Legend has it Nintendo engineer Gunpei Yokoi was taking a train to work one day when he noticed a businessman passing the time by pressing keys on his calculator. From this incident, Yokoi was inspired to create the Game and Watch series.[Text Wrapping Break][Text Wrapping Break]In the early 1980s, the Game and Watch were a line-up of portable games by Nintendo that used the technology from the calculators of the era, namely their LCD screens. Yokoi’s design philosophy was called “lateral thinking of withered technology” which meant instead of trying to innovate with the newest and most powerful hardware, Yokoi believed in using existing technologies in new and creative ways. By using this older tech, the price point for the Game and Watch was reasonable and was one of the reasons for its success and popularity.[Text Wrapping Break][Text Wrapping Break]Each Game and Watch could only play one game, but that would change with Yokoi’s next and most famous invention, the Game Boy. By late eighties, Nintendo had found huge success with the Nintendo Entertainment System. Yokoi wanted to combine the portability of his Game and Watch line with the interchangeable cartridges and 8-bit processing power of the NES. And thus, the Game Boy was born.[Text Wrapping Break][Text Wrapping Break]Despite the availability of color screens and more powerful CPUs, Yokoi adamantly stuck to his design principles and the Game Boy was launched with a monochrome screen that could only display four shades of grey. Meanwhile competitors like the Sega Game Gear had color backlit screens and the Atari Lynx had both a color screen and a powerful 16-bit processor which allowed for Super NES mode 7 like effects.[Text Wrapping Break][Text Wrapping Break]But Yokoi’s Game Boy would prove to be the victor as what these competitors failed to realize all these more powerful technologies drained the batteries quicker than you could say “carbon footprint”. The Game Boy offered almost twice the amount of battery life and also had the exclusive rights to a little game called Tetris.[Text Wrapping Break][Text Wrapping Break]Eventually the Game Boy sold over 120 million units and launched franchises like Kirby and Pokemon. Have fun![Text Wrapping Break]

Batteries used to be WAY more expensive back then. Plus almost everything used them so getting your folks to give you more batteries was a challenge.
Badmunky64 SPIT ON THEM!
It's crazy to remember how ubiquitous and necessary batteries used to be, for pretty much anything that wasn't plugged into the wall.
I honestly don't know how battery companies are still in business, because they basically only are still needed for TV remotes and flashlights. Everything else we use has a built in rechargeable battery.
@@Luschan I'm sure they've taken a hit, but you'd be surprised how many kids' toys still use batteries.
We had rechargeable!!!! Wooohh
Beautiful lore of the famous Gameboy. That thing changed our lives forever.
True

The Ultimate Weapon: *Tetris*
Imagine if the SAME developers made a REAL, POWERFUL, (NOT COPYRIGHT), *TETRIS 2*
Lateral thinking of Withered technology (LTWT)
It’s interesting to hear this considering that this philosophy is still used today by Nintendo just look at the Switch, instead of trying to come out with the console they could compete graphically with the PlayStation and Xbox they instead decided to be innovative and go in a different direction with their cancel this time.
I thought it was "Lateral Thinking of *Withered* Technology".
But the meaning is pretty much the same.
GreyWolfLeaderTW thanks for that catch spellcheck is screwing with me
I didn't see the unedited post, but if you said 'Weathered' then it would have made just as much sense, since they're pretty much synonymous. But yeah, I like that train of thought. As much as I despise the man, Itagaki, the guy who made Ninja Gaiden, once called the original DS like an old car that you're familiar with. Which, in economic terms, is really smart since everyone is already familiar with the tech, so, giving them incentive to try and fiddle around with existing stuff is more cost effective that always upgrading to the latest and greatest.
Vagrant Vagabond it’s one of the reasons why I think indie games are doing better than some AAA games. Instead of an individual game engine derived specifically to render grass shading, they try to make fun and inventive stories and gameplay, Plus just because they use an 8-bit style doesn’t mean that the graphics aren’t still impressive.
AKA
LighT WeighT
As in, Nintendo must have had some real lightweight drinkers at the barbecue when someone successfully pitched their new online service for the Switch.
> 4 shades of green
Althhough, with creative usage of flickering and the screen's motion blur, you could attain 3 more shades of green
I’ve never even heard of those two other portable gaming consoles.
That’s how you measure success: not by overall growth or how good the graphics are, but by how well you remember them.
I'm old enough to remember them and the SEGA Game Gear is superior, but the GameBoy was dominating when it came out.
Yes.
The reason you never heard of them because you just a young jit
mega sean I own a SEGA Game Gear. It's honestly really good, but it required many batteries, and had fewer interesting games.
I played my games at home. Since power was not an issue, the Game Gear was perfect.
"Have fun."
Yes, I think I will.
It’s so sad that this company shut down. Their videos were so entertaining. I don’t believe I’m going to “have fun” :/
You have to Love that classic Gray Brick. The Game Boy is a true classic, in my books.
Bryce Mckenzie my Gameboy Color was pink.
My gameboy color was a gameboy advance
I had the OG Game Boy, and a color in Kiwi green
Gray? It was WHITE in 1989. Trust me, I got one for Xmas '89.
BEIGE!!!!!!
I remember my Dad got me a Gameboy SP with Super Mario Brothers 3 as my first game.
It was amazing!
Tetris
Tetris was the most popular game on the Gameboy
@@_moonsprince_6286 It also ist the Most sold game of all time
Angry Video Game Nerd has a nice video about Atari Lynx and other failed consoles.
I love the book called "GameBoy: Four shades of gray"
Gameboy is OP, but the Color was just a game changer. I still have a Color I play to this day.
In 2018 it would be called the Game Person*
1:25
Iron Man: I have a hulk....
Game boy: I have a Tetris......
You forget so much significant BIG thinks about the born of the game boy this is insane...
Why is Gameboy sad at the end? The last part was actually a good thing! I wish there was more of a point to the traditional sad face at the end.
Why did this channel stop?
old comment but apparently because of the change to RUclips's monetization requiring 10+ minute videos
Incredible video!
Indeed. Gameboys are such cool systems.
Hi
Hi Eliot
happy 35th anniversary gameboy!!! :3
If you messed with the shading a little you could make pikachu look more yellow then grey on the gameboy
I don't think that's how you should of ended the video, that was just not a "Have fun" moment. You should have ended with the fact that Game Boys were known for their durability, like the one that's still fully functional after being caught in an explosion.
jesus what happened to your channel this was one of my favorites );
Switch: "So this is the story of my Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather."
What happened to this channel man? One day there was content the next there was nothing for weeks then months. I miss these small form videos
The company that owned them Polaris or Polaros shut down in early 2019. So basically LORE died with POLARIS.
Should have also mentioned that the Gameboy was easier to carry.
1:05 *4 shades of gray* ... that's like *46 less* then we got today!
This animation is very cool!
It's a bit sad. I recently rediscovered the Sony PSP, which made the same disastrous mistakes that the Atari Lynx and Sega GameGear made.
The Sony PSP has a great library of exclusive games (include the sequel to the almighty Final Fantasy Tactics, FFT: War of the Lions) but Sony worked way too hard to put in so many top-of-the-line features like a processor that was more powerful than the PS2's, that made it too expensive upon initial release.
I miss this channel.
Did Woolie make this video after the scream contest in the latest friendcast?
"IT HAS NO GOOD GAMES!"
Ah, the good ol' grey brick of gaming past.
WHITE. My God, do we have no other 1989 gamers here?
Thank you train calculator man
Nice... Take my retro like.
Oh. Trust me.
I truly did have fun back in the 90s and early 2000.
Good times... good times.
Cannot believe you don't have a picture yet. I'd make it myself if I needed to.
They used to have a picture. It was the upset face at the end of every video but during one of RUclips's updates it got changed back to the default letter.
fast facts cries in the background
Except that they actually didn't have the rights to Tetris!
That was a great invention in my opinion, hours of fun.
Ah...the beautiful origin of handheld gaming.
We could use more of that kind of design ethic.
That's a plan of mine if I successfully start my own game company Insha-Allah
To think Tetris is still #1 sold game of all time today.
I think the Game Gear should have that face.
Gameboy forever :]
I remember when everyone in school was playing 1st gen on their gameboys during recess and lunch.
Gargoyle's Quest.
The end.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN EVEN CONSOLES GOT LORE-
GameBoy was my first true video game system. I was allowed to have it because it didn't use the TV!
My favorite portable system is the Game Boy Advance SP. It's vertical, which makes it easier to hold. I like the Nintendo DS and 3DS, but they aren't as good as the Game Boy and its successors.
I wonder who the man that played with the calculator is. We owe him a lot.
“Oh These are some cool bananas”
*AaaAAaaAAaaasAAaaaaaaAAaA*
I had game boy color for Pokemon blue and Yellow. Pokemon is the only handheld games I play. Tempted to get a Nintendo Switch for the new Pokemon game.
I request a Lore T-shirt with the famous Have Fun Face!
BMO: King of OOO and all things gaming
Oh look they might not be dead
Cool
Whats the name of that music in the end? another version of your theme music?
You guys have had that consistent ending face for over 6 years
Edit: you havent posted since 2018
Yeah but the Game Gear had a TV tuner
Nerogeist I knew it
FUN FACT : Sir Patrick Stewart carried a GB around in his giant costume pockets when filming Moby Dick in the 90s (playing Captain Ahab).
Anyone else want to see Nintendo release a Game Boy Classic?
This explains a lot about Nintendo
LORE, can you do Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator lore?
Why would he not at least give a back light
here still has the classic brick?! o/
Did you know that this gameboy somehow survived a Massive Nuke in a War from a soldier and still works
Wasn't a nuke. Was a napalm strike. Nukes haven't been used since World War 2.
Pretty much Napalm is just as nasty though but mostly incerates things.. but yea. it still works.
Infact the Nintendo DS was taken along up mount Everest and was more durable and kept going longer then more expensive gear they used on the trip that was designed for mountain climbing XD
Dude, it wasnt a nuke, a bomb yes, but if it were a nuke then even a nokia wouldnt survive.
The game gear plays master system games with the use of a fairly cheap pin convertor, have fun trying to shove an NES game in your gameboy.
A very good boy.
Neat
I will have fun.
1:24 And later Pokemon.
Is there ever going to be another video for this channel?
Yay BMO! BMO is so good!
like good Old gray.
Lore irl.
Megaman Lore next please
I still have my yellow gameboy color ^^
Okay.
Please do the Lore for the House of the Dead series.
What happened to the old animation?
interesting. Imagine if Pokemon was picket up by Sega. And we would walk around with the big 16 bit device and 1kg of batteries.
Y'all gonna do any new videos?
This series should be renamed to Lore in a minute-ish.
Stop the have fun thing
tragically gungpai died in a car accident
amazing! (0-0)
Were are you
i love your channel i hope to win but if i dont ill still support you
Man this place is very quiet too quiet
You could made the "lore face" when Game Boy saw the devices that you can attach to it, as the game boy camera... Ohgod
Ahh back when games are design to be affordable..... or something idk
Is all about tetris
Make a patreon after your next video that gets some attention
Gam Boi
What happened to this channel?
Why can't it be called the GaMe BoYgIrL.
Because it was 1989.
W
What ever happened to this channel
idk
