This makes me feel old because I can remember when all the Old Timers, Schrades, Bucks, and Ontarios were all made in the USA. Case is still holding on.
These traditional knives still got their place, I like them. I got an Opinel from France in Carbon steel, it's really sharp, holds it's edge forever, it has a locking mechanism a wooden handle and weights literally nothing. Great presentation, go on with this great content.
Isn’t it a fantastic piece I also have it and it’s great!!!! I’m very happy with mine except one thing the shield was put in buy a drunk guy is so crooked….. and good point I never realized that about the stainless steel marked on the box!!!!! Well I guess it’s one thing to do and that’s sink it in some hot vinegar 😊stay well
I gotta tell you, this video really made my day! Thanks for your initial thoughts on that Bruin, I've decided to get one the next time I get paid. I'd eventually like to get their stockman and trapper patterns as well. And I'm glad to hear that Rebar is working well for you so far, I sure enjoy using mine! Wonderful slips by Richter too, he does nice work. Cheers!
So dayuuum cool that you’re showing us traditional slip joints!! I have quite the collection!! I recently picked up a Serge Panchenko Wildcard Slip Joint!! It’s badass!!! The video with your friend (forgot her name) was fun!! I think you were a bit smitten 😁!!! Cheers Sista!!!
Don't know whats wrong with me, haven't watched a knife video in months. Thanks for sharing, been looking at the old timer for months, now concidering to buy one even more(:
I love the color of that rebar, I don’t have one yet. I have the wave and surge, both obvious superstars, but I have been wondering about the rebar, I busted out laughing when your talking to the camera and you say, “ you lil fucker” I was dead laughing so hard. 😂
That’s awesome. Much more interesting than the latest from China that comes with a cartoon can, coin and wipe for only $300. I could sit down and cut up an apple with that Old Timer.👍
Great video. Really useful content covering "new" slipjoint offerings from Old Timer and Case, Richter's slips, and your two blade philosophy. I look forward to a sharpening video talking about replacing factory edges with your own, Jim
If you’re up for an experiment I’ve found leaving a blade standing in vinegar or wrapped in a paper towel soaked in lemon juice overnight creates a dark grey patina on 1095. The vinegar method makes a solid grey and the paper towel a more mottled grey of different tones. What’s this knife oil you mention? Also, have you used any knife sharpening services? Btw ~ the center pins are intentionally proud. They shouldn’t be uncomfortable but they are supposed to stick out kinda like an outy bellybutton.
I gota say, your impassioned plea about USA-made knives a while back inspired me to sell all my Chinese-brand knives (but not my USA-brand Chinese OEM knives...yet) and focus on buying USA-brand/USA-made only from here on out. We need more channels like yours that focus on that. There's plenty of USA-made knives out there, but so many knife/edc YT channels hock Chinese brands for clicks and the mindless lemmings just gobble it up while riding the hype train to Sezzle town. It's kind of sickening to behold. Everybody says they 'need' a new knife that they've probably owned 10x over that looks and does the same dang thing from the newest brand to come out of nowhere. It's a vicious influencing cycle. Thanks for you honest opinions and unique take on all things knives. Keep it up! 👍
Dang phone didn't buzz. The "R" slips look great 👍. Moving fencing is not fun and it likes to bite. Amazing 🤩 one hand opening of the Old Timer. Take care!
Another good source for case knives that I’ve recently discovered online is Shepard Hills Cutlery. I recently purchased a Panama trapper in lizard green jigged bone that I really am loving right now. This store has a large selection of case knives that I couldn’t find elsewhere.
The Bruin looks great! I went to Knifecenter, they are saying it's a Schrade knife, but made by somebody for them. We may never know. The confusing bit about the steel is weird. If it doesn't patina, I guess you'll know it's SS!
They’re also making the Sharpfinger in the US again . Heard through the grapevine that Bear and Son are making em for Schrade but that’s speculation at best .
I have a feeling that it is 1095, the blade stamp should be right. The high level of polish may be what is keeping it from easily forming a patina. I just ordered one and will experiment and see if it will patina. Either way it turns out I like the knife and it will get used! I do love my modern knives but there is just something special about traditionals that I really enjoy. My favorites are 2 and 3 bladed knives. They provide the right blade for any task and I usually carry one along with a modern folder and multitool.
These knives are exciting. I'm wanting one, could be my next knife purchase. My favorite Leatherman model is the Fuse, just the right size for me. The Wave kind of pulls my pants off.
I'm a mech fitter machinist and looking at the blade, it my instinct (which doesn't count for much to be fair) would be that it's polished stainless, it tends to have a slightly whiter tone in than polished carbon steel in my experience. It's a shame that it's not going to pick up a patina if that's what you want but if Shrade keep up that quality, I'm sure there will be a enough demand for them to produce a carbon steel model and it will be hard to resist the temptation to add it to the collection.
I absolutely love that GEC Bullnose! The patina and handle color look really good together. I might need to have one. Lol Did you receive your KN Bakeapple yet? I've been enjoying mine for a little over a week and I'm curious to hear your thoughts. It's a fun and tough little knife!
Great video. I've worn out or lost several 194OT models. The latest are basically junk. Maybe they'll go back to USA made and I can go back to carrying one. Can't even guess how many squirrels, coons and deer I've cleaned with those old knives.
I agree about the slips I find myself just smelling and rubbing it all day!!!! I never seen quality like his slips either and I have 1000 slips I accumulated over the years and some are high end I spent hundreds of dollars on one slip and there not even close to his work!!!! And don’t try it Erica I have another 2 on the way!!!! 😂 that will make 5 total so don’t even try chasin my lol hahaha lol 😂too funny I told you I’m going to fill my bed with them and roll in them 😊
I have both the Old Timer Generational Series Trapper and Stockman and I agree the steel is not 1095. I tried to force a patina with boiling vinegar and it did nothing. I wrote an email to Old Timer and I am waiting to hear back from them.
I was going to buy a Bruin but I'd want to know it was Carbon before I got it. I got a Case Muskrat in CV and chestnut bone this week. I came immaculate with great fit and finishing. It's true the points are a bit rounded off. You say you know an easy fix. Any chance of some tips? It's so gorgeous I don't want to eff it up.
Hi Erica, what if you found out the Old Timer was in a very low quality steel, but it still holds a decent edge? Would that change your opinion on it? Just a thought experiment. Cheers
I dont know if you have ever talked with LuvThemKnives but he has access to steel testing and I would bet if you just told him about the steel mystery he would probably look into it
