  • Pastured Eggs - How To Keep Your Farm Fresh Eggs Clean. Today we talk about strategies we use to keep our farm fresh pastured eggs clean.
    Our chickens are out on pasture where they are moved frequently onto a new paddock of fresh grass. We make sure to keep the nesting boxes clean as well as close up the roosts at night so they chickens can't sleep in the nest boxes. This makes for super clean eggs that are safe to keep out on your counter for weeks at a time.
    Follow along and see how we manage our pastured egg layers.
    We practice sustainable agriculture on our farm by using multi-species to build soil and fertilize the ground. We have pastured chickens, grass fed lamb, pastured turkey, farm fresh duck eggs and chicken eggs.
    Sheraton Park Farms practices holistic, sustainable farming and soil building using a rotational grazing model as we try to grow more grass on our farm.

    Hello - We are a small family farm in North Colchester, Nova Scotia. We raise heritage Pork (Berkshire), Dorset Sheep, Muskovy Ducks and chickens; both laying hens and meat birds as well as hatch some of our own eggs. The information that you provide is an excellent resource for anyone interested in starting with a few chickens or are already in the business of raising chickens and selling eggs. We appreciate very much the time and effort put into these videos and the wealth of information you provide. Thank you.

    Chuck thank you for the videos. Last spring I bought raised and processed 35 meat birds. I also bought 9 pullets at the same time I've raised them and added adult birds to my flock. I now have 25 hens and some other various size and ages. I'm starting to get eggs more regularly now and am so excited. I've housed them in my 35x65 greenhouse this winter this has been an ideal situation the poo in there scratch the ground. I'm excited to see the garden grow this summer.
    I'm going to build a coop with nesting box's in it with perches to roost on. Then I'm going to use the same poultry netting you use to creat pen.
    I've loved them. My purpose at first was to have eggs for my family,but with what has been going on over the last year I decided I wanted eggs to to share with friends and people in need.
    Thank you for your encouragement and your knowledge.

    I watched a video from I think it was a channel called 'chickens in my garden', from New Zealand. She did some experiments about how long it was safe to keep eggs out of the fridge. She tested them for freshness mainly. She was testing eggs at various ages up to a year. The one's that were up to 6 months old were perfectly fine, after that they started to deteriorate. They dried out, got lighter in weight and didn't look as good... but none of them went bad, not even at a year old. I keep my store bought eggs in the fridge, but I just got my own chickens, will be keeping my nesting boxes clean and keeping my own eggs out of the fridge. I can't wait for my girls to start laying, should be another 4 - 6 weeks.

    Glad you are helping clear up the confusion on both sides. I've heard people say there is no benefit to refrigerating the eggs and others believe they must be refrigerated. As you stated, if you keep your chickens, nesting boxes and eggs clean from the get-go and don't wash off the bloom, there is no real "need" for most people to keep them in the fridge, but if you have more than you can use over a couple of weeks, keeping them in the fridge will help them stay fresh longer.
    We just ordered our first hens the other week. A bit late in the year, so a bit limited selection, but we are excited and we'll be able to order some next spring to fill out the variety we were wanting. About how many hens do you keep in that area? I've been trying to figure out about how often I might need to move our birds ( about 16 starting off in a hundred foot of netting).

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  4 года назад +5

      Exactly! The industrialized food system has moved us so far from the source of our food, people don't know the truth about a lot of things. We try to educate our customers and they come back to us after trying things and are blown away at how simple, better and more nutritious their food can be. Really appreciate you watching!

    How many chickens do u have out of that coop ? How far are the slats on the floor apart ? Do the nesting pads come cut ? Or a roll ? I’m surprised u don’t need to electrify for the predators. Well glad to see ya as always . Todd

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  4 года назад +2

      There are about 120 birds in the eggmobile. I really need a bigger one for next year because we are going to up the size of our flock. The slats are about 1 1/2" apart if memory serves. The nesting pads are already cut to size and we just drop them in the boxes. Only real predator problem we have had has been with hawks and aerial predators. I think them going inside at night and the netting as a barrier keeps the ground critters away. Appreciate y'all watching and commenting! Helps keep us visable.

    Good stuff man. Also, fresh eggs with the bloom on it also draws snakes. Put one or two in a minnow trap and sit it on the ground and if a snake comes around you’ll catch him so he can’t get your little babies or other eggs.
