- Throughout NASCAR history there have been some great drivers who have never won it all. One of these greats is Carl Edwards. In his career Edwards had the opportunity to win it all in 2008, 2011, and of course 2016. This is the story of Carl Edwards' last great shot at winning it all.

That was the saddest end to a career in NASCAR history. I was pulling for Carl that day, I was destroyed,
Same here
Rowdy Smoke14 I was really upset when he crashed. He was always a guy if my favorite driver was out of it I could root for
I think people dying was a little sadder but it definitely wasn’t a good ending.
Yea i remember any time Harvick wasnt in the position i was rooting for Carl, sad how his career ended, tragic.
Same I was 11 at the time I cried that night
Even as a jimmie johnson fan, i felt bad for carl, and it's sucks that he retired after the 2016 season, i still miss him racing
And even though i was happy to see jj win his 7th championship, i really wanted to see carl win his first championship
Jj and the horseshit system forced him into retirement he got sick of being fucked over........
I feel like I’m his biggest fan Carl we miss you
Js Shaw sane 😭😭
PS1 NASCAR games have no Chase format
This was brutal. Right up there with Mark Martin.
Denny Hamlins past them both now
Carl Edwards was one of my favorite drivers. Its crazy to think if luck wouldve went his way he could’ve been a 3 time champion.
Same here, Danica Patrick could have been a 10 time champion if all the drivers crashed out very race.
@@wecf1411 😂
@@wecf1411 i almost choked on my soda reading that
Yessssssssssss Carl Nation!
I got to meet him at Richmond. He is a really down to earth person.
Carl was so fed up with these loses he retired.
NASCAR doesn't deserve a driver with the caliber of Carl after all the shit they've screwed him out of.
What In Carnation? It wasnt necessarily nascar. Arris all but showed they shoved Carl out for Daniel
IanNation48 As I’ve said before, drivers Race different under different formats. Johnson probably still would’ve won in 2008. 2011 would probably be Edwards regardless, but in 2016 he wasn’t a championship caliber driver.
Carl didn’t retire because he was fed up. He was forced out of that ride.
Another overlooked reason was one Carl cited in his retirement announcement: his health. His career is often defined by these harsh wrecks (this one at Homestead, his hard wreck at Dover, the blow-over years ago at Talladega, etc etc.) He took a lot of knocks, and he had probably had enough of that too.
He was paid millions to give up that ride to Suarez.
I was happy to see Jimmie win his 7th Championship But at the same time I felt devastated for Carl because I wanted to see him finally win that elusive 1st Cup title and I truly believe that if it that caution never flew for Dylan Lupton, Carl would have won the Championship in 2016 and It sucks not seeing Carl Edwards on track because he was a great driver and a class act
Same. Yes I am a 48 fan but Carl deserves that 2016 cup
Dylan freaking Lupton......
Hearing those what ifs at the end of the video felt like knives being stabbed through my chest, because they're all true..I really wanted him to win it all, and sadly it wasn't meant to be
Edwards got screwed out of so many championships
No he screwed himself
@@joshlampman8717 yep
I CALLED IT! But here are my thoughts. I actually didn’t watch this race, but I still think it’s sad that Carl lost the championship simply because he crashed with only a handful of laps to go, no doubt a result of NASCAR’s “playoff” format. I’m not only against the current format, but I’m also against the Chase all together, because in my opinion, it sometimes doesn’t crown a true champion. Therefore, Carl Edwards is a 2-time champion to me, having won it in 2008 and 2011. But because he never won a championship, Carl is one of the most underrated drivers of this century. Plus, I do agree that his 2016 loss was a factor in him leaving the sport almost 2 months later.
Also, Missing Rings: Sterling Marlin 2002
I agree mostly. My feeling is that NASCAR died the same year they started the "Chase" and got rid of the old points system. Stages and guaranteed cautions may have sounded good to the people in charge, but they killed their fan base in my opinion and turned it into a game show. Declining ratings and viewers can't ALL be wrong. May be just me, but imho there hasn't been a real champion since they changed everything (Just my .002...lol)
indeed, you could lead every lap of every race up to the very last lap and still not win the championship because of one moment. also before someone mentions team sports there is not 4 guys going for one win in the championship game and there are not up to 36 other teams on the field that could impact the outcome of those going for the championship. This is why I am against the chase format.
True what people forget is based on just total points, Carl is a 3 time Champion. so if you compare it to those drivers pre-chase that changes things "BigTIme"
The guy who was screwed out of a title the most in the post chase era was Jeff Gordon
Second?
Carl Edwards
The Sock Puppet Guy actually Harvick would have had a few too. I know he ended up winning one but still. Edwards is in the conversation for best that never won a title imo
Yet Brad won a title before he even got good
@@DumpedClutch Yeah, Harvick should be a 3-time champ. (Possibly 4-time, depending on how you feel about his 2018 season.)
@@frederickschulze8014 Thing is, though, Brad won the 2012 title Chase or no Chase. The Chase would've actually screwed Brad out of the 2012 championship had it not been for Jimmie Johnson's bad luck the final 2 weeks.
@@rcracer8872 What ripped him off in 2004 was bad luck. I believe that had it not been for his injury and for the 2 DNF's he had in the Chase, Jr. could've been the first Nextel Cup champion. In 2013, he would've won under the elimination style Chase Grid.
Carl Edwards is, after five seasons under this format, the only Championship 4 driver to not finish the championship race
Still the only Championship 4 driver to not finish the race I believe.
Now you can add Christopher Bell to that list
He hit the "Thank You Sprint" banner on the wall @11:49 , The sprint logo is gone and all I saw was Carl saying Thank you
Missed the fact that the caution that came out with 16 to go was COMPLETELY unwarranted. Dylan Lupton had a tire go down and there was no debris, no spin, out of the race line, and enough power to bring it to pits clean. That was the most frustrating part for me.
Jeff, Mark and Carl all had their fair share of heartbreak.
I wasn't even an Edwards fan but that crash was both emotionally and physically painful. He worked so hard for that title.
Carl was my childhood hero. It breaks my heart to see Carl come up short in 08,11,and in 16. I wish he won the Championship...
Thank you for making this video definitely my favorite of yours. I was a huge Carl Edwards fan every since I was a kid and he was the only guy I would root for every week. I remember attending the 2016 homstead race thrilled to see Carl Edwards compete. I had never been more exciting during a championship race every lap seeing Carl Edwards lead the final 4 was incredible. I thought he had in it the bag but that bs caution came out. I’ll never forget on that restart how mad I was when he crashed. I was upset for a bit but then I thought “He’ll win next year” But there was no next year and when he announced his retirement my heart sank like the titanic. I wish I could’ve seen my idol win one championship but I’ve grown to appreciate his career and the class act he is. It isn’t the same without you Carl - Thank you
:{
We've waited so many days, weeks, and years to come by only to know that Carl Edwards, our favorite driver never got his first championship before he retired. Very sad. God bless Carl
Championships Carl competed for: 3
Championships Carl deserved: 2
Championships Carl earned: 2
Championships Carl Got: 0
Talk about corruption of the playoffs.
Tony Stewart got him fair and square in 2011
GN that was before he went on an absolute 10 races tear so he definitely earned it
@@allprosportz686 Smoke's Career went on a Downward Spiral after 2011

Missing rings: Matt Kenseth, 2013
Missing rings: Christopher Bell, 2018
Haha
I would add Brad Keselowski, 2014, regardless of the drama with Kenseth and at Texas. Btw, you made a good point there.
Or Jr. 2004
I think he did a video on that already.
@@HughWanztino To be honest, Johnson and Keselowski were both equally dominant from what I saw that year, but I do agree with what you said and I'll respect your opinion.
You should do missing rings Matt kenseth 2013
I Like Jimmie but Matt put up a Good Fight against JJ48
This defeated me more than Gordon retiring. Great video dude. I'd be lying if I said I didn't shed a tear during this video.
I am a HUGE Jimmie Johnson fan but I fell very bad for Carl Edwards because he chould have won the championship that year if he haven't wrecked. I was rooting for him to win the championship in 2016 just in case if Jimmie didn't win the championship. As we about to restart with Carl in the lead then he tired to bock Logano and ending up causing a big wreck I was both happy, sad, and mad at the same time. Happy because that wreck give Jimmie another chance to win his 7th championship and it worked out for him. Sad and Mad because Carl wrecked trying to block and I felt so bad for Carl.
I was the exact inverse of who I was rooting for in that race.
When I started to become a serious racing fan, I was a huge fan of Carl.
I don't know why, but this missing rings video hurts so much more than 2008 and 2011..
because the fact that was his last chance, and his last restart that ended like it did
It’s about time!! Carl Edwards should have won that championship
😔 i miss Carl
As a Jimmie Johnson fan I still felt bad Edward's did win the championship that year. Yes I was Happy when Johnson won his 7th but when Edwards didnt come back the next season it was like oh....
I really miss Carl, I miss this Aflac #99 car, my favourite number in Sprint Cup, Edwards always is my favourite Nascar driver
This one still hurts. I was rooting for Carl that year. Also, I think that the 2016 season is underrated.
Posted this your 2011 one for Carl I figured a copy and paste would suffice.
Carls missing rings season stats:
2008: 9 wins, 19 top 5s, 27 top 10s, 1282 laps lead, 9.5 avg finish
2011: 1 win, 19 top 5s, 26 top 10s, 903 laps lead, 9.3 avg finish
2016: 3 wins, 9 top 5s, 18 top 10s, 918 laps lead, 13.9 avg finish.
While I do believe Carls words at his retirement speech (others don't but that doesn't surprise me). I also do believe that Arris forced him out for Danial Suarez. The last restart of his career is something that i'm pretty sure Carl would have done it too Joey if roles were reversed. Carl went out with class, he has also had classless moments in his career.
I am glad he is keeping busy in his retirement but I don't miss him.
he only had classy moments bruh
"What happens when you don't know its the end?" Perfectly describes NASCAR after the 2001 Daytona 500

NASCAR misses Carl Edwards…not even trying to take a shot at NASCAR, just how awesome and classy Carl was
I respect Edwards the way he raced. He was an example why NASCAR should scrap the format we are stuck with now a days and not destroyed effort that teams gathered the whole season. I truly miss him and his back flips. Dont know if he even considers to go back racing.
Thank you it was 2016 when the Dega JGR debacle happened. Boy I can’t wait for 2020 when over a 3rd of the field does the same in the 2nd Daytona race yippie
I have been a Johnson fan from day one, but this truly had me in tears for Edwards. A true sportsman of the sport.
It was sad to see one of the most kind drivers retired , the way he handled that post crash was amazing and inspiring , one of the greatest role models of all time
It may have been a rain shortened race but I’m proud to say I was at Carl Edwards last career win at Texas.
Im not gonna lie my favorite driver ever i dont even watch nascar since he left and the ending of this video made me tear up like i did during the Homestead race
I don’t watch nascar anymore either Ever since he left I just cant find a driver to support that I would like anywhere close to how much I liked watching him
@@colingarcia7901 I found a liking for blaney ever since his roval win
Cousin Carl , Fearless competitor , fantastic wheelman , Shame he didnt get a good restart , he also had a stellar 2008 season where he didnt win the cup
Carl Edwards is a class act. It would have been cool to see him get a championship. He drove his butt off. Even thought he wasn't my driver, he was still someone I have always respected and thought he would for sure be a champ one day.
I don't know why I watch these things knowing I'm going to be sad after lol. Great video 👌 I don't think there's been a guy who has deserved a cup more than this guy, great driver and best sportsmanship of anyone out there

Still hurtss today like it did that exact day. I have always hated those other 3 drivers carl was my only hope and ive been a carl fan since 2008. Great driver and i miss him on the track.
And that was the last race of my favorite racer. My home state racer Carl Edwards. Haven’t followed nascar as much since.
I feel you, were in the same boat
Man, some of the videos in this series are amongst my favorites on RUclips. You do a fantastic job with them, brought a tear back to my eye with the Carl Edwards story. Great job
Had been a fan of his since he won at Atlanta in 2005. It still hurts to watch this.
I now respect Carl even more than i did. Sad to see him go.
We miss you Carl! I hope the rumors of Carl coming back are true.
iiColeCuster me too
I thought those were just April Fools' jokes.
iicolecuster. What rumors? I haven't heard any of this???
He should've deserved that championship and stayed in NASCAR
Carl you have class. Truly missed!
I remember watching the final race live... that was one of the saddest endings ever... almost an entire year of working hard just to lose it ALL in one mistake...
Damn. Chills. That’s so sad. I always wondered what happened to Carl d it’s so sad to see and learn that THIS is how he went out.
Man that hurt to see that happen to Carl. He was a great driver and an awesome guy. Now I have a little speculation. DW is retiring from the Fox booth. I wonder if we may see Carl again....
I miss Carl! He’s a champion in my book!

The Big Three 2018
My last favorite racer. Don’t have anymore, last I watched nascar regularly since. Guess his family just didn’t have enough money for nascar ... Goodbye nascar . Rest In Peace!!
As A Carl fan this one hurt me badly. I have even met him in real life he is a real nice guy.
Could definitely do a missing ring for byron this same season in trucks. Won several races until a blown motor at Phoenix in the fall kept him out of the final 4. I was at that race and as soon as we heard his motor going flat switch our radios to his channel and he couldn't have been more humble doing nothing but thank his team for their hard work after knowing his championship was done. Dont forget too he went on the win homestead in the final race.
Not just 2016. 2008, he had 8 top 5s in the chase. The wreck at Talladega and mechanical issue at Charlotte doomed him. Then we all know how 2011 went.
Carl Edwards is a class act a true racer
@10:43 I lost it, best thing I've ever witnessed in racing. Fuck Carl.
During that interview, Carl later said something along the lines of "we'll try again next season". So the decision to retire was made very quickly.
1 thing that i thought of while watching this was. Ever since Carl left nascar the 19 car has not won a race once. Suarez didn't win. Truex hasn'r won yet. its almost like the nascar gods put a curse on that car ever since Carl left.
You should do a what if Aj Allmendinger doesn't get suspended. Where would Joey have gone or would he have stayed at JGR?
Luke Strayer that would be a cool
Video
Consider it done Luke. That is one that I hadn't thought of. Keep an eye out over the coming week.
These make me wanna cry
What’s Carl doing today? In my opinion the best athlete in nascar. And surly a high class driver. Wish he had stayed driving he had a huge fan base that misses him.
Carl winning of competing for a championship may have saved nascar. Miss that guy.
After Jeff left, I was rooting for Carl. Watching this again almost makes me sick to my stomach.

I have the worst luck with my favorite athletes in different sports. Favre had that heartbreaking interception in 2009 in his last playoff run. The Brewers and Bucks haven't reached a World Series and Finals in decades. And Carl Edwards, in his likely final career race, wrecked out with 10 to go. I've encountered so much heartbreak and failure in sports, I hope that some day I might be victorious, that my Vikings, Brewers, Bucks could win it all some day. But I will never see Carl Edwards win a NASCAR Cup Series championship.

GREAT VIDEO MAN!
I grew up surrounded by Nascar and my first driver was Carl Edwards! And I was extremely upset about this....... And then he retired and i didn't think there would be another driver I'd want to pull for..... But then I saw someone special in that field, the #24 Chase Elliott, and he's been my driver since! #Di9 #PleaseComeBackEdwards
As a huge jj fan when I saw Edwards wreck I knew jj was gonna win. I was sad about Edwards but ecstatic knowing Jimmie would get his 7th
i was at that texas race, i will never forget it.
Thought seeing him go to their pit box afterwards was one of the coolest things ever.
Pissed Carl Edwards off so much, the man retired!
It’s sad
Carl was a class act all the way through his career.
Jimmy Johnson earned 6 titles and was gifted this one!!
Had that wreck not happened, Edwards would probably still be racing, even if he lost it on points safely running at the finish.
Still pissed that if joey was gonna run him down and end up wrecking someone he should have won the championship
alexk4219 actually Joey was the one that got ran down it’s no ones fault just a racing accident
It was Edward's fault not Joey's, shouldn't of tried running someone into the inside wall. Pays to play.
@@blueridgeboy6791 Edwards wasn't trying to run him to the inside wall dumbass. He was blocking.
Once again, the Chase/Playoffs screw another driver. Edwards didn't deserve it in 2016 but he sure as hell deserved it in 2008 and 2011.
As a former Carl Edwards fan this is painful and it makes me sick. At least he had sportsmanship to the 22, I would have probably started a riot somewhere.
Now, Carl was leading when they threw what many call the phantom yellow. But he also only made the Final 4 because of rain. At Texas, the race ended early due to rain. Though he was leading because of a good stop, so they did earn their win.
