If they made this phone support PSP and PS2 games it would have been huge. But no, people just don't like nice things and you end up with this mediocre phone that lets you run "some" of the PS1 games. Nice work Sony.
You can get a PS1 emulator and a PSP emulator, as well as many others such as GBA, Wii, DS, and more. Considering this phone is 3 YEARS + old, then I'd say its better than mediocre, for its day.
+ConnorTheNative is there a way to modify the D pad to be more normalized/connected ? I never could stand those button the pads, otherwise I hear this thing is perfect! UGGh!
I am considering this phone, but jumping to this phone from an iphone, is it worth it? Along with playing a lot of games I like twitter and facebook and internet browsing, is all that good?
Have owned one since August 2012. No matter how you manage it, this phone is Constantly 'Low On Space'. Has 512 ram. A 16GB SD card is good, but Google seems to automatically take space back that you just cleared in App manager. A real novelty, sure. A good phone- yes. A game system? No. New Android phones running Snapdragon 801 and with the availability of Moga or other controller makes the old Xperia Play a thing of the past, but it is Very enjoyable in many ways, good screen. Very durable design
Awsome Robloxian no... Buy something a little more modern. Theres a lot of phones today that are good for being on a budget. As a natter of fact, some of the best phones start at $200.
+Awsome Robloxian. It's been some time since I've used this phone. Unless you have some reason to buy it or just can't afford anything better or more modern like the galaxy s4 for $50 or less then feel free to drive yourself madd with the Xperia Play. I now own a G3 and nothing compares. The Xperia Play was my first android phone and in 2012 I thought it was cool, two years later I just can't recommend it since there are better options, and even a freebie these days has 16Gb ram standard and at least a Snapdragon 600 (S4). The gamepad is really the only viable attraction. The Xperia play is Tanked by being unable to grow. Modern Combat 4 for instance. Compatible yes, can you install it? No. Insufficient storage. Can't use SD slot unless app is already installed. The larger the file, the unlikely fact is you can't install it on Xperia Play. There are just too many better options in 2014.
link2SD should take care of the problem with "low on space". I still think this is the greatest phone ever made, but would I have liked a built in gamepad on a phone with better specs... yes, yes I would. I hope Project ARA will deliver an accessory kind of like this, but until then I'll stick with the PLAY. :)
Definitely get it. I just got mine the other day from a friend. Its about a year and a half old but it has held up very nicely. My only complaint would be that its only a Snapdragon CPU and not a gaming optimized Tegra, but it can still hold its own.
@2thumbvids Personally, I find it annoying to use controls on a touch screen, and having to move the phone to turn during racing games kills it for me, so hard to stay in control. Which is why I love this phone and the game pad. Best gaming phone right now IMO
I am very interested in purchasing this phone...my only question: I've had a lot of smart phones that will not let me save ringtones sent to me in messages and use them. Is this one of those pains in the butt? Because I'd really like free range with pics & tones.
Today one of my mates told me that the phone is slow. Is it? Is there any problems with this phone? If so what are the problems. I think it looks great though
Just bought it yesterday and was the first person at the store to purchase it in my town. it's a great phone and the gaming on it is amazing. So slick and smooth its awesome. Great graphics and although it runs a little hot it's very fun to play.
It took about 2 years for mine to mess up, but i found out it was a rare issue that happens to a lot of people with cell phones. For some reason, no one could hear me speak but I could hear them. Using speech-to-text was NOT a problem because it could clearly understand me.
I have a question for you:I want to by this phone because i think its awsome and i showed this video to my friend and he said that this phone is bad because you can break the slide gaming pad if you use it too much and i was wondering can that really happen and what do you think about this phone?:)
***** I had the phone for 2 years I dropped it a shit ton and very hard and only ended up with 3 scratches on the screen, so it was a beast. It played pretty much every game on the play store. The only problem is at one point the task manager would only let certain apps be open for 30 seconds and it was like that for a month for some reason and before and after that apps really weren't open for very long as the task manager was constantly closing apps. Then the battery would only last 50-60 mins of minecraft and just going on the internet it would last 3 hours, so the battery was lacking a bit. Overall I would not recommend it as for the first year it was fine but after that it just became a shitty experience.
This phone is pretty bad compared to newer phones if I were you I would get a z1 compact and a bluetooth controller. I've owned this phone for 2 years and I would not recommend it.
The best thing about this device are the emulators, that alone saves it from being a catastrophe. I've got emulators for psone, n64, gbc, gba, nes, snes, genesis, neo geo, the list goes on.
Eduardo Luna They do. Nowadays I use it rarely if I wanna play something old (mainly gba games). For a handheld emulator it gets the job done. For anything else, not really.
I'm very happy! I bought my Xperia Play December 2012 and until now it has been excellent in every way. Has a phone, with Gingerbread, it's nice. But the most amazing is the game interface with the gamepad. If you spend a lot of time playing with your phone, Xperia Play is the master of then all. Just brilliant.
@coalminedipper if the auto tilt is on, it will automatically go landscape if horizontal. It will go horizontal if the game pad is slid out, if not on your home screen (on home screen it will open Xperia play app). It is the same size, if not bigger than an iPhone.
@1622 matt xperia play definately.Galaxy ace is a good phone, but it doesnt have the gamepad so isnt as good.plus it has a smaller screen. You can get the ace for £130 and The xperia play for £180 from amazon so its quite a bit more expensive but its worth it if u ask me.
Just bought this badboy... I had read alot of reviews before hand - some of them offputting. Lets start by saying, I am glad I didn't listen to them and bought this. Screen brightness is fine - I have it on 3/4 setting and it is still very bright. The auto brightness feature is turned off on any new devices running gingerbread 2..4 ...Very happy with the display and feel of phone. Resolution on web not as good as alot of phones today but still gets job done 100%
I work in a mobile phone store, its a good phone no doubt but you can get a htc hd for the same price which is a more reliable phone, but no doubt the built in game controller is cool. Thinking of getting it tomorrow as I'm due a contract upgrade. Its going to be this or a htc hd, still not sure :/
i mostly wanted a phone for textin and phone calls but this phone makes me want to get it for all its features...also, does the phone look good in black or white?
im going to get this phone. for the internet access, is it wi-fi or do i need to pay for internet? If i have to pay, do I have a choice for internet or not?
WOW, you are fucking amazing... You were kicking ass in the last game and AT THE SAME TIME you were giving us compelling information about the PLAY... Most reviewers when saying something and playing, for instance, a racing game, they all crash like crazy... but your are a multitasking deity !
@airtwaine The NGP isn't out at the moment. You are planning to buy a new handheld gaming device. The two most recent devices are the 3DS, a console with a 3D gimmick or the Xperia Play, a console that's also a phone.... they're DIRECTLY competing. All it 'being a phone' does is add another feature to a portable games console meaning the gamer now doesn't need to take two devices with them when they do out. Non-gamers looking to buy a phone will not consider the Xperia Play. Think about it.
Yeah but the only problem with this kind of phone is that you can't play certain headphones into it. I have used it before and for some reason beats headphones will not work with it.
Honestly I'm on the same fence with you except I'm considering the Droid Incredible 2 as well. The thing that I'm almost dismissing the charge completely for is that the Charge has extremely poor battery life hence the name. (; But honestly to keep a daily charge is important to me. and I'm afraid the Sony might be too bulky and too focused on just gaming then the phone aspect.
so i noticed a lot of people asking if it will play gba or ps1 games on it, since its an android there are tons of emulators for a bunch of systems and all you have to do is map the buttons to them. basically you can play hundreds of games outside of sony's lineup for free as well which is just too sick!
Honestly, it looks cool. I have one. I've had it for about five months now, and ever since it's been crashing randomly. I've gotten three different xperia plays due to this problem, and it still tends to crash. It may look cool, but I wouldn't recommend it
I got this phone in the past year's christmas still can't forget this phone :) The problem is that the screen scratches a lot and the hardware is outdated
Can the virtual keyboard be displayed in portrait mode, by turning the phone sideways?, or does it just have the virtual keyboard only in the upright position?.
I had this phone and sold it recently. IMO It was already outdated under the hood when compared to duel core giants like the SGS2, HTC Sensation, LG Optimus 3D etc. It is a very buggy phone and freezes a lot!! The control pad is awesome however what makes it great is the emulators (Ocarina of Time anybody!) If you're planning on getting one now I would honestly suggest against it as it's a duel core world out there now. The next one needs to be duel core with a more intuitive UI and better cam
I really need to know if I can download & play only xperia play optimized games?Or I can play any other game that fits the requierments?I really need to know because I'm really interested. :).Thanks! PS:Sorry for my english.

They really should make another one.
They wont They're more focused on ps4 to z3 remoteplay and making it a gaming masterpiece
OBS GAMING And that's why i ditched the play and got a Z3
Obious Alias I NEED ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obious Alias yas they need new one i would buy it right now
Yes, this phone looks soooo good😍😍😍
I wanted that phone so bad when it was released
me too BRUHHH its so nice

***** I think you're looking for the Nvidea Shield :)
***** Great idea but its toooo costly.. heck Vita is too costly and is a deemed a fail.
Mineshack Nivdia shield is a tank.. why not just buy a gaming laptop? that thing is a stupid piece of tech.

A PSP GO with gsm, 3G, 5mp camera, multi touch display and android! \m/
This is the only video that i have found that actually has the full review of the phone instead of some guy just talking about the games.
do you have this phone and what do you think about it should i buy it?
Is this a good phone ?
Should i buy this or Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc ?
please answer me :)
@2thumbvids Personally, I find it annoying to use controls on a touch screen, and having to move the phone to turn during racing games kills it for me, so hard to stay in control. Which is why I love this phone and the game pad. Best gaming phone right now IMO
Need to get this, €450 dropped to €179, happy Days!

Trusteft Yes you can
Alex B Thank you.
I also just ordered it. Ill be getting it in the morning. CANT WAIT!!!!!!!
So do i get this phone or not?
Is it worth selling my new galaxy S3 mini?
My major concern is that the apps on this arent very good. Are they as good as other devices?
is it worth it getting it ?
I'm a hardcore gamer. Should I get this or the galaxy s 3 mini?
@miiiikeh Thank you! One more question Neo or Arc? Because Neo seams better and cheaper, Arc is just a little bit bigger.
It took about 2 years for mine to mess up, but i found out it was a rare issue that happens to a lot of people with cell phones. For some reason, no one could hear me speak but I could hear them. Using speech-to-text was NOT a problem because it could clearly understand me.
you can convert your old PSONE games to install into the phone, videos play smoothly up to 720p, 1080p is very sluggish.
I have a question for you:I want to by this phone because i think its awsome and i showed this video to my friend and he said that this phone is bad because you can break the slide gaming pad if you use it too much and i was wondering can that really happen and what do you think about this phone?:)

@ventut
Cant compare them, but I would still want the xperia more.
It's like a PSP Go with phone options and android..
i mostly wanted a phone for textin and phone calls but this phone makes me want to get it for all its features...also, does the phone look good in black or white?
Great review!Are you French?
What should I get? A Google Nexus 7 or this?
One was released very recently and this one also works with the Xperia Play.
im going to get this phone. for the internet access, is it wi-fi or do i need to pay for internet? If i have to pay, do I have a choice for internet or not?
@MsMrn444 was it worth it? i might it get next week?
there will be no official ICS release for play...but you can search for XDark ROM..its a custom rom but it works perfectly...

Can you choose from different launchers? I have noticed from other videos a different Sony default launcher, other than the Android launcher.
@L96p5K because it freezes like every 2 hours then u need to pop the battery out then it takes like 10 minutes to boot back up
xperia play , xperia arc, xperia ray or optimus 3d ? what should I get ? Advice pls
Can you play games for example Angry Birds without using the Dpad, and can you download any game not just games optimized for the Xperia play
@catsloverish it depends...whether you want a phone for music or a phone for gaming, it's based on your personal preference

To bad they didn't try to expand on this phone it was a really good idea especially its size.
UltimaCheese still a good pjhone and unique..some news we are developing a 3xx kernel to support android kitkat roms for xperia play.:)

Can the virtual keyboard be displayed in portrait mode, by turning the phone sideways?, or does it just have the virtual keyboard only in the upright position?.
should i get this or the iphone 4
Just bought this a few hours ago, and now watch this review with this phone. Yayy!!
@MrHazzinator, yeah it does, iOS still has plenty of apps that Android doesn't have, it just depends what your requirements are.
Are you in the UK so you have the iplayer app?
But will it blend?
I had this phone and sold it recently. IMO It was already outdated under the hood when compared to duel core giants like the SGS2, HTC Sensation, LG Optimus 3D etc. It is a very buggy phone and freezes a lot!! Looking at the Xperia Play's display makes me sooooo happy for the display in my Xperia arc.
Do you have to pay for the data plan?
I really need to know if I can download & play only xperia play optimized games?Or I can play any other game that fits the requierments?I really need to know because I'm really interested. :).Thanks!
PS:Sorry for my english.
i just ordered this phone from verizon. looks awesome cant wait till it arrives!!!
@Onetreevids u can use the screen as u would on any other phone
@KingRage26 thnx. so how would you rate each phone outof 10
What phone is better for gamers the xperia play or the htc trophy
How is the battery?
people are putting in their reviews that it is "heavy" is it actually?
will it blend?
I Did update to highest version and its still Non-responsive, But I realise that its kind-of faulty & I have a warranty so I'm going to return it and hopefully it can get properly repaired or replaced. Just one question can you store All applications and files On the phone memory into your SD (I have already manage to switch all Downloaded apps and files onto SD But how about the apps and files that come with the phone and is there an option that every time you download it can be stored into SD)
What size is the battery (mah) in that phone and what carriers will be available for?
Is this a good phone?
I think the sim free version was made extremly expensive to get everyone on contracts. Because sony had a deal with the mobile network companies
Can you download movies and TV shows in the PlayStation store on the xperia play? Is the PlayStation store the same as the PSP store?
