    • @MatsThyWit
      @MatsThyWit 3 года назад +4

      They both had good chemistry. Letterman was better at leaning into the awkward banter. Carson was a little too old school in his comedy sensibilities, he couldn't help winking at the audience to let them know it was a joke. Letterman let the audience buy into the idea that Charles Grodin hated him. He seemed to like being a punching bag for Grodin.

    • @lynnturman8157
      @lynnturman8157 3 года назад +2

      I agree. The truth is Grodin's schtick unnerved Johnny. You can tell Johnny's not enjoying it because he doesn't laugh much with Grodin. With guests he finds funny, he laughs his ass off.

    • @watchman1178
      @watchman1178 3 года назад +2

      @@MatsThyWit Yeah, you nailed it. This kind of irreverent comedy began around the time SNL got started. Carson understood exactly what Grodin was doing, but it still made him a little uncomfortable because he wasn't used to it. Letterman, OTOH, knew all-too-well the art of irreverent comedy.
      That being said, I liked Grodin's appearances on Johnny's shows more than the one's with Dave. Johnny's discomfort was hilarious, as were most of his counter punches.
