As videos go this on sits at the top: no BS, no fluff, no waste of time with stupid sxxt intros, it's right down to the matter, which is what viewers spending lots of time in youtube looking for info on fixing their cars or making a door... are looking for. It's not rocket science but it is not a common practice either. Secondly, this straightforward tutorial gave me an idea I didn't have to skip the pricey manufactured MDF interior doors in the style that I love, Shaker. Thank you!
After watching the video advert i was still skeptical. But when i finally downloaded the plans ruclips.net/user/postUgkxZF0EMnrujZvqHhGkxiz559uIABJWR9TG i was very impressed. The whole plan was just as you said in the video. Thank you very much. I now have a large and valuable collection for my woodworks. This is great!
I remembered this vid from a year ago or so and came back to it. This will stay relevant for indefinetly particularly as the prices of door keeps going up to the moon and yet one can make it easily with ply thanks to this excellent video. Thanks a lot!
Hey John thanks so much for this video! I just completed mine and it turned out just as you built it. The only thing I did differently was to use Birch plywood to the customer's request. It was so easy to construct just as you showed in your video
I love this.. I bought an old home (built in the 1930s) that has seen some renovations that left me with a bunch of awful cardboard torsion box style interior doors, until I saw this I had resigned myself to either paying out the nose for solid wood doors new, or to spending every free moment out trying to source appropriately sized antique doors... After watching this two weeks back I am already three of five doors in, and my technique has improved with each one. Thanks!
@Don Perkins The first one did, because I didnt have a truly flat assembly area. However, you know what makes a perfectly flat assembly area for doors? Two of the crappy doors I was replacing, put one on the sawhorses and glued the other one to it, head to foot, every door after that has come out perfect.
This is the best door making video on RUclips imo. Thank You. From here I went and looked up your website because it looks like you got fed up with utube. Cheers🇨🇦
My Dad was a builder, and made doors, especially one for a school tuck shop. But he didn't just use wood or plywood; he put in a steel panel. Made them much more robust. Even resists a fencepost used as a battering ram.
I read that you made all the door's for your home and it took some time and energy but their not crappy door's. Their Beautiful door's you should be proud to say, I made these door's. I wish I had half the talent that you have in wood working. I have a little bit and can do some of what you are doing but not all , so my hats off to you good Sir. Thank you for sharing your Knowledge with us.
Very cool. I need a new door for my camper. Watching you gives me confidence to try making one myself. I am not as good a carpenter as you but if I take it slow I think I can do it. Thanks.
What an awesome video John. Great watching you make something that is used and we see so many times a day but can also be so expensive, yet realizing it is a very straight forward process, with endless possibilities of customization!
Love it! Why didn't I think of building a door that way? Built quite a few. People don't realize just how labor intensive a simple door is. Near genius!
Thanks for sharing. Great process, but I didn't catch the plywood thickness you used. I assume it is 1/2" since it looks like it next to the 2 sheets of 1/2" you placed on the table. That comes to 1.5" thickness, which seems fine. But overall, I feel that doors can be made in a number of ways, but the reason certain ways are preferred is due to the warping issue. To me, an important test of whether a door-making method is good, is if the door does not warp over time. What say you on this? I assume plywood is somewhat stable, but it certainly does warp during storage, I find.
John, do you have more videos planned for this channel in the near future? Really enjoying your knowledgeable and sometimes out-of-the-box approaches. I also find that this channel always has stuff that's easy to relate to since everyone's familiar with houses.
This looks great. I have 6 doors to build and I will probably copy this. It has been a while since you completed this, would you change anything and have you had any warping? Thank you!!!
Thanks for your time with your wood working. I have watched lots of videos but you keep it simple and that's what I like about you keep up the good work.
Beautiful door. Thanks for the demonstration and concise explanation! It will be easy to take these techniques and adapt them to different styles of doors. Love your shirt, BTW! 😆
I liked the build, but I'm concerned about mounting the hinges into the ends, as in concerned that it will split or the door won't hold up. Since this was a while ago, how'd they fair?
Thank you this is what I was looking for in making a plywood door for my wardrobes. Without using a Pocket Hole Jig as I don't have one. Plus, I always wanted to know how to make a door the old fashion way.
cool door . part of me wants to see it stained , but i'm really not a fan of stained woods . but they can be nice ,and since you're painting it. are you gonna fill in cracks with spackle or just paint it ? i'll be waiting ,.twittling my thumbs waiting for the installation video. another great video .
I never , in my wildest dreams thought of making your own door out of plywood. Great video John. Thanks. Oh, BTW, seems like your Tee Shirt is a bigger hit then the video from reading all of the comments !
Thanks for the video! I am getting ready to attempt making about 10 interior doors myself. Ill probably do a video and stick it up on my channel in a week or two when I get around to them.
Older build article: ibuildit.ca/projects/plywood-door/ I have seven of these to make for the main floor of my house. While money can be saved by making these yourself, there is a lot of work involved, so you should consider that before taking it on. My reasons for doing this are mainly because I'll end up with doors that are much better quality than the typical hollow core doors you get from the retailers. Also, I have the freedom to make them exactly how I want, as plain or as fancy as needed to match the decor. Could you make this same type door on an outside door of a play house ? I have a rough opening of 36 3/4 high and 47 3/4 wide and l want to make a double door. Your work is absolutely amazing and inspiring to a 70 year old lady....Thanks so much !
Hi John another entertaining and informative video. I am not sure if you have ever done this before. But I notice you use different nailers in your videos and this one is no exception. why do you have different ones, can the the larger on not take the smaller nails you put in the smaller brad nailer?
You can actually make a "real" door with ply by laminating it to make stiles and rails with a tongue and groove, also with a true centre panel that fits perfectly - I've made shaker style kitchen doors with ply and it works great.
Love the video. Excellent information here. I hope this doesn't sound redundant but wouldn't it be easier to use a router on the inner edges of the door instead of measuring and cutting all of the reveal/trim and gluing it on? I just feel like you simplified the entire idea of making a door until you reached that point. Just sharing my thoughts. To be fair, you did say you were going to do that part the hard way. I hit the like button on this. Thanks you for sharing your skill.
I dig the attachment you did to your Clamps. So all you did was add some Wood to them ... and basically you not only have more then just the one spot it would apply pressure, but the whole wood adds pressure and ... of course since now wood applies pressure and not the round steel ... its good for the workpiece. Hmm, need to upgrade a few of my clamps this way too.

There was a lot of great information to soak up but as a carpenter I'm left with a feeling I have a lot more to learn in this corner of wood working.
I really liked how you did the edges of the door. Some people just leave that out or just don't finish it. Great work!
This is the best door making video on RUclips imo. Thank You. From here I went and looked up your website because it looks like you got fed up with utube. Cheers🇨🇦
That's an interesting approach using a material that hadn't even crossed my mind.
Made it last year and it still looks and works great. Thanks for the video
Awesome video - great to see someone from the GWN still using freedom units (imperial)!!!
SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS VIDEO!!!! thank you for sharing a bare bones, but easy to follow video!
Never seen someone building a door. Fascinating!
Really wish I'd seen this design before I made a set of doors for my workshop. The edge banding/finishing was a nice touch. Thanks for sharing.
My Dad was a builder, and made doors, especially one for a school tuck shop. But he didn't just use wood or plywood; he put in a steel panel. Made them much more robust. Even resists a fencepost used as a battering ram.

Pretty nice John...looks like an easy, low cost way to get good quality and customize to your needs. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! That is clever! We have several plain, hollow core doors that need to go. I may give it a shot.
Very cool. I need a new door for my camper. Watching you gives me confidence to try making one myself. I am not as good a carpenter as you but if I take it slow I think I can do it. Thanks.
very heavy for a camper door
I'm amazed with what you make out of plywood
What an awesome video John. Great watching you make something that is used and we see so many times a day but can also be so expensive, yet realizing it is a very straight forward process, with endless possibilities of customization!
I really like the lumber inserts to finish the edges of the door. I am going to try this soon, Thanks!
Love it! Why didn't I think of building a door that way? Built quite a few. People don't realize just how labor intensive a simple door is. Near genius!
John, you are doing what you do so well that I'm always happy to see a new posting! Including your video skills and quality of picture and sound.
Nice build, liked the scarf joint, and interior trim on the door. Thanks for the sizing video on the other channel.
Thanks for the great video John. 👍 You are an amazing creator.
Thanks for sharing. Great process, but I didn't catch the plywood thickness you used. I assume it is 1/2" since it looks like it next to the 2 sheets of 1/2" you placed on the table. Thanks for the video. I have been trying to figure out how to make a door with plywood. You have given my answer.

You sir are a true craftsman! That door looks fabulous! That door if far better than any of those hollow POS doors they sell at the hardware stores.
Thumbs up for that sweet shirt.
Thanks for your time with your wood working. I have watched lots of videos but you keep it simple and that's what I like about you keep up the good work.

ruclips.net/channel/UCetKTntSyrQs0g2yP4QHz5g
That door looks so adoorable!
Thanks for the help, I've been needing to replace a door on my garage, but it's an odd size. This design should work great.
Beautiful door. Thanks for the demonstration and concise explanation! It will be easy to take these techniques and adapt them to different styles of doors. Love your shirt, BTW! 😆
Beautiful work - My friend and I just built a wooden exterior door using the same method!
Curious what materials you used. I'm planning to do the same.
RIP Neal Peart. John, you are a master of your craft the way Neal was. Must be a Canadian thing.
I just love all your builds.
Very good video....thanks for sharing...size of the playwood pls
Giving you a thumbs up just for the shirt. Now i'll watch the rest of the video.
The best detailed video.
I liked the build, but I'm concerned about mounting the hinges into the ends, as in concerned that it will split or the door won't hold up. Since this was a while ago, how'd they fair?
Just a great video. Good door design and well explained. Thank you
I LOVE YOUR SHIRT!
Thank you this is what I was looking for in making a plywood door for my wardrobes. Without using a Pocket Hole Jig as I don't have one. Plus, I always wanted to know how to make a door the old fashion way.
Love the shirt and the door. Thanks for another great video!

Brilliant. I wish I could do that... I wish I had the tools also. 👌
Another superb video. Thanks.

Haven't even watched the video yet John, but wanted to give you a big 🖒 for that shirt!
Even if this video completely sucked (it doesn't), I'd still give the like because of your t-shirt.
Love the Tshirt!
Hi John another entertaining and informative video. I am not sure if you have ever done this before. But I notice you use different nailers in your videos and this one is no exception. why do you have different ones, can the the larger on not take the smaller nails you put in the smaller brad nailer?
One is an 18 gauge brad nailer and the other is a 23 gauge pin nailer.
You make it look so easy
Brilliant video mate. Love the detailed stuff
Awesome video. Thank you
That's some good wood working right there

Nice and simple construction, and almost a shame to paint it 😉 Thanks for sharing 👍👍
Another awesome video thanks man hello from California
Really enjoy your videos...Very informative. Thank you.
LOVE THE SHIRT!!!!!!!
absolutely LOVE the T-Shirt!
great idea for custom sized doors.
LOVE the shirt!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Best shirt ever 100%
This was very handy. I will definitely be adding a few of these to my to do list and just at the right time. Thanks for sharing :)
cool project and I love the t-shirt

Love your videos. So ingenious how you use plywood.
Great video. All of your videos are great. Keep it up.
The door looks very nice! Thanks.
Admirable video!
Really thanks for making this video you don't know you save how many dollars of people (Great Job)

Great job John. I know doors are your speciality. I guess layout and measurements are critical so you end up with a true and plumb door top to bottom.
I LIKE THAT SHIRT !!! ☺ I don't care about the door coz I already bought a knotted pine .
Great Video! Think I may try this on some large cabinet/storage closets.
