I like the way these 3 guys pause the video to discuss the video. Some other sidemen just talk through the video and occasionally makes it confusing.
Sometimes it’s the editors editing*
Yeah i like when the video is paused every 6.4 seconds. My favorite.
@@serbia4823 This really isn't the place to watch the video, but more the reaction of the people. Else, what's the difference between you watching a video and them watching?
@@serbia4823 it's literally a reaction video lmao pausing is the point of it, if you don't want any pauses just watch the vid lmao
It's annoying when the Sidemen barely say anything and just do basic reactions like "jeez" or "what?". At that point I'd rather just watch the video by itself. I like it when they actually have something to say and they have to pause it to have a conversation, but I get that not every video they react to is gonna create that type of discussion.

For anyone wondering how ice was kept cold before freezers, ice would be harvested in the winter (or summer depending in where they lived) and stored in stone rooms beneath the ground where it would be cold enough to stay frozen through out the summer (or winter).

12:17 To answer Harry's question. In ancient times people used to study different subjects, but also had similair vocations as us. Intelligent individuals might become philosophers, shamans, astronomers, statesmen, writers, doctors, generals and businessmen amongst others
Vast majority of people were just farmers and for those that weren't a large percentage were probably traders
I think the counting tables were necessary because back then, the numbers system weren't established yet. They knew an amount for what it is, which is an amount. The beads, based on their position, represent an amount of something. But now an amount can be easily represented by numbers. If you didn't have numbers, counting or calculating large values would probably be extremely hard because you're only working with amounts, not knowing what it looks like. So the beads made it easier because they represent the amounts. Just like how a number goes up with value, the beads on a counting tablet shift according to its value. The beads also have an advantage of being universally understood, whereas numbers could be represented differently in different languages.
the video about santur you saw was from Iran. children still learn this musical instrument. I have a friend who plays santur. we mainly hear santur music in classical music. it has a really calming sound and you usually don't get bored of listening to it. that traditional calculator still exists in Iran and it is used to store the numbers in an easier way, so your concentration goes fully on calculating. I think you should do a sidemen video about that mathematical board.
Surprisingly enough Same for India!
My dad actually has a santur at his house, such a great sounding instrument

How have Harry and vik never heard of the whole milk man thing? Or is it just a running American joke only?

it more of a mailman thing now, because there no more milkman
@@theendisnear2028 that is true. But they had to have at least heard it before though.

2:50 this was after the ice box and refrigerators. But my grandpa did this because he lived in the mountains and couldn't use those what he would do if find a small cave that led no where and he would build a wood structure to cover the opening and fill the cave with saw dust and gaint blocks of ice to keep his food cool during the summer in the mountains. This moment in the video reminded me of that and just wanted to share

Fun fact - This video is more lengthier than the original video even though some objects are missing because it was the list of top 11 items
Underground pits with the constant underground temperature of 12 °C (54 °F) had been used since Roman times to help preserve ice collected during winter.[16] The temperature of the soil is held relatively constant year-round when taken below the frost line, located 0.9 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) below the surface, and varies from about 7 and 21 °C (45 and 70 °F) depending on the region.[17] Prior to the convenience of having refrigeration inside the home, cold storage systems would often be located underground in the form of a pit. These pits would be deep enough to provide thorough insulation and also to deter animals from intruding on the perishable items within. Early examples used straw and sawdust compacted along the sides of ice to provide further insulation and to slow the ice melting process
Fun fact about the sundials: The Maya were so obsessed with astronomy and the sundial, they made a calendar that was almost as accurate as our current one, off by about 4 decimal points. They even had temples that could signify when an equinox occurred due to the position they were built!
Wow
As a Malayali, I can confirm that the urumi is dangerous
I think these three are my favourite trio on this channel
For 12:40 back in those times, most energy and brain was used for agriculture and meat gathering because it would take such a long time.
And what we know today is the cumulative knowledge of all this generations and the knowledge gathered. Back then knowledge gathered also couldn't be shared with more than a clan worth of people too.

She massacred ‘Kerala’. Damn.
Could u imagine being from there and your dad bein like "dont make me get the belt!" 😬😱
I know its a joke, dont r/whoosh me..
But as a person from kerala, I'll try to clarify it.. it is not a common household item like you're thinking. Its an ancient weapon called urumi which is just like a sword, but flexible, and is used only by those martial artists who train with it(that art form is called kalaripayattu which is the oldest martial arts in the world) and also common people might never even have seen it in person, or they have them at their home to use as belt. Lol
My grandparents have a fridge but it’s more of a underground place ish place it’s weird cuz from the outside the fridge(cold) room looks like a dome. Usually Eastern European towns have those types of fridges. They’re good cuz it gets colder inside the hotter the weather gets and in my grandparents place it’s pretty hot

The santoor is now more widely known as the hammered dulcimer, and is popular with Irish and Scottish folk musicians. I'm an Irish folk session musician and I sometimes see these being played in trad sessions.
Is it still played? Is it still the Indian one or is it an Iranian or Irish version?
Idk what it is about Simon saying cold places so seriously that was so funny. 😂
I remember growing up with Abacus classes in India and my parents debating whether I’m actually gonna learn something or not. I never went there. Now I wonder what life wouldve been with abacus.

As someone from the us midwest. Ive watched this many times. For the icebox ting came up. They used to cut the blocks from frozen lakes and pack them in an ice shed with sawdust to keep the ice frozen threw out the year.
Santur has not died out, it is still a very popular musical instrument in Iran and many Persians play it, much like the clip shown.
