Another easy cooking can is a tuna can with cardboard box cut same depth. Wind it tight holding the cardboard drop it into can. It must be twisted tight. Melt unscented candles and pour into can . Can be used candles bought at garage sales. It will light for weeks. If you put a clay pot on it upside down,you can get heat or use it to cook or light.
A better way to make this would be the same but instead of alchohol, rub vasaline into the cotton balls until they are all completely saturated, then load them into your can. It will have the same amount of heat and light, but will burn way longer, and wont evaporate when not lit. You can also put foil over the top and control the amount of flame by putting different size holes in the foil.

You can also buy sterno by the case at Costco...alcohol in a gel medium. With a tight fitting lid. Might be cheaper per ounce than making your own, but not sure.
U know that this is still a great idea! I used this method when I was living homeless in my tent to keep warm. It truly works. I used toilet paper cuz I didn't have cotton balls but all the same. I ran out of alcohol a bunch though.
If lights went out could definitely do this set up in a grill and place pots and pans on grill racks directly over fire could make entire meals just like a stovetop

It’s very different in a state that receives very little snow but then a very extreme weather event occurs which people (some) are not prepared to even survive. We’ve had temperatures below zero before but nothing like what we experienced. Many people died.

Cup full of oil + the cotton ball with a gentle 2 fingers twist at the end to make a wick can last much longer and create heat to be used for different purposes. Thanks for the tip about the dirt. A clay pot full of oil with the cotton ball with a twisted wick at the end is also very useful. The clay can resist the intensity of the flame and the heat.
Back in 2012 was frozen in the house. The whole town was shut down for a couple weeks. Live in a really old house and the house is not insulated and struggle with smaller heaters or ac's as the case maybe. But when everything was down was able to heat rooms and keep pipes from freezing with this method.

Also, if you need to buy the rubbing alcohol, get the 90% stuff instead of the 70% stuff -- it's more efficient. Or you could go to a paint/hardware store and get denatured alcohol which should burn with very, very little smoke. As for burn time, with that amount of alcohol assume a 4-5 hour continuous burn. If you're really curious, build one yourself and time it.
I made this.I used cat litter since it was available..works well!!Instead of the large cans of fruit I bought a nice metal utensil holder for $4.00 it is more sturdy also.

He wanted to show me how to use one and I have used it since, BUT this is more stable! Thanks for sharing (I know, this is 5 years later that I am adding this)
Ur the smartest I found regarding chaffing fuel, camping stoves or sternos online, but ur the smartest. Btw 4 guyz who doesn't know yet, chaffing fuel can give u 5 hours of cooking.

My dad used to do something similar to this back in the 70s and 80s using the old metal coffee cans and a roll of toilet paper. Didn't have to use dirt or a 2nd can because the toilet paper soaked up the alcohol so well and was much more solid than cotton balls. Used it in our tree stands deer hunting for heat

I live in Australia. In mostly temperate climate but winter can go from -4c to +30c. Minus four is nasty. no way to acclimatise. Heavy moisture in air means fires don't draw. Kerosene heaters are G8. Economical, heat one room at a time then slightly open doors to next living space and heat that room and so on. Give fast immediate warmth but do need air ventilation to prevent suffocating. Can cook on them. A full tank runs for 8 hrs on low. Can be found in camping stores. Also camping stores have butane gas heaters too. They work well but I don't use due to too many leftover canisters going to landfill. Also. A big pot of water brought to boil, turned off and left on stove puts out heat to keep a room warm. Reboil when cold. I experiment to save cash. Good luck. Thinking of you as you are about to enter winter. God Bless.
Get cans of corned beef hash and cook with eggs if you like and/or add some veggies of your choice. When the SHTF big time, slice spam and sautee 'til crispy ... ditto canned corned beef.
I have a tiny wood stove in my camper that has a 2" flue and hard to get going because there's low draft. Now I have an awesome source for it. Plus it will be safely contained.

This mini stove is pretty awesome! It reminds me of chafing dish fuel gel, which I used to cook when there was a power outage. And I felt as thrilled as you did cooking your eggs 😋 The only adjustment I would do is add aluminum foil (if it was available) to keep it in place instead of the dirt. I'm sure that would give it the the right amount of tension to hold it in place. Thank you for sharing! You made it super simple! This is absolutely one of the easiest ways to cook in an emergency. And I like the fact that it can be reused. That's the best part! You are very resourceful. THE ONLY SAFE WAY TO USE THE OVEN, IS WITHIN WHAT IT IS DESIGNED FOR. No alternative nothing in the oven inside a house. 🌻🍀 Look up solar oven, can be build at home, or purchased, for outdoor use, you can even bake a turkey in it, if you have enough daylight, like in the summer. A solar oven works even in the snow, in the midst of winter, as long as you have plenty of sun shine.

Since I did not have a lot of cotton balls it lasted only 30 mins, but it was relaxing to watch it and I felt that I had achieved something. I did not use new cottonballs, but used some old cotton from a blanket my dog had torn up and it was suitable.

I just bought a few XXLarge hot water bottles on Amazon. I will just heat the water and rotate the same water to keep warm. It certainly can't hurt.

I would think wetting them good would be enough. Don't know about time frame, but it should last quite a while.

Get cans of corned beef hash and cook with eggs if you like and/or add some veggies of your choice. When the SHTF big time, slice spam and sautee 'til crispy ... ditto canned corned beef.

I have a tiny wood stove in my camper that has a 2" flue and hard to get going because there's low draft.
Now I have an awesome source for it.
Plus it will be safely contained.
I’m curious how long they burn for… Do you know you can just bring Crisco too and it last for a really long time?
The cast iron frying pan was a good to use because of weight balancing, heat distribution and it holds the heat better.
Copper bottom pans work just as well as iron cast!
And the flame doesn't hurt cast iron. Those pans are beasts in the kitchen and out in the wild when camping.

Thank You. We were in dire straights for a few weeks last winter here in Texas and many of us were I'll prepared this would have perhaps saved a great many of us the distress we were under. Making some of these to keep in my prepper kit!
This mini stove is pretty awesome! It reminds me of chafing dish fuel gel, which I used to cook when there was a power outage. And I felt as thrilled as you did cooking your eggs 😋
The only adjustment I would do is add aluminum foil (if it was available) to keep it in place instead of the dirt. I'm sure that would give it the the right amount of tension to hold it in place.

🌺🌸 Things that cook longer are done under normal circumstances, when the lights are out, you conserve whatever little alternative energy and resources you happen to have.
THE ONLY SAFE WAY TO USE THE OVEN, IS WITHIN WHAT IT IS DESIGNED FOR. No alternative nothing in the oven inside a house.
🌻🍀 Look up solar oven, can be build at home, or purchased, for outdoor use, you can even bake a turkey in it, if you have enough daylight, like in the summer. A solar oven works even in the snow, in the midst of winter, as long as you have plenty of sun shine.
@@heidimisfeldt5685 I have one and on a sunny day it will get to 350 degrees even 380. I cook a package of chicken leg quarters in my dutch oven in it for my dogs all the time. Have even baked cookies and brownies in it.
Baking soda can has a plastic lid, And can be put on once the can cools.
Or the smaller cans from freeze dried long term foods (the one smaller than the #10 can)
This will be perfect for when the dark winter comes with no electricity for heat or cooking food 💯

Thank you. I am doing this tonight. You are a lifesaver, God bless you. Brillant person. So. I went to home depot and bought sand and then used two cans I had cooked with, and it worked so easily. Since I did not have a lot of cotton balls it lasted only 30 mins, but it was relaxing to watch it and I felt that I had achieved something. I did not use new cottonballs, but used some old cotton from a blanket my dog had torn up and it was suitable.

you can also use perlite instead of cotton. Perlite can be found in lawn and garden centers, etc.
