I live in Kenya and around late June, we had large nationwide protests against a budget draft (Finance Bill) that proposed an increase in taxes that would’ve been eventually gobbled up by our corrupt politicians. So on June 25th, our parliament passed the Finance Bill after being told by citizens to reject it.
Protestors got mad and invaded the Parliament building and soon after, the government teamed up with our largest network/internet provider to strangle the internet for a few hours. Right after the internet blackout, the Police went on a killing spree.
After a few hours when tensions cooled down, the internet came back and our largest network provider (Safaricom) wrote a statement saying an “underwater sea cable” got damaged causing the internet blackout when in fact there was no evidence of the sea cable failure.

One of my supervisors at work is from Nairobi and recently visited on vacation for a month. She told me many people were displaced by rapid flooding due to heavy rainfall and many others perished. I can only imagine how mismanagement of emergency response resources, personnel, etc. will be covered up next time a natural disaster strikes and internet access is severely limited or completely blocked because the government decided to use that technological outage as a way to disguise their corruption.

I live in Syria and trust me brother it's WAY worse than you mentioned.
every high school exam for the last 5 years comes with a 3-4 hours complete telecommunication shut down. yes not only the internet but also mobile calls/sms as well, leaving only landlines working.
as you can imagine there are countless disasters coming out of this unfathomably stupid decision, last month an old woman in my neighbourhood had a stroke at the time of the shut down, she lived alone with only a mobile phone and she was found barely alive by her family trying to call for help and survived with brain damage.
car accidents in shut down times are 100 times more dangerous, you can't call a hospital or a friend and you just have to pray you see someone with a working vehicle who can take you to a hospital.
this is to say nothing about all the people who work online in a country with complete economic collapse who will suffer because of this.
and the worst part is that high school exams will still have cheating anyway as exam observers will actively help students or turn a blind eye on students cheating for financial or even sectarian reasons so it's all basically for nothing.
i think people in positions of power know this. they don't care about cheating and to them this is just how an authoritarian government reminds the people who's really in charge.

Given America's January 6th, 2021, I can't fully agree with that but I understand the sentiment. Regardless of the matter though, I don't agree with shutting the internet down. Maybe that might work on countries that are more agricultural or have a lot of factories that don't rely on the internet, but the U.S. no longer focuses on these. Online business is a heavy part of the whole country. Shut it down and that's pretty much saying you have no problem with the entire country failing, and I don't see how that helps the government. That's the real kind of action that would incite a mob or inspire more assassinations.

    1) The internet shutdown was not limited to Dhaka. it was enforced nationwide.
    2) The death toll is significant. While the official figure provided by the Hasina government is approximately 230, estimates suggest that over 1300 individuals may have been killed. This figure includes both students and civilians who supported the student movement. These estimates are based on reports from hospitals and clinics.
To put it into perspective, there were days when the death toll among students alone exceeded 100. Between August 4th - 6th, more than 300 individuals lost their lives, according to Prothom Alo, one of the most reputable news portals in Bangladesh.
    3) The internet shutdown was implemented to suppress the protesters, not to prevent the spread of misinformation. In fact, it was the fascist Hasina government and its state-controlled media were spreading misinformation. Many of us were sharing videos of the government's egregious actions with international media outlets through social media and other means. Many journalists and reporters were also trying to bring global attention to these atrocities. The Hasina government believed that an internet shutdown would stop us, but they were mistaken.

Thankfully over here in the US we just shot down something that would have been the start to stuff like this happening.
KOSA died before it could be put across the desk of the President to be signed into law.
It was supposedly to prevent children from seeing explicit material, but the reality of it was that it was a bold-faced attempt to just require every single US citizen to age-verify (and do so in a way that gives away a lot more info than just your name and age), which can be (and likely would have been) used to track a person's online activity to a level not seen before in the US.
Every time you see "internet" and "think of the children" in the same discussion, let alone sentence, paragraph, or document, you should do a lot more digging to figure out what's really going on, because it's almost certainly true that "think of the children" is being used as a smokescreen to hide what they REALLY want to do to the internet, and it also has a track record of never being a good thing.
I'm hopeful that we're more vigilant in the future against this kind of underhanded "play to the feelings" type of tactic when it comes to making the internet a less safe place for minorities and oppressed groups that use it, but I know that they're just gonna keep trying it.

I work out of my home office answering the phone 12 hours a day (9-9) for our family business. I have always insisted on hardwire wall phones in case the electricity goes off, then we would still have communication for work and emergencies. However, since our phones, internet, Wi-Fi and TV got bundled, we are at the mercy of one wire and one company. Last week our wire got pulled loose by our sewer contractors and we lost ALL our services because Frontier couldn’t get here for four days. The government wants us to go all electric, while at the same time warning us about solar flares and EMPs that can wreck all electronics. I don’t trust anything the government can turn off with a button. Now I have an extra $150 on my electric bill for FMCC and “combined public benefit charges”. $500 bill for 2 people. Don’t forget how supply and demand works for pricing.

I'm from Kazakhstan, we had our internet shut down all over the country for a week or even more in 2022, when there were protests. The only information we could get came from the tv, and they did not say one word of the truth. We are very much a cashless country by now, and a lot of people were also left with no way to pay for anything. Had to break a piggy bank to buy some food. It was awful, many people died because they had no way of knowing where was safe or not, and the government still does it locally sometimes when there are any kinds of protests or the president visits an area.

For the preppers: Go get a HAM Radio. Having "Internet Shutdown" laws makes things easier for authoritarian governments to act in such manner but, if the situation arises, any government can shutdown the internet with or without laws. Most countries have some kind of emergency powers act in place that according to varying legal criteria can seize control of the telecommunications. For an example in case of war or some other "crisis", exact requirements differing from country to country, but most countries have some legal capability to shut down the internet.

In Algeria it all started in 2016 after multiple exams in the national final high schools exams got leaked (most likely a student who was given the questions by someone in the chain that are responsible for distributing the exams over the whole country), since then we had to deal with internet shut downs 5 days every year in the time of high school national finals, there has been some effort to fix the problem like blocking social media instead of the whole internet, but this is very costly in terms of economics, as someone who works at a tech company, 5 days of lost work and communication, does effect productivity, and try to scale not just in one company but the whole economy, it is extremely dangerous to let the government have this power over communication and economy.

In Uganda, a nation in East Africa, internet shutdowns are common before, during, and after general elections. These shutdowns are often linked to concerns about electoral malpractice, as the current regime frequently uses its power to suppress dissent and control information. When the government learns of planned protests, it often disrupts internet access to hinder the organization of these movements and to prevent the dissemination of information about police actions, including the mistreatment of protesters, unlawful imprisonment, and the sudden and mysterious disappearance of outspoken individuals.

Sure I can see it working for countries that actually have laws to that effect, but the data traders will simply move to different countries that don't enforce this and keep going. On top of that, for the few that do delete your data, many of them can simply reacquire it immediately afterwards(it is like having a bucket under an open tap, sure you make them empty the bucket occasionally, but the data is still flowing out of the tap). The whole thing comes across as an absurd to waste money to me.

In India, internet shutdowns are commonplace for the slightest of indications that there might be an event that the administration will find itself difficult to contain. It's a rather convenient excuse for the administration to exert control over the masses rather than taking responsibility and doing some actual ground work. It is a very real possibility for an authoritarian regime to cut off internet and other communication services in the name of security and manipulate the situation for their own purposes, especially in developing countries like India.

For rights to be guaranteed, they have to be guaranteed _by_ someone. The concept of "inviolable rights" is an ideal, not a fundamental feature of reality. All rights are violable, and therefore must be defended. It is reasonable to assume that you are more likely to defend your own rights than a government which is not answerable to your approval, so the best defense is active participation in democratic government.

I've had regional shutdowns more than I'd like last year. One minor killing involving religious issues and before we even knew of the cause, we got to know that the internet was shut down. Another time, a few people were caught trying to help people cheat in some government-run exam and the next thing you know, the internet's out.
The biggest irony is that my country has a website that shows which regions have no internet access. It almost feels like they like to show off the fact that they're regularly cutting internet access in various places across the country. I mean, it's not like the people in the affected areas would be able to access the website or do anything about their situation anyways.

The satellite internet recommendation truly baffles me.
How naive can people be? The 1960s just called to remind you that LEO is *not* the _ultimate high ground_ .
There's three major reason why StarLink and friends won't do anything to help with this:
    1. Business: companies require *local* licenses to operate in foreign countries. No license, no legal grounds for operation, hence adherence to local law.
    2. Technological: satellite internet still requires ground stations to connect to the internet. Mandate kill-switches and remote access to those and you gained nothing; alternatively, governments can simply literally pull the plug on them should they choose to do so.
    3. Political: Mr. "Free Speech Warrior" demonstrated time and again that he is *not* actually an advocate for free speech: StarLink has been shut down in Ukraine on behest of a single person, X grants more censorship requests from authoritarian governments that Twitter ever did, etc. So on top of governments threatening to shut the internet down, you're now also at the merci of sociopaths or corporate overlords who can pre-emptively do the same even before any government asks for it, because it suits *their* personal or corporate agenda ; doesn't sound like a win to me.

Thank you gor raising this issue. Much of these problems can be avoided by having less reliance on computers, and by retaining old school human employees using actual paper files for important information storage. When there is a power cut, many retail and office businesses are shut off unnecessarily. When automated online systems are convenient for some, there should still be actual human staff avsilable to answer phones and deal directly with the public. Without this, no one is held responsible for cock-ups , and businesses can get away without transparency to the public; this is especially true for government departments, who trivialise the privacy of public individuals, but lack coresponding transparency themselves. Anything online must be backed up with hard-copy info to avoid institutional over-reach.

Free flow of info was a good idea when that involved printed pamphlets, because it took time to read them, giving readers a chance to reflect on how far they agreed and how far they disagreed with the content.
The problem with social media is that it's too fast for rational thought: it triggers emotions and actions follow before there is time to think.
In a recent example in the UK, a social media post blamed a triple murder on a recent Moslem immigrant. By the time people realised this was a blatant lie (the alleged perp in fact being a born-here Christian) there were mobs burning down places where Moslem asylum seekers were living.
We need some way to slow down the purely emotional panic responses.
In my opinion (yours may vary): That will not happen because the electronic media is paid for by advertiser's and they rather like people to repaint too their ads emotionally.

I’m increasingly frustrated with the way the term “misinformation” is used. It often seems like a convenient excuse to silence dissenting voices rather than address genuine issues. Many of the so-called “misinformation” claims are actually attempts by those in power to suppress opposing viewpoints.

In Indian Occupied Kashmir it is common, 5 August 2019 In Initially a complete shutdown was imposed for just over five months, following which archaic 2G services were restored. Nearly a year on, these restrictions continue-mobile data speeds remain throttled at the 2G level with a 384Kbps upper limit.

The internet needs to be fully decentralized and open source. Imagine a world where you simply connect an antenna to your router and you have internet free forever. An antenna on your terrace or roof that will p2p talk to each other globally similar to cell towers. Blockchain can function as decentralized DNS, p2p antennas can use IPFS technology and so on.

People criticized "web3" too harshly. They thought web3 is crypto bros project to scam people. People still even dont realize cryptos also have nothing to do with scams. People are simply ignorant. Web3 and crypto is supposed to be decentralized and censorship resistant. Which means all responsibility for protect your assets is on you and no third party (government) is supposed to interfere. People getting scammed in this domain is their own fault for misunderstanding what this technology is about.
