Everyone was waiting to see Hercules's reaction to being shown up. He could have thrown a hissy fit about "that's not how you throw a discus," or mocked Hylas for having to compensate for relative physical weakness. Instead, Hercules readily admitted he'd been bested, and moreover, *rejoiced* in meeting a kind of excellence he didn't possess and wasn't expecting. He leads the men in a cheer and embraces Hylas as a brother. Hylas showed courage by challenging a demigod, and Hercules showed grace by lauding his new rival. The "non-toxic masculinity" shown by both characters in this scene (and throughout the film) is an example for us all.
I mean, to be fair, it's Herakles we're talking about so everyone would be right to be nervous about what his reaction might be, seeing as it would have been a coin toss between "I respect this man for his cleverness" and "I will murder everyone here"

@Michael 92: Unfortunately I didn’t see this or any that you mentioned in the cinema when they first came out. A few I did much later. Mostly on t.v. Absolutely…he looks in fine athletic shape here, and the actor, Nigel Green imbued him with a humanity as well as godly arrogance that made the role memorable But compared to the more muscular interpretations like Lou Ferrigno, he does look a bit undeveloped.
Considering people in those times ate less than we do, lived a physically tougher lifestyle, and didn’t have access to modern PEDs or steroids, it makes sense that they would be leaner than modern humans. It’s hard to be huge when you’re burning like 4,000 calories a day a live a clean lifestyle.
@@tombstoneharrystudios584 Agreed, AFAIK the "fashion" for being physically strong back then, and possibly for most of history, was based more on the image of the functionally strong circus strongman, workouts revolved more around swimming, boxing, and the Charles Atlas school of Dynamic Tension. I don't think the "jacked and stacked" style of strongman we associate with the image today really came around until the late 70's with Pumping Iron and The Incredible Hulk, popularising the idea of the visually appealing strongman. Of course not, he got abducted by simping nymphs instead
I love that Hercules embraces Hylas at the end
He was certainly a good sport about being bested in their little competition.
So do I
Indeed. In the original story they were in fact lovers.
Excellent film - even today.
I love this movie for so many reasons, but Nigel Green's perfectly British reading of the line "Discus?" is way up there.
I remember Patrick McGoohan in The Prisoner offering someone toast and “…marmalaaaaade?”, said in a similar fashion.
😂 I've always felt exactly the same. Genius moment.
Hercules is the son of Zeus. Hylas has some balls on him to challenge a literal legend. Good for him.
Thus was Greek myth told. Like with the bear; sometimes you beat the Gods, and sometimes they did far worse things than simply beat you. ;)
