I have one rental property and I haven't raised the rent for ten years. That said if there is any move to not allow me to sell my property when I decide, or if I can't give it to my son when the time comes, I'm out straight away. I've always endeavoured to fix a problem within 48 hours, but over the last 20 years I've had the house totally recked on two occasions, not enough focus on bad tenants.

Pointless talking about current political parties' offerings. Seems like all Western democracies are governed by outside agencies and those that fund them. Most of the west has homeless people yet most of the west has housing stock falling into disrepair outside of the major conurbations. It is a matter of will that the situation is thus. Not the will of the voters but rather the will of our rulers, those who sit above governments and don't give two hoots for we human beings.

I don’t think apartments get a bad wrap because of the build quality here. I think culturally we’ve lived with gardens and space and what family does not want that for their children? Anyone wanting a family definitely wants a garden and space, and shouldn’t it be achievable for the families that have 2 parents out working? So not only do we have children growing up homeless or in cramped apartments, but the children are also growing up without their parents as they’re holding down jobs! The government have made an absolute mess of the economy and are not serving anyone but themselves!

Immigration per capita is the highest in Ireland. The lack of properties available is the greatest in Ireland. The sheer corruption in politics surely is highest in Ireland.
While I agree with Western Europe having similar problems, this current situation in Ireland is absolutely the worst. Period.
I've been around for 5 decades and never ever have I experienced anything like this. This is insanity.

@@harryireland1935 I absolutely agree. If the Americans were to take the same percentage of asylum seekers that Ireland has allowed it would amount to 9 million. The USA has taken in 2.5 million since 2021 and they’re overwhelmed. My point was to highlight the lock step policies that we’re seeing rolled out throughout the West. Be in immigration, hate speech laws, mass homelessness etc. Ireland always has to go harder and deeper than any other nation. Look at how we embraced the restrictive and most backward elements of Catholicism with vigor

Where is all the demand coming from? Is it the huge families we are having? Has inviting in the world, keeping wages down and property demand(prices) up, been working out for the native people anywhere it has been tried? Anyone not talking about this as the central factor, which all the parties are in lock-step about across decades, is utterly disingenuous. The policy makers are not fools; infer their motives from actions, not words.

We have walkers in Ireland plenty nurses, But unfortunately we have too many agencies.
As the HSE will not hire directly to save cost, they hire agency workers to eliminate any responsibility towards their staff.
And where do the unions stand on this nowhere to paid off?

Id like to leave my real opinions here but the chilling effect of the proposed anti speech law has me fearful of yhe garda showing up at my door.
We dont have many constitutional barriers against bad policing here, best not gain the attention of that pack of hyenas.
We have many problems in Eire, we have class based problems, policing problems, healthcare problems, housing problems, judicial problems, inflation problems, wage depression problems, immigration problems. We have the lot, and like that FG politicianslbssid a few weeks back "people need to understand 70% of our laws are made abroad"
Wish i could admit to being less than half needed and still have a job. Smh.

My opinion is government should stop all unnecessary building or push it down the line that will free up as many builders. Once they start building something those builders become public sector for that build and so take away from the private sector. This would have to be done nationwide so as not to have favourites. Building houses should be only priority for next few years. No one can get a builder at moment

If this is the collective composition or average psyche of Irish people, you're in trouble.
Politicians are your servants but you seem to have forgotten that. When you complain, its as if you're begging them politicians to do you a favour.
Continuing to be taken in by manufactured consent, and having such low energy conversations or lack of realisation that politicians are your servants, you will get what's coming to you.

It's unhelpful to frame it as a housing crisis, it's a land use problem. Ask any experienced backpacker to show you that you dont need bricks and mortar to have a warm, safe night's sleep. We have one of the lowest population densities in Europe, the country is moslty grass. Filling these fields with yurts would have negligible externalities compared to the quiet suffering people are enduring.
Yes, I'm advocating favelas. Trust people to not shit everywhere and screw the optics of it.
