The Moody Blues’ music is as rich as their lyrics. I’ve been listening to them since I was 18 and 51 now. From cassette tape to iPhone, they’ve been with me the whole time. I’m a better person because of their music. Their message is of love and understanding, acceptance and balance, revelation and deep emotion - a nuanced life, full of wonder and amazement, pain and depression, hope and love.
Their 1969 album was titled “To Our Children’s, Children’s Children.” You basically said the name of the album when you tried to describe a passage in this song. It’s wonderful how the can convey such positive and far reaching messages in their songs.

The Moody Blues is/are (singular band/plural name) my favorite group (since 1971). You were surprised about the number of dislikes for the song. I have found that the Moodies do not get the respect that I feel they deserve. I don't understand it but, that is the way it is. In my opinion The Story In Your Eyes should be listened to with Procession as a lead in. You are on the right track to listen to full Moody Blues albums, that is the way to really appreciate them. Especially the classic seven albums (I would argue that the classic seven plus the next three are the core records for the Moody Blues). Next year will be half a century that I have been listening to them, countless hours, but well worth it!

There were seven Moody Blues albums in a row in my youth that I listened to with an almost religious devotion. All of my friends were Moody Blues fanatics too. I saw them in concert once and they were beyond great. I'm sorry I only saw them once. I always liked the fact their lyrics were optimistic, poetic and hopeful, tinged with a bit of sadness and propelled by magnificent music that at times was beautiful and melodic and other times was soaring, thrilling and spiritual. I know they've been popular with more than one generation and rightly so. Every generation starts out hopeful and idealistic and the real world intrudes. I think the key in life is not to get cynical, depressed or defeated when your idealism is sometimes diminished with a harsh reality. You just have to pick yourself up and keep going and do the best you can. We can all make some kind of a difference in some way, whether it's by being a good parent, a loyal friend, by being kind to a stranger and by not becoming a bitter asshole, which does no one any good. I'm glad you enjoy the Moody Blues so much. Daniel, you give me hope for this tired old world.

I only saw them live once, in the 80s when Long Distance Voyager came out; The Fixx opened for them! I wish I had seen them when Denny Laine was in the group (of course I would have only been 8 years old!), but I did enjoy hearing Justin in Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds"!

    • @jennd8935
      @jennd8935 3 года назад +1

When I was younger in age, and I'm talking waaaaaaaay back in '64, when I heard "Go Now", that was it; I was a fan of the Moody Blues. I'm glad Denny Lane left and that John and Justin joined. When "Nights in White Satin" hit the radio, I knew I had to hear the rest of the album (yeah, vinyl), and wow, I was then a 'hard core' Moody Blues fan. For the next 6 albums (not including "Days of Future Passed"), I liked just about every song they did.... after Seventh Sojourn, they seemed to change their style and headed off in a different direction, more into a "pop" direction which, to me, was not what I wanted from them, so, although I like some of the songs, I stopped buying their albums, except if they had a concert album. I did manage to see them 3 times in live concert, and they were fantastic live. Daniel, I do hope you do some of the older Moody Blues songs, I really think you would like them. Even if you don't 'react' to them, I truly believe you would enjoy them.

EGBDF did have a remastered release around 2000, but the vocals always had a somewhat distant quality intentionally.
I always interpreted the meaning of this song in the context of the counter-culture movement of the late '60s early '70s that The Moody Blues were embedded in. There was very much a feeling that even though progress had allowed the previous generation a great deal of wealth and power, it was also capable of robbing future generations by poisoning the planet and perpetuating inequality and conflict.

There were also Moody Blues haters back in the day. They claimed that their music was "overblown" and "pretentious." In truth, I can kind of see it in some of their stuff. But in order to be pretentious, one has to at least have aspirations of creating something great. One has to at least be willing to try, even when the result makes some people cringe. The Moody Blues were willing to wear their hearts on their sleeves, for better and for worse. And for that, I respect them.

I've always seen it as a two people whose marriage is ending (the curtain's gonna fall'). They are hoping that marriage continues, but 'the sunshine we've been waiting for, has turned to rain'. He's worried about their kids. I take 'the sound we make together is the music to the story in your eyes'. Is how he sees her eyes, at points in the relationship. If she looks at him angrily, they are yelling, if she looks at him lovingly, they are speaking sweety. Etc. As always, YMMV.

I've always said that The Story In Your Eyes is too short...it could go on for a few more minutes, and I'd love it more! This song is incredible live! Moodies lyrics generally speak of love & understanding. They are consummate 'hippies' & I think some people found that too preachy or not genuine - possibly some reason for the 'dislikes'. Personally, the message of love & hope is universal, and is always needed - hence why these guys are one of my top bands!

The Moody Blues have been in my top five favorite bands since Days of Future Past came out. Justin Hayward, along with being an excellent vocalist, is a criminally underrated guitar player. While he gives us tastes of his ability here and there, with a nice small solo on this song, you really have to hear him cut loose live in concert. The man can play! At one of the shows I attended, Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys) was in the 4th center, one row in front of me. After Justin tore up a 5 minute solo during "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band", Brian gave them a standing ovation (as did we all!!) and said very loudly to his friend, "Now THAT's rock and roll! That's how you play rock guitar!"

Might be the age of the lyric video by the fan and how the audio was taken from the source and/or uploaded onto RUclips. There was a remastered release from around 2007 though.
Further thoughts about the context of the song/album: by 1971, "flower power" was on the wane and cynicism was beginning to creep in. A lot of the album feels bittersweet, but still with a hint of hope.

Thanks for the reaction. Great album. The first song on their albums is kinda like an intro alot of times. On this one "Procession" is the intro to "The Story in Your Eyes". The song stands on it's own but their kinda one song. And your right about doing the entire album. Moody Blues albums at least back then where all kinda tied together. I know it's alot of work but why not do the whole album. Do your little breaks like you do. But after shooting it split it up as a playlist? Just seems like that would be the best way for YT. Thanks. By the way Beatles, these guy's, the Who, Led Zeppelin where all big big ABBA fans. You should read up on them.

How can anyone not like this song? Such a great song. I had the privilege of seeing The Moody Blues live some years ago. They were great. I also saw Paul McCartney live twice in that same week. It was a fantastic week of music. And I think Justin Hayward is underrated as a guitarist.

Daniel, you remind me of one of my buddies who hopped in my Chevy Nova and headed to Madison, Wisconsin back in the 70's to see the Moody Blues. Also Jethro Tull (Tull) and Rush were in that same period at the Dane County Coliseum. Jam packed shows and they nailed every song, note for note. You know great Rock music.

Played this song with my cover band back around 1990. I had loved the fuzz guitar lines since the record first came out, and had wanted to do the song with a band since my first band. It only took (about) 20 years to get to play it. Worth the wait; it was an exciting song to perform live.

You have to pay attention to any songs recorded during this era. They were often done to 2 pressings; Mono and Stereo. Stereo record players were quite a bit more expensive at one point when vacuum tubes were needed and before transistors were invented and incorporated and available for home use. Mono had the total signal going to both channels if you had a stereo and bought a Mono recording. Stay safe...be well...

It would have been better if you played "Procession" first which I think is the beginning of this song. They should be played together. "Question" is one of their best songs. They usually end their concerts with it or save it for the encore. The first time I saw them was at the Jones Beach Amphitheater on Long Island. I've seen them at least a half dozen times up to about 5 yrs ago and I think the band is still together. Maybe they would even be touring if it wasn't for the China virus.

Most people don't get this song. To me, it is one of their best. I saw them in concert with a full orchestra behind them, it is unforgettable, I wish I could go back there again. Much of early rock was messaged with hopes to change the world, the sad part is most of those songs still apply today. Funny how things change but stay the same.

Thank you Daniel. Your deep analyses is refreshing. The whole album is awesome, I use to watch them at the Filmore East in NY. Dropped by the theater early that day, and the doors were open, I wandered in. they invited me to stay and watch them rehearse. They were all nice guys.visiting the City doing gigs. Their sound was unique. Long before Stairway to Heaven, the Moody Blues were jumping from melodic, into Rock. There was no other sound like theirs. The sixties was a time of change.
In New York radio, in the '60s Cuts from Days of Future Past, were used aa Segway bumper music by the station programers. The albums big hit, Nights in White Satin broke the rules of the top ten AM stations, It was too long and interrupted the pacing, That being said, it was still given airtime. In the late sixties, the AM billboard top ten was being replaced by the FM. Album stations. AM transistor radios still were the most popular form of portable listening.
I would like to suggest you listen to A Salty Dog, by a group contemporary with the Moody Blues, I am referring to, Procol Harum. You might know them from their super hit, Whiter Shade of Pale. As great as it was, the rest of their music was impressive too. You might enjoy it.

I saw the Moody Blues in Atlantic City w/my Dad (He lived across the channel from A.C. in Brigantine at the time). Great concert. Funny moment though, when they played "Question" and they came to the pregnant pause...the entire audience stays silent during the pause...except my Dad, who has never heard the song before. I said, "Wait for it," prompting the woman sitting next to me to burst out laughing.
I took him to visit my brother a couple of weeks ago and we're on the Atlantic City Expressway and I have a Moody Blues CD in the stereo. He points to the radio and asks, "Who is singing?" I said, "The Moody Blues. We saw them at the Trump Taj Majal." He says, "Yeah, that's right." My dad's 83. 🤷‍♂️
