Shira Haas is a giant among actors, it's so incredibly rare to see someone convey such a cavalcade of emotions and intent with minimal facial expressions. She's going to go far, and i'm looking forward to seeing her future roles.
Agree - she is a stunning actress with incredible facial expressions. The other actor that comes to mind is Jodie Comer in Killing Eve for her facial expressions !
The taste of freedom is amazingly felt in this series. I have never cried on a movie before. But I couldn't stop my tears flowing down when Esty was singing the second song in the audition. It was like she let out all her 19 years built up emotions in that one song ! Amazing acting by both Esty and Yanky !!
I felt so sorry for Yanky. He really wanted to make it work with Esty. Even was gonna go against everything he was taught but it wasn’t good enough. That made me cry like crazy. He was so naive & kind.
Carolynska S hi I have to disagree with you. He wasn’t happy that she wasn’t getting pregnant. She also treated him like shit. He was innocent. She always had this look of disgust towards him. And haha to the funny comment: kamoto Dragons teeth. A bit much but funny nonetheless.
I agree. He felt the pressure from his community to not produce children. I think they would have been happy to live an orthodox life in Isreal or away from that community.
This Netflix series spoke to me in different way. I grew up around the Hasidic Jewish community in borough park Brooklyn and I was always intrigued by them. I loved to people watch as a child and I always knew that they were completely different from me and my upbringing. My family was one of the very few Hispanic families in the area and were actually the only non Jewish families on our street. I always wanted to know what it was like to be them because we were never allowed to communicate with the Hasidic children around us. Imagine living in a neighborhood where you aren’t allowed to be friends with your neighbors. The only Jewish person my grandmother spoke to was the landlord when he came to get rent money and she lived on that street for 28 years. This story opened my eyes to things I was always so curious about.
My mother ran away with me like Esty did. When I visited my mother's family it was like traveling back in time. Living with them in the summer I can tell you that you weren't missing anything. I don't have many good things to say about them. Even the children weren't children. They always say that they aren't slaves anymore but they are. They're slaves to a radicalization of our religion, slaves to their community, and slaves to their past. It's really a sad life. I don't visit anymore. I'll never go back.
@Rivas I'd be so intrigued by them. Did you pick up the language? What type of games the kids were allowed to play?. I bet they were intrigued by you and your family as well. Cultural shocking at its finest.
Haha this is so comical. I went to school in Williamsburg. All my friends are from there. First of all, we were all taught music and half my class played piano professionally. We didn’t hang out in bars or got drunk but we went out to restaurants, bowling went on vacations and weren’t deprived of anything. This movie is so so wrong. It’s scary to think anyone would believe that. We may dress modestly but we shop designer clothes at the same malls u shop in. My friends are happily married and VERY much respected by their husbands. Orthodox Jewish men treat their wives like queens. The person this movie is based on came from an extremely broken family and unfortunately didn’t have the average orthodox Jewish upbringing. Anyone believing this garbage has to be delusional.

Esty (Shira, just wow!), Yanky (Amit, what a find!) and Moishe (Jeff, *applauds) made me cry laugh uneasy emphatic and more ugh it was an incredibly moving watch! Kudos to the makers of this series x
Great job on this. Four episodes not enough, but I understand perhaps it was to keep to the integrity of the feel and rhythm of the story onscreen let's say. Esty and Yanky's performances deserve acclaim for sure. The best series- I've just truly enjoyed processing and (for lack of better term) - digesting in a long while. - after it ended, I only wanted to think about it a little more (which hadn't happened to me in so long with a series or film - and thank you for that. thanks to Stephen King for saying he was watching this series which brought my attention to it.)
Just watched the series, and was so sorry that no more episode. It is so complex story, about family and religion, history and tragedy, woman's unique war and love. And the actors are fenomenal ❤
I binge watched all the episodes in one evening. All the acting was great especially Esy and Yanky. The external pressures from family and community were mind numbing.

I really liked the series but I find it unfortunate that we don't have a lot of information on the future of characters in the series. One more episode would have been interesting for that (it's basically a mini series of 4 episodes).
Actually better not. I searched this author and her book after watching the show, and the idea is quite complicated and a little bit confusing for mainstream viewers.
Finishing Shtisel on Netflix and seeing Shira Haas as Ruchami, this miniseries set in New York City was very compelling and so interesting. I love each and every aspect about the story of Unorthodox :)
A truly extraordinary film, deeply moving and with great development of characters. It could be a universal story, for a soul who wishes to find herself.
I'm a Christian, but I found this movie so incredibly moving. I worked for a Christian-based vaginismus company, and SO MANY women had vaginismus due to rigid religious upbringing. Meaning, they were taught sex=bad, sex=wrong, but then when it came time to have it, their body fully rejected it entirely. Furthermore, also as an educated woman, this made me so emotional. No one (especially women) should not have the freedom--especially in America--to not seek an education. So very sad in so many ways.
I began getting intrigued by Ultra-Orthodoxy when I moved to London, I had never seen Hasidic people before. I then visited NY and twice I ended up in Boro Park and Williamsburg by coincidence. I have been waiting so long for someone to explain to me how this community works. I am now hooked to knowing as much as I can, I spend days reading and watching videos. The Satmar sect has my biggest interest though. Over my next trip to NY I will make sure that the trip to Williamsburg is planned and guided! Unorthodox and Deborah Feldman answered all my questions! Amazing work!

I was not married arranged but i got married very young... I am still shocked from the whole feeling this show left to me, i cried my eyes out especially on the last part. So she's is not even close a musician in real life? Although the music students seemed totally unreal and full of clichès, the series was nice to watch
Eva Sw My company Simon & Schuster published the book. The Brooklyn sections of the series are very accurate. The Berlin narrative is completely from imagination. I guess they had to make a more interesting story.
Music stands for emotion and freedom and expression and exploring and I can go on for hours so, it's completely legitimate that she chose to tell her own story through a musical lens, because I know the orthodox Jewish world up close and there are so many beautiful things and people and moments in it that people don't know or can't understand, but there are also things that cannot be defined properly using words, because there's something beyond articulating that's waiting to be discovered and music is the perfect tool to bring it to light so, I really, really don't understand why your criticism is so hostile...very strange comment. Very strange.
There excuse was that they didn't want to expose the authors life in Germany since she's a real person. My thing is BUT UMMM SHE WROTE A WHOLE BOOK ABOUT IT AND PUT HER OWN BUSINESS OUT THERE HERSELF ALREADY 🤷♀️
The series isn’t just unique but also incredibly well acted. Every scene feels like I am trough it myself. It is so educational. I never really knew much about the Jewish Communities in general before. I’m really sad that the scene where she got hair cut wasn’t mentioned because to me that was a very essential moment. I would loved to know how they felt about it and what they initial thought was creating that scene. But I honestly can’t complain!
This show was so compelling and unique and quite special.

I loved the movie and would love to see more episodes. I felt strongly other episodes. I had no idea it was filmed 100% in Berlin!
Excellent show 🙏🏻 It's very raw in the presentation of the character's emotion and silent fight and no Cliche -- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Shira Haas...amazing!
Absolutely stunning performances
Excellent!!!!!!!! Loved it from beginning to end
Acting was PHENOMENAL
I absolutely loved this program
This was the best short series for me in 2020.
Unorthodox is a great series. Wish there will be Season 2. 🥺 Greetings from Berlin. 😊
I am not that radical religious but i am religious... I am not Jewish but i believe in the same God, i don't understand Yiddish but i speak several languages and also a Greek Dialect... I was not married arranged but i got married very young... I am still shocked from the whole feeling this show left to me, i cried my eyes out especially on the last part. What an extraordinary work and story ❤️ became one of my favorite of all times!
They could've made this an hour long and I would've watched all of it
I can’t believe they didn’t shoot any of this in Brooklyn!? They got the sunlight just right it really fooled me!
I wish we got to see more into the characters more
So she's is not even close a musician in real life?
@@wotan10950 the core story is perfectly interesting to me...
הגר גדליוביץ' I’m so happy for you
There excuse was that they didn't want to expose the authors life in Germany since she's a real person. My thing is BUT UMMM SHE WROTE A WHOLE BOOK ABOUT IT AND PUT HER OWN BUSINESS OUT THERE HERSELF ALREADY 🤷♀️
I've been living in Williamsburg for many years and find the show very realistic. Also lived in Berlin when a child😁. Loved the show!
Don't know if anyone noticed, but it was the author Deborah Feldman at the parfume shop, while Esty was choosing a lipstick in Part 4. 😊🙃
So beautiful.
❤
Greetings from Germany.
