    Beau Brummels. Sad Little Girl. My husband was a musician in the 70’s. He and his brother would record in his studio in the basement. Sad little girl was a cover they did. Made me cry. I’ll never forget it. I have their reel to reel recording on CD now. 😀

    LOVE the Easybeats!!! They had 3 albums and several singles, all great, when still in Australia, before getting to the UK and Friday on my Mind 😉
    Huge fan of Donovan too, you're right, that Live album is fantastic!

    In the early 80s "The Grassroots" played at a dance bar I attended (frequently) and when they started playing "Midnight Confessions" I let out such a squall that it brought a smile to the singer's face.Love your show Matt.👍

    I have found that no matter the storage approach, there will always be logistic issues when actively buying more albums and trying to retain an alphabetized collection.

    • @multiverser9585
      @multiverser9585 4 месяца назад

      I know it sounds like a crazy idea, but I've been thinking of re-shelving all my records and instead of the order being alphabetical by artist name, I would order them by release date. Sometimes I get nostalgic for the sounds of a specific year or timeframe in history. I haven't committed to doing this yet, but I'm considering it. Anyone have any thoughts about it? Up to now, I've always done alpha by artist name.

    • @shyman99
      @shyman99 4 месяца назад

      @@multiverser9585 - It would reduce the moving around of albums but not completely eliminate it because I'm sure you buy albums with old release dates. The biggest problem with your idea would be the difficulty of remembering the release date to be able to quickly locate an album. I would think it would require creating a spreadsheet with the release date of an album because it would be hard to remember all of them offhand. Unless all of your listening is based on timeframes, I would stick with the alphabet.

    Yeahhhh... like this! Always wanted know what Matt has in there! Some interesting things. It's not a massive collection, but exhaustive collections are just, well, exhausting. Also, I don't know how you would feel about this, but novelty tunes were very popular in the 60s. This was mostly with us kids and our parents. The Beatles Beat by Odeon - an import that my brother was able to find in a record store in the late 70's and passed it down to me - the All Music Guide has a very positive review on it. I was also able to find a copy of the Boston Tea Party LP back in the 80s. Cilla Black only had one U.S. album in the 60's - "Is It Love" on Capitol. I was fortunate to find a copy of that album in the racks as well. One of the comments talks about the Box Tops' gatefold LP "Non Stop" which I was able to pick up. For my non-Beatles/Stones/Who LPs, I never went out of my way to find specific titles for my modest 60s collection - I only picked up whatever I could find in used record stores and thrift shops from the early 80's to the early 90's.

    Matt, I loved this episode, especially as it was a trip down memory lane going through the new releases at the local record store. For those still acquiring vinyl, '67 was when albums, specifically stereo albums, took over from 45s. You showed the first Blues Magoos (mercury) and HP Lovecraft (Philips) albums which I bought in mono only to find that the record inside was stereo. The Mercury/Philips/Smash (Left Banke's first album as well)/ ... stopped making mono records and just put stereo copies inside the sleeve. Then the companies phased out mono as stereo records listed for a dollar more ($3.98 versus $2.98) so the record companies effectively raised prices by 33%. I love the first Critters album, but the army kept depleting the group, so, for me, the next albums were not up to the standard of the first. And in 1991 Sundazed put out a live CD by HP Lovecraft (May 11, 1968) which is superb as the band could play the studio live and extremely well. May I request the Beau Brummels, HP Lovecraft, & Electric Prunes (whom I saw live circa 2003 when I talked to bassist Mark Tulin who said that the band only really made(the first) two albums - producer Dave Hassinger owned the band's name and recorded what he, not the band, wanted including Mass).

There were so many changes in music during that decade. i liked everything from early teen idols like tommy Sands and brian hyland many others. To mid 60s groups like grass roots or gary puckett who like you said had many hits but for many years didn't get appreciated really many still touring i met peter noone and tommy james last year so still can catch some of them. Nice collection and some really rare titles there. Was that a genuine, original Butcher cover Yesterday and Today? Sandy Bull was a surprise since you rarely go back to the Folk Revival, and he was a lesser known Vanguard guy. I like that you get all of even a one or two hit group's albums; the later ones nobody knows can be very interesting. Please do the Beau Brummels, who were all the rage along with the zombies in late '64 then vanished (zombies would be great with their 1969 comeback (even though they had already broken up). I'm glad you appreciate the Fifth Dimension, whose Magic Garden is a pop masterpiece that failed to sell but now has a following. (they are totally ignored by the critics, who didn't know what to do with them). I remember Kites Are Fun by the Free Design, who were probably too jazzy for AM radio. I have one 1970s revolving wire record rack, 7 foot tall, 3 sides supporting 4 flights of albums. Alas the remainder of my remaining collection is stacked against walls on the floor in 2 rooms. Even in my heyday before I sold so many, I had nowhere near your epic range. You actually have a record shop in your house, Matt.

She was on my favorite old western Haven Gun Will Travel. The Easybeats Wanda and Young later formed Flash N the Pan. My ex wife loved Flash N the Pan. When I think Grass Roots? I think Creed Bratton. Later on the office. I have a ton of OG ye ye albums to include Hardy, Gall, Gainsbourg and Bardot. I don’t speak a word of French but I love the albums. Looking forward to part 2.

    This just might be my favorite video of yours Matt, which is really saying something. I could write for days with comments about your awesome 60's lp collection, so I won't get started. Since you are from the Milwaukee area, I wondered if you are familiar with a fine 60's rock band called the Robbs who had a real pop gem of a single called Race With the Wind which got to # 16 on Chicago's WLS Silver Dollar Survey of July 1st '66? Anyway, can't wait for part 2!

    Terrific collection, Matt! Shout out to four of the bands you mentioned that I would LOVE to see band histories of -- the Easybeats, the 5th Dimension, the Grassroots, and Guess Who. (Also, possibly Francois Hardy. However, while I don't want to offend anyone, I have to admit that I've never been fond of Grateful Dead.) Looking forward to part 2!

    What a diverse collection. Definitely covers all genres of the '60's. When you talked about Hendrix not being a great vocalist it dawned on me, probably because you had just showed the "Guess Who" albums, how much I love Burton Cummings' voice and their fairly sophisticated compositions & jazz- flavored music. Very unique band. Lots of great ones in that A-H collection & quite a few I've yet to hear. Looking forward to your future installments!

    A lot of bands at the time in one way or another tried to catch up with "Pepper".
    But "Dolls House" is one of the albums (along with "Sorrow") that outperforms pepper in my humble opinion.
    And overshadows "Crimson King" with ease anyway.

    I was quite delighted that you own some Tim Buckley albums. I would have thought you owned the "Dream Letter: Live In London 1968" album. Essential Tim Buckley, (maybe the best of all his albums) as it captures him in the beginning stages of his "Happy/Sad - Blue Afternoon" period.
    (PS: I also thought you would have owned the Carpenters' "Offering" album, - sandwiched between the Glen Campbells and Chad and Jeremys - since you've expressed your love of Bacharach, early Bee Gees, and the Association. I know that Richard and Karen were influenced by those guys, as well as the Beatles and Beach Boys.)

    Hi Matt - thanks for this video! very, very interesting!! I've got a "healthy" LaserDisc collection, which includes all of the Beatles LDs you showed, plus LET IT BE - yup, the latter's quality pales in comparison to Peter Jackson's GET BACK (and will also look inferior to the upcoming overhauled LET IT BE), but, my LET IT BE copy on LD has served me well over the past 42 years! maybe 15 years ago, I copied it to DVD-Rs for myself and a few friends, in case either of my Pioneer LaserDisc players died; I got rid of my original LaserDisc player (it still worked fine, but, since the sound was analog, I decided to save some space and lose it), but, the better second player (with digital sound) is still working perfectly! (I rarely use it, though) Anyhow, I digress! Thank you for the tour through your vinyl collection and I am looking forward to seeing the next part(s) !! Mike

    Those washers on the screws on your album racks are known as "dress washers". They look exactly like the washers used on the rear panels of Fender guitar amplifiers. I have a couple of old Fender amps that were missing some of the dress washers, and was happy to find exact replacements at the Home Depot.

    I was slightly surprised when you were thumbing through the F section that no mention was made of Fairport Convention or Fotheringay. The second FC album What We Did On Our Holidays is fantastic. The original lineup was gone by 1970. Fotheringay had Sandy Denny and Trevor Lucas, both brilliant singers. And FC had my hero Richard Thompson even though he couldn’t sing in those days.
    On the positive side, no Emerson Lake and Palmer. Since you ended at H we didn’t get to the Incredible String Band.

    As always, it’s fascinating for me as a Brit to hear about groups that meant nothing or very little to us this side of the pond. The Spencer Davis Group are certainly worth exploring (the first band I ever saw live, in 1966) - looks like you have The Second Album there, which is so varied and introduced me to some new genres. Their first LP is more bluesy. By the way, those ‘washers’ are known as cups!
