A building is briefly defined as a structure with a roof and walls, standing more or less permanently in one place, such as a house or factory. Most often than not Airports are not included when classifying building because their construction cost include, runways which are not considered as buildings, so with that out of the ways lets take a look at Africa’s expensive building.
The Djamaa el Djazair Mosque also known as the Great Mosque of Algiers is located in Algier, The capital and largest city of Algeria is currently the largest and most expensive building in Africa. It houses the world's tallest minaret and is the third-largest mosque in the world after the Great Mosque of Mecca and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi of Medina in Saudi Arabia.
The construction of the mosque began in August 2012 after the Algerian government's contract, for over 1 billion euros,(2 billion dollars to be exact) was won by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation. The design was done by German architects KSP Juergen Engel Architekten and engineers Krebs und Kiefer International. The mosque faced construction delays owing to budgetary concerns due to the falling prices of oil. Around 2,300 workers from China, Algeria and other African countries were deployed to work on the project. The Project was completed in April 2019. The construction of the mosque was seen by many to serve as a symbol of the reign of long-serving president Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
The mosque sits on a site covering 400,000 m2 and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The prayer hall has a capacity of 37,000 worshippers, while the structure including the compound can house up to 120,000 worshippers and has parking space for 7,000 cars. The complex also houses a Koranic school, a park, a library, staff housing area, a fire station, a museum of Islamic art, and a research centre on the history of Algeria.
The mosque also has a 265 m tall minaret, which makes it the current tallest building in Africa. It also houses an observation deck atop the minaret, which has 37 floors. The mosque is designed to withstand an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 and the structure has been specially processed to resist corrosion. The main prayer hall has 618 octagonal columns serving as support pillars and 6 km (3.7 mi) of calligraphic writing engraved with a laser system. The dome of the prayer hall has a diameter of 50 m and rises to a height of 70 m.
According to several sources, the Great Mosque of Algiers is followed by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt with a cost of about 220 million dollars. While the Great Mosque of Djina might be the most expensibe building in Africa, it is no where near the most expensive building in the world which is the Abraj Al Bait in Mecca and cost 15 billion to construct.
The future of exortic and expensive buildings in Africa is very bring as there are currently 3 three African countries, Kenya, Morocco and Egypt that are in the race of constructing Africa’s tallest and most beautiful building. These building upon completion will be of world class standard and will have the capacity to compete with buildings in The US, China and Japan.

As Algerian I find this project a complete waste of money! They could've build hospitals and oil refineries instead of importing fuel from somewhere else! Invest in tourism and railway projects that are still going for years and have not been completed yet! Our country is already full of mosques literally in every corner!! We want to divert our economy and decrease dependence on oil and natural gas!!
