When I first moved to NYC I had been away from the region for a couple of years in Pittsburgh where everything is kind of in its own zone and sub-neighborhood. So on my first day of work I asked my new colleagues 'Where are the food places around here?' because in Pittsburgh everything was grouped together. My lovely colleague leaned over conspiratorially and in a stage whisper heard by everyone she said simply, "Outside, dear. We keep our restaurants and food carts outside here."
I still laugh at that because I grew up in the NYC suburbs and commuted to work here for over a decade, I just had been in Pittsburgh mode. And yes, she's absolutely right. When you want to find great food options, just go outside and wander a bit. You'll find several, day or night.

Getting one from a random street cart is something I crave on a regular basis. If you're still in the city, you guys should head down to Brighton Beach aka Little Odessa. It's an area full of Russian Jewish immigrants and the food there is just amazing. I've always lived in areas that have a large Jewish population. Though I'm not Jewish myself, Jewish cuisine is always my go to for some of the best comfort food. Whenever I'm sick, I head to the kosher deli up the road for soup, stuffed cabbage, stuffed derma, and tons of other delicious 'warm you from the inside out' food.

I’ve heard of a couple of street food places in New York. One is called the big gay ice cream truck (I’m not kidding it exists) and the papusa lady in queens. I’ve also heard that red hook in Brooklyn is a good spot by the soccer fields. The street food tends to vary from neighborhood to neighborhood. Flushing has a lot of street eats based around classic Chinese food not usually available in the states. Red hook is mostly Latin with Caribbean sometimes. It’s not all hot dogs, falafel, and pretzels. Try the Chinatown ice cream factory too. You also may like tasty noodle in Chinatown where the angle is. That whole angle was painted with murals and stuff to honor Chinatown’s past including Corky Lee who helped photograph most of what Chinatown was. Chinatown has a rough history but it’s a lot better now at least in some places.

I ordered Levain cookies at the height of the pandemic because it was one of the few places shipping. I thought their cookies are overly sweet and I've had cookies with an even better texture elsewhere. I'd prefer the Levain chocolate chip cookie if they used dark chocolate, less sugar, and if it was slightly more chewy in the center. Think they're wildly overrated. The Sabrett hot dog is amazing I agree. It's a true NY classic. The Halal food is sublime. I think the white sauce really sets it off. I don't know if it's yogurt on top. One Halal guy told me it was mayonnaise made more liquidy by adding vinegar. But I can't say that's universal. I don't know. I do like this channel. Good personalities. Good job.

New to your channel and now I'm binge watching 😂 I watched you eat hot dogs in Chicago and as a New Yorker I was dying to see if you tried one in New York. I must know which style you enjoy the most, Chicago or New York? If you return, you must go to Gray's Papaya you can still get a hot dog for $1. Try their fruit juices and a hot dog with the onion sauce, sauerkraut, and spicy mustard. Or go to Coney Island or Nathan's for a good hot dog.

We have been getting immigrants from everywhere that bring their food in. It’s quite a nice mix. We also have our own Florida native cuisine that is getting great reviews. We even have one star restaurants on the guide down here. Things have changed from theme park food to really good food that you can’t miss.

Halal actually has a brick and mortar now though I’m not sure where but I do know it’s in manhattan. Same food just different setting. That cart has never left that corner by Rockefeller for eons and is there night and day. It’s what cabbies eat on breaks to fuel up and get people back on the road. Actually there’s a secret trick if you spot the line for halal simply use the other side as it’s reserved for cabbies and nobody cares. It’s a trick that nobody uses because they don’t know about it. That side is always empty anyway.
