Clock Work Knight takes me back man. Pops worked 3rd shift and i only saw him on weekends when he'd play this and get past all the levels I couldn't. I thought the level design was so cool as a kid, it was incredible to me. God I miss my Saturn, what great times these were. Thanks for the dose of nostalgia.

Thats beautiful. I lost my dad this year and am now in the property I grew up in where I had many similar memories albeit it was actually me that was good at the games rather than him. I miss him and yes I miss my Saturn, in fact my whole collection! Thank god for emulation. Now weirdly I've gone through the mill a bit with family members makin my life difficult so in dark times I was suddenly recommended the song by tj Davis- time which appeared on metropolis street racer which I also used to love...
Please take me back... it was so much easier then.

@orderofmagnitude-TPATP Sorry for your loss man. I see the degradation of my parents' quality of life and I just cling to these memories and any new ones. Maybe I should get into emulation myself for that reason.

Sega should have released these as one long game, and remade the rest of their Saturn library on modern systems. It would see a lot of new interest in these games.
Also, there was supposed to be a Clockwork Knight game on the Gamecube, but it was cancelled.

    • @jasonleveck8546

I gotta believe there would be very significant interest in the Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast libraries. So many bad ass games. Keep everything that made them great and add a few things here and there with new tech. and it seems to me that they'd have huge sales #'s.

Funny thing is, Clockwork Knight did get a 2-in-1 release in Japan that added new minigames and a boss rush mode. And the U.S version of 2 was discovered to have all of the first game hidden behind a button code since it was based on the combo pack. So yes! If you have a copy of 2, you can actually play the whole series

  • @Unquestionable

This was one of those titles that defined the early Saturn for me. While the game play never seemed much different than what we had been getting the previous gen it was still visual impressive. I remember at the time it got pretty average reviews but given how the rest of the era has evolved it's surprisingly held up in my opinion.

I love this game so much! It's so whimsical and timeless! I don't think you could have made a game as special as this at any other point than the mid 90's. It's basically Castle of Illusion with the graphics of Donkey Kong Country and a catchy jazz soundtrack!
Also, I can't believe the entirety of CK1 was hidden on the CK2 disc this whole time!

Clockwork Knight brings back so many nostalgic memories, especially when I hear the music. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is about this game that keeps me coming back. I don't find it particularly fun these days, but I love booting it up. I guess it's because it takes me back to my youth.
As a bonus if you had waited for Clockwork Knight 2, you would have actually gotten both the first and second game by entering a code. Man I wish that had been discovered years ago.

You mentioned Toy Story and this video made me realize how wrong I was about this game. I assumed the game was made to capitalize on it. "Wait, if Clockwork Knight was a launch title, then it couldn't have been inspired by Toy Story." And sure enough, later on the video, you mention how Toy Story released a year after the Saturn's launch. Guess it was just a neat coincidence.

Also, "A Lullaby" is the most beautiful end theme in video games. Very relaxing, and very calming.

I rented Clockwork Night 1 and 2 and I thought they were great. I think they were underrated at the time because side scrolling performers were considered passé. It's probably more influential than it's given credit for too, as it showed how you could successfully integrate 3D elements into 2D gameplay, which is more commonplace now.

I picked both part one and two back in the day. Clockwork Knight 2 especially kept on adding things on subsequent play throughs: the title screen would change and update, I don't recall if this game did the same as some of the Nights releases, where they would change things depending on what day you played (ie Xmas, New Years etc...).
Had great memories with this franchise, it is a shame that Sega has not follow up or revisit it.

Fun fact about this game is that DMA mimicking the look of it is apparently what led to the gradual creation of the first Grand Theft Auto. Apparently at some point they realized that adding a floor turned the side on engine into top down.
At least that's what they claimed in a making of GTA from EDGE.

It really is a shame these stayed exclusive to the Saturn as I don't think (as far as I know) they were ever re-released (even on PC). Thank you so much for honoring an old request of mines a few years back regarding this short-lived Sega exclusive.
Like many of you, I discovered this game as a demo on the Bootleg Sampler disc included within the holiday promo of the Saturn in '96.
While not as technically intuitive as the other competing 3D platforms like Crash and Super Mario 64, I actually grew quite fond of this exclusive in compensation of having good and witty visual designs with simple to use mapped controls that made the game enjoyable.
Clockwork Knight's music felt it took some inspirations from SuperTramp which made me connect to it even more.
What I was NOT aware after over 25 years, that there was a lost cheat code in CK2 that unlocks the first game.
Once again, I express my gratitude to this channel. Thank you, Sega Lord X! 🕰

It's remarkable to me how closely Toy Story on the Genesis came to giving the same kind of 3d appearance as this game all the way over on the Saturn. This game could have been adapted to run on the Genesis without losing too many of the visual effects - though you'd lose sprite scaling of the layer system unless you made the concession of using the Sega 32X

It's a representation of that time, the transition to 3D didn'tt necessarily have to be polygonal, how many times was this game criticized for looking like "a Genesis game" come on, let the critics try to make a game this complete in Genesis haha, I even love the CGI, perfect for representing plastic toys, a shame that this saga only had 2 games, I hope one day at least Sega releases the Saturn mini including clockwork knight

I concur! A Saturn mini with the Clockwork Knight collection disc as one of the titles would be a treat.

A faithful remake for modern consoles would be great!

Clockwork Knight es una saga maravillosa. Jugué al 2, que tengo desde aquellos años, y la experiencia siempre me resultó genial. Y no ha envejecido para nada.

I think the second game would’ve been received much better if the cheat code was actually known at the time. Better yet it should’ve just included it without a cheat code

Good game, shame the series took a dark turn in the series with Clockwork Orange :p

Thanks for this video, great, well packaged and complete as usual 😊
Do you know if the cheat code for unlocking the first is in the PAL copy of CK2 too?? 😮😮😮

I'll probably save state through them at some point -- happen to own CK2 but don't feel like constantly dying and restarting.

Stylistically, it reminds me a bit of Dynamite Headdy. Interesting.

Sega seems to forget or plain ignore all their Saturn OG IPs it seems they want everyone to forget that they ever created that console cause all of the Saturn IPs are still stuck on Saturn

This is a series that looks best on a CRT TV (something I could say about a lot of Saturn games). Fun games, too.

I played both and enjoyed them. Also enjoyed bug 2. Second one of both are better to me. But all of them are awesome

I recall once seeing a copy of CWK 2 crumple and fall apart like a Ritz cracker, while in a fit of rage. 🤣
