recently on how to propagate a monstera i did exactly what you said I sealed it with candle and put cinnamon but before all those steps, i had my monsteras for 1 hours in a case of water after i saw your videos i let them rest for 11 hours without any water then put cinnamon, sealed it up with a candle and then i put it on water its been 8 hours from then and i haven’t noticed something bad yet my concern is that i cut its aerial roots and now im a little worried that i did a big mistake

I got a question. You've probably already answered this million times, but when repotting and rinsing your roots to remove all your old soil, do you water your plant immediately after when you put it into its new soil and pot? Or do you wait a couple days?

I poke a hole in a bottle of water, slide it into the top of the pole and leave it til next week.. my pothos doesn't even have a pot, I just stuffed the roots into the bottom of the pole and closed it with a flap of mesh lol.. it gets a dunk in the bath when it's dry

Mine has two stems growing horizontally out of the pot. Would it be a good idea to seperate them into two pots with planks and tie their stems vertically to the planks? My worry is then the leaves would be “upside down”. Could the plant readjust to the new position by twisting the petioles?

Can you stake a fully mature large monstera? My husband loved plants and I'm really trying my best to take care of his many plants since his sudden passing. The monstera is very wide now & i have a feeling I should have staked it. He used to take it outside in the Summer and had just brought it back in when he passed October 2022. I've been bad and not fed it, only watered...I swear he had a chemistry set or something always testing, mixing, etc. I've never had a green thumb bit I'm trying. It's just overwhelming at times. Any advice on ability to "train" this monstera a little more upward and how and what to feed it would be so great.
I have a few videos on fertilizer, the most simple would be using slow release. I would have to see the plant, but you do have to be careful about snapping the stem on older or larger plants.

I've never tied my Monstera but my largest one recently started straying from its moss pole so I'll probably do it from now on. After a few years of observation, I think that I'll try growing them at an angle instead of directly upwards. The bottom cut of my largest specimen grew from not having a single leaf to pushing out two-feet long leaves in less than a year without any staking or moss pole and its stem is growing on a positive 35° tilt. Can't wait for summer so I can run a few experiments on my balcony, my apartment is filled with plants already!
@@KillThisPlant i I've in East Asia side(East Asian and Southeast Asia/Rice culture), Rice husk are everywhere and cheap, fully burnt rice husk, partially burnt, fermented rice husk and raw rice husk and coconut husk, peat and fiber are cheap or free/throw away. but for perlite and peat moss are little pricey and expensive(high quality). So it good or not? i used partial burnt rice husk(mixed burnt and raw) and cocopeat to my Alacosia collection(Ninja, Platinum, jacklyn macrorrhiza, amazonica, polly, silver dragon, Watsonia Sulawesi, Eliene, Melo, Stingray), it grow healthy and big, white using black soiled sometime my alacosia rotten or turn yellow

First, can we please submit your rendition of the flag to whatever branch of gov necessary to get your flag as the new flag BC dang that looked great! Second, my monstera has the standard coir pole, I placed it at the back and strapped it on as you suggested in 100 videos 🤣 so it's doing good it's upsizing and then... It decides too grow horizontal, I'm pretty sure I could put a level on that chonk and it would make the level proud... So now I'm looking at it like "how do I guide you? Should I chop you? I don't want to chop you and start again! I'm thinking what happened is it got close enough to the grow light that it stopped needing to reach up. It just put out a new leaf that isn't unfurled yet, but I'm thinking of lowering it down (it's on a stand about a foot off the ground) and seeing if that corrects it. The grow light is right above it. My reason for not wanting to cut it is I don't want ANOTHER monstera and I don't know any plant ppl in real life who would give it what it needs. Would love to know if you think lowering it may help to get it growing vertical again? I am going to need to pull it out of the pot and move it forward now BC of its antics. I don't want to upsize further as it's in a big 10 inch pot (bigger than the 10 inch grow pots from nurseries.) Thanks Lee!
My usual choice is when you run out of vertical space, chop with the largest leaves and start in a new pot. Once the new plant is established you can get rid of the old bottom part. Either give it away or compost it.
@@KillThisPlant that's the thing though I didn't run out of vertical space it just changed to growing like a hovering crawler 😂 I think it's only on its 11th leaf! If I do a chop and keep the horizontal chonk and plant it vertically will it be ok to bury the existing air roots or would those rot? It's got a ton that are established in the soil but could go in about 8 inches deeper!? I look at it everyday on the treadmill and wonder what to do 😂 also with the air roots looking like real roots in the soil, would it be ok to take a 4 leaf cutting? They're very close with the nodes in this spot and are the largest four leaves. I know normally you wouldn't take 4 leaves as a cutting but I should need to get a box cutter or something to try and get between the nodes! Thanks again Lee!
@@MarisaAndChew 4 leaves are kind of a lot. Do you think air layering might be a better option. Burning aerial roots can be fine provided you have the appropriate pot size and light levels. They can very easily rot if they stay wet for too long.
@@KillThisPlant hmmm I don't currently have a spot that's not an already long aireal root to air layer... This monstera is only 2 years old (was a 3 leaf TC baby when I got it March 2 years ago) and it's already got secondary and possibly 3rd fenestrations BC every air root goes straight down and grows into the soil. It was very cool to repot last year BC it had like 7 different root systems 🤣

I think a round pole is making it harder too. Once the plant starts to grow a bit sideways it will slip off the pole. If you have a flat plank of wood, it wont be as easy for the plant to sneak around the pole.
Myth: leaf production is from Dried sphagnum moss Fact: Dried sphagnum moss doesn’t provide enough nutrients to affect leaf production. Larger leaf production is from simply just securing the stem to an upright pole, stake, plank basically anything that makes the plant feel secure.

You can absolutely let it crawl, but unless you have a tropical outdoor space you’re going to run out of room very quickly.

Your sanity is more important than having the optimal growth of this plant. Do what you need to do. Your plant will be just fine.

Can you tie the stem, AND tie the petioles, to control the horizontal shape of the plant?? Also, I hear we should never rotate the pot. Is that true?

You should never repot a plant into dry soil. Water immediately after.

If you put moss where the roots meet the pole they'll grow in and nourish the new leaves to grow even larger
They can help the roots get more water, but my 90 year old aunt is not going to be spraying moss daily 😆.

The only way to get the bottom of your plant to fill out again is by adding more cuttings into your pot.

I've never tied my Monstera but my largest one recently started straying from its moss pole so I'll probably do it from now on. After a few years of observation, I think that I'll try growing them at an angle instead of directly upwards. The bottom cut of my largest specimen grew from not having a single leaf to pushing out two-feet long leaves in less than a year without any staking or moss pole and its stem is growing on a positive 35° tilt. Can't wait for summer so I can run a few experiments on my balcony, my apartment is filled with plants already!
Is a bamboo pole okay to use in a monstera?

probably. rice husk isn't really available in my area so i haven't had the opportunity to use it.
@@KillThisPlant i I've in East Asia side(East Asian and Southeast Asia/Rice culture), Rice husk are everywhere and cheap, fully burnt rice husk, partially burnt, fermented rice husk and raw rice husk and coconut husk, peat and fiber are cheap or free/throw away. but for perlite and peat moss are little pricey and expensive(high quality). So it good or not? i used partial burnt rice husk(mixed burnt and raw) and cocopeat to my Alacosia collection(Ninja, Platinum, jacklyn macrorrhiza, amazonica, polly, silver dragon, Watsonia Sulawesi, Eliene, Melo, Stingray), it grow healthy and big, white using black soiled sometime my alacosia rotten or turn yellow

Between 2-3 is usually the best choice!

Second, my monstera has the standard coir pole, I placed it at the back and strapped it on as you suggested in 100 videos 🤣 so it's doing good it's upsizing and then... It decides too grow horizontal, I'm pretty sure I could put a level on that chonk and it would make the level proud... So now I'm looking at it like "how do I guide you? Should I chop you? I don't want to chop you and start again!
I'm thinking what happened is it got close enough to the grow light that it stopped needing to reach up. It just put out a new leaf that isn't unfurled yet, but I'm thinking of lowering it down (it's on a stand about a foot off the ground) and seeing if that corrects it. The grow light is right above it.
My reason for not wanting to cut it is I don't want ANOTHER monstera and I don't know any plant ppl in real life who would give it what it needs.
Would love to know if you think lowering it may help to get it growing vertical again? I am going to need to pull it out of the pot and move it forward now BC of its antics. I don't want to upsize further as it's in a big 10 inch pot (bigger than the 10 inch grow pots from nurseries.)

My usual choice is when you run out of vertical space, chop with the largest leaves and start in a new pot.
Once the new plant is established you can get rid of the old bottom part. Either give it away or compost it.
@@KillThisPlant that's the thing though I didn't run out of vertical space it just changed to growing like a hovering crawler 😂 I think it's only on its 11th leaf!
If I do a chop and keep the horizontal chonk and plant it vertically will it be ok to bury the existing air roots or would those rot? It's got a ton that are established in the soil but could go in about 8 inches deeper!? I look at it everyday on the treadmill and wonder what to do 😂 also with the air roots looking like real roots in the soil, would it be ok to take a 4 leaf cutting? They're very close with the nodes in this spot and are the largest four leaves. I know normally you wouldn't take 4 leaves as a cutting but I should need to get a box cutter or something to try and get between the nodes! Thanks again Lee!

Burning aerial roots can be fine provided you have the appropriate pot size and light levels. They can very easily rot if they stay wet for too long.
@@KillThisPlant hmmm I don't currently have a spot that's not an already long aireal root to air layer... This monstera is only 2 years old (was a 3 leaf TC baby when I got it March 2 years ago) and it's already got secondary and possibly 3rd fenestrations BC every air root goes straight down and grows into the soil. It was very cool to repot last year BC it had like 7 different root systems 🤣

I think a round pole is making it harder too. Once the plant starts to grow a bit sideways it will slip off the pole. If you have a flat plank of wood, it wont be as easy for the plant to sneak around the pole.

Myth: leaf production is from Dried sphagnum moss Fact: Dried sphagnum moss doesn’t provide enough nutrients to affect leaf production. Larger leaf production is from simply just securing the stem to an upright pole, stake, plank basically anything that makes the plant feel secure.
