    As an owner of an equally rare Mazda 323 from 1989, I really appreciate seeing these old, japanese cars today. A lot of them was used as disposable cars because they were cheap.

    I had a 1992 Corolla DX. Loved the car. Had 273,000 miles on it. Wish I never sold it. Do your maintenance, oil changes and timing belts and it runs forever

    I would love to have a car like this. No options, no unnecessary complication, rather modern engine being a 16 valve, good gas mileage and power I imagine, but combined with the reliability and simplicity of a carburetor and distributor.
    I am surprised that an american car from the late 80s came without a passenger mirror. Here in Europe that was pretty much mandated everywhere by that point.

    • @tynewlin
      @tynewlin 3 года назад +1

      Wasn't required here in the U.S. until sometime around the mid-nineties.
      My 93 Ford Festiva doesn't have the optional passenger-side mirror.
      Base level, no frills or features.
      By 92 they were all fuel injected and had gained a fifth forward gear, unless you optioned for the horrendous automatic that just ruins the fun of the car.

    You just don't see cars like that in the UK as our climate does wonders for rust getting a hold of the bodywork. I love a simple, basic car.

    • @Banom7a

      likewise in the Northeastern US, those salt will kill the bodywork first before the engine die.

    Thanks, these are solid units. I have the Alltrac 4wd wagon version of this and its unstopable 300,000 kms original clutch radiator and paint. As the SR5 model though it gets EFI, Electric windows, Glass Sunroof, mirrors, AC, Full upholstry, Sports seats etcl Centre Diff lock and clutch foot rest. All the mod cons you need. Corollas don't need to be basic to be reliable!

  • @fabulousprofound
    @fabulousprofound 3 года назад

    Back then a right hand mirror was a $90 option. Manual antenna was an extra too. Top spec models were EFI. Everything lower than that were carbureted. When I turned 16 my driving school had these and Tercels to learn on, so this is a blast from the past for me. Cockroaches and Corollas will still be around when we are all gone… and maybe my neighbor’s 1988 Camry LE, also one owner.

    @emehlhar 3 года назад +1

    I have the same model and year but in the LE trim. I got the extra passenger mirror, clock, defrost, cruise control (where that blank spot he showed), and velour seats but that's about it. Mine still runs fine. A testament to the quality of cars Toyota used to produce.

    • @moeschizlac
      @moeschizlac 2 года назад +1

      My mom had a 1989 Corolla DX and it had both mirrors, clock, rear window defrost, cup holders, heater and A/C. She passed it on to me when I was 18, but I sold it long ago. I'm 36 now. It is a very reliable car. I could have modded it, but there is only so much I can do with a carbureted vehicle.

    "Corolla DX" in Finland means the KE70 generation, the last of the rear drive Corollas. I have a feeling the importer ordered all the corollas in DX spec, because they had to come all the way from Japan back then and they didn't want to bother with special orders. You bought what was available and everything was a DX, so that's what you got.

    I own a 1989 Toyotota Coroll Dx which truly is a Gteat car. I have owned many different cars of which most were more expensive cars. of these cars the Toyota is the best made one. I bought the car for $3000 in 1999 and it has cost me less than that to maintain it's running condition. There arent many old cars that people offer to buy and mechanics praise for being for reliability. but this car is truly an exceptional car.
    btw. mine has a passenger side rear view mirror.

    That car has been driven sparingly. About 8,000 Miles a year. I have a 07 Corolla with 257,000 miles on it. I can't imagine how much mileage would have after 32 years with the amount of miles I put on it every year.

    DEFINITELY A GREAT WORKING MAN’S CAR ! Only reasoning for it was to get to work , moreso get life’s needs done. Maybe stop at the store, the bank . . Not like it’s gonna be a showcase vehicle or something ! NO , just gotta fulfill your basic needs: what cars were MEANT FOR. To be that great mechanical tool ! People have just overemphasized that too much

    “Probably just changed out the original tires”?? I doubt it. I don’t know of any tires that last over 200,000 miles and 32 years.

    • @GlamStacheessnostalgialounge
      @GlamStacheessnostalgialounge 3 года назад

      I mean not 200,000 miles but I was looking at cars a few years ago and found an old Lada and the seller made it a selling point "Still has the original tires it came with in 1982!" Like the car only had about 60,000 km and I believed that, but no way would I drive a car with tires that old.

    Have one 89 too EU spec 75hp 1.3 carb 2E
    - no fifth gear
    - no rev meter so
    - originally it had weird side spoilers
    - 3 door hatch which US never got due to poor sales of last gen hatch
    - luckily passenger door mirror it's a XL trim
    - sporty stripes :D
    - funky antenna
    so it means it's a basemodel no fancypants car like the japanese variant or even the 1.6 4a-fe nor even 4a-ge so it's a cold hatch
    but there is still some around but not alot like it used to be
    right now it had failed headgasket so I have to replace it
    I don't know if I want to return it into full original so it will be museum registered
    or modify it with jdm equivalent parts, glossy green and VW BBS rims after all repairs.
    or I could just aesthetically modify it with green wrap with new original paint inside since when done with those could be easily taken off after ten years because it isn't always sunny out here...

    Fun fact the Corollas had the best line-up with engine choices,, an 2E 1300cc 12 valve, an 5A similar to that one which is 1500cc 16v , a 4A which had 2 variants (identical to that engine also) that was the 1.6 16v with carb (and another 4AFE fuel injection ), then the iconic 7A 1800cc 16 valve engine , I had the 1300cc but a 5 door hatch 1997 model which was still carb fed.
    And if you were wondering where you got all of those…. Here in South Africa.
    Toyota is was and will always be number one seller here ☺️
