It goes to show how "right" the original engineering concept was that it remained fit for purpose for so long. I drove a couple in the 1970s in Australia. They drove with a feeling of "weight" on the road that most small cars of the era didn't have. They were great on the less than stellar roads of Australia at the time. Not fast, you never-the-less could maintain a respectable average speed over distances that are similar to those in the US. And they were surprisingly comfortable. I had one as my first car and I still miss it

Moving the signal lights into the bumper was inspired by US carmakers who realized there was an endless stream of big cash because any parking lot contact would destroy an expensive light fixture, when normally there would be zero damage.

@@loucostabile Yes of course. I just did it last night. I have a 1986 Nissan Sentra B11 here in Mexico. I like classic and old cars. Have an excellent Sunday Dennis.
The inclusion of the fire extinguisher is because the VW Beetle was widely used in Mexico as a taxi. The public passenger transport regulations specify that it is mandatory to have a fire extinguisher as basic equipment. At first the taxi drivers themselves modified their vehicles, but over time VW itself included this standard equipment for the convenience of its customers.

All the memories… My first car was a 1962 beetle with a fabric sunroof, and between my wife and I we subsequently owned a 1966, 1967, and finally a 1970 beetle before we bought our final Volkswagen which was a 1982 Jetta diesel.

This is wild Lou! Did they also sell the “new style” Beetle in Mexico when this was out in 2004? It reminds me of the Checker Marathon (a good car for you to review) that kept the same styling for many years!
Hi Agostino, As I understand they did sell this limited one in Mexico. Ahhh the Checker Marathon, yes, I remember them well :-) Stay tuned, as maybe one will show up in the future, Lou
I’ll second that wish for a Checker Marathon review, Lou. Wow, haven’t thought of that car in years. And make sure to invite your son, your editor, and maybe a friend to pile into the car with you and the driver. There will STILL be room to spare!
I did not know the old style Beetle was produced for so long. Interesting. My Mother had a yellow 1975. It sure would be neat to import one of these newer ones. Thanks for sharing Lou. Take care.
I may have my timeline wrong but believe VW produced this beetle model 1 since 1938, giving it a lifespan of over 65 years! Dennis has a real gem there and great piece of automotive history. Thanks for sharing this with your viewers Lou.

This is great !!! Amazing time capsule ;) '69 or so, Family buys a Beetle new. "Where's the '65 Chevelle ???" 'Dub was as fun to drive, maybe more and of course better on gas. new home owners and all ;) about a year later, i grad Jr high. Summer before HS, Bro, wife and i take a trip in this car from the SFO area to Disneyland, a gift to me ! Everything was so much fun, from the trip to the 'park'. ha, 81 i move and neighbor across the street has an orange beetle. Of course had to ask him about it soon as good. Mexico stamp in the engine sill frame. Story was, they won money at Reno and bought the car which became his daily driver. Poor guy's gone now but i believe the car is still on the property. Thanks for the memories, Lou :)
I admired the VW engine, especially its simplicity. Having no antifreeze, no water hoses, radiators, and pumps eliminated much of the headache of an IC engine of that period. I never owned one because frankly, they were just too slow, but I sure worked on a lot of them. VW introduced the Type 1 (Beetle) replacement in the 70’s, called the Rabbit in the US market, and it was a far superior car to the Type 1 by every measure, but the old Beetle was still king at trouble-free operation.

My daily driver from about 2002-2015 was a 1990 Mexican Beetle. Piled a ton of hard miles on it, drove it everywhere. Very reliable, durable fun and capable car.
Lou goes for his patented “exhaust note” shot and…well, ain’t nothin’ there. ;-) But such a cool car. Had no idea displacement in a bug could be as high as 2.8 liters. And all that extra standard equipment in this model is impressive. Thanks, as always.
Great car Lou ,but I must correct you on the engine capacity , it is 1. 6 cc not 2. 8 cc vw never fitted that engine as standard , I do know this because I own a Ultima edition bug !
Awesome car. I had two 1967s when i lived in the cal desert. Made them into baja bugs.they were amazing cars. Needed to be wrenched on a lot but worth it. Most fun ever running up the mountains and thru creekbeds and scrubrush. They would practically go up vertical hills. If VW made these again, exactly like they were tho, theyd sell 50 million of them in one year. Every car enthusiast and young person in the world would buy these and start customizing them. They were $1999 new in 1969. Another great find by master Lou!. Oh PS, me and wife Laura still play punch buggy game. She socked me good yesterday, two in a row. We have extra punches for, wild exotic colors, accessories, out of state plates, original 60s bugs and a few other things we can crack each other in the arm for. Fun

So this was one of the very final productions of the type 1 Volkswagen Beetle made in 2004 in Puebla Mexico. My father owned a 1965 and a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle, so I remember these Volkswagen Beetles from my young years. It is amazing that the production of Volkswagen Beetles continued for many years in Mexico and were sold in Mexico. However if I remember right by 1980 no new Volkswagen Beetles were sold in the United States. These are interesting cars from the past that will never be made again because of modern safety regulations and modern emission standards. However for a period of time these were main economy car, that was very basic and simple to work on.
Hope you're behind the wheel A R of the right Beetle for you soon, Lou

Hello Lou! I rode in many and drove a bug as a teenager from 1979 onward in México. Everyone in México owned at one time or another a "Volchito" or "Escarbajo" Bug in Spanish. Edición is pronounced with only one e. E-di-ción. Good post!
Really enjoyed the overview and ride. Thanks Lou! I may inherit a '95 Mexi-bug but it hasn't been registered in the states, and now I've got to figure out how to register this car (only 500 mi) in Cali without any documentation. Don't suppose you (or Dennis) could lend me some advice on how to get a '95 Mexi-bug without any documentation, registered in California (Placer County to be exact). Next question is; what's the value of a '95 Mexi-bug with 500 miles and in perfect condition (similar to Dennis' without the plastic). thanks!
Hi Paul, You're welcome. Hope you're behind the wheel of your Bug soon. If your car is over 25 years old, you should be fine registering it. Hope that helps, Lou
I wonder if VW has any idea how many of these they'd sell pre-production if they started building them again? Just the thought of the lost revenue between 2004 and the present is mind-boggling. Just as Suzuki should start selling its "Jimney" over here.
You could tell that it was destined for the Mexican market, through countless anti-theft sensors and V.I.N. numbers either stamped or engraved onto every part. I once owned a '74 Super Beetle, in the early 80s, of which was the genuine German ancestor to the vehicle featured here. I loved that car dearly. It was truly a pleasure to own and drive. When I bought it, it needed a ball joint. To save money I foolishly opted for a Mexican replacement part of which popped itself out on the freeway. When I returned with it to the store where I bought it, the proprietor had a shocked look on his face and then exchanged the part for a genuine expensive German one. I assume, he feared future law suits. He probably immediately emptied his shelf from the slip-shod items, as soon as I left

I remember when they said they were going to stop building these. The VW Beetle has always been special to me, I currently have a 1965 we have customized but like any project, it’s never finished
It would have been nice to learn the backstory on how he got this across the border. The low miles may be attributed that he can’t register it in the states, therefore it cannot legally be driven on the streets. Beautiful car, too bad it just sits in the garage.

I’ve got a ‘64 in almost the same color. Of course, I’ve converted mine to electric drive with 4X stock torque and 3X stock HP.
Hi Don, Happy to read you have a fun car too, Lou
I love that Aquarius blue color.

Lou,
Was this the last year the original VW Punch-buggies were produced in Mexico before they brought them back?? You got to love Dennis taking you for a ride in his cars….even the one with 95 kilometers! Thx Lou!
Yes, before we had the front engine Beetles
This I believe is the last year. Maybe a Viewer has more knowledge and can share.
Hello, I have a relative who has a mint condition version of this car. Same year, color, AC and has 2 certificates issued by the factory in Germany where it was made. Need help figuring out where he can advertise this for sale as he is interested in selling.
Hello Henry, I'd say Mecum or Barrett Jackson would be where I'd sell the car, Lou

How much did Dennis pay for that specific Mexican-made 2004 VW Bug?
No idea.
Beautiful piece of car history. Did the Última Edición came from the factory lacking A/C, was an option or the retro parts kept it from having A/C like other 2000s Beetles?
Hi Alejandro, Happy to share this "Beautiful piece of car history" with you :-) Hmmm, not sure about the lacking A/C situation. Hoping a Viewer can share knowledge on your question, Lou
I'd imagine AC was standard for 04 beetles in such a warm climate as Mexico 😅

Wonderful video. Just a remark... The engine of this VW beetle is 1.6 (1600i) fuel injection, not 2.8... My best regards from Mexico.

This is great !!! Amazing time capsule ;)
'69 or so, Family buys a Beetle new. "Where's the '65 Chevelle ???" 'Dub was as fun to drive, maybe more and of course better on gas. new home owners and all ;)
about a year later, i grad Jr high.

How was it imported into America? I would like to purchase one but would like to know how can I import it legally.
Hi SEICI RACING, Hmmm, not sure how it arrived. You might have to wait until 2029, Lou
A company does an older frame swap to make it legal. You can find Mexican Beetles for sale in the USA . Search Google.
Drive it in for a "car show", depending on the state if the car is 20 years or older you don't have to worry about emissions regulations.
How did you import the Mexican Beetle? And, is it still possible?
Hi Sara, Seems a VW Dealership had one he bought. It's not able to be registered until 2029. Lou
@@loucostabile wow! Thanks for responding!

Lou goes for his patented “exhaust note” shot and…well, ain’t nothin’ there. ;-) But such a cool car. Had no idea displacement in a bug could be as high as 2.8 liters. And all that extra standard equipment in this model is impressive. Thanks, as always.
Hi Anthony C, Happy to read you enjoy this "cool car" :-) My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Great car Lou ,but I must correct you on the engine capacity , it is 1. 6 cc not 2. 8 cc vw never fitted that engine as standard , I do know this because I own a Ultima edition bug !
Yes, the correct engine size of this Beetle is 1.6 L or exactly 1,584 cc . I have not idea why the owner states ; is it the big one;
Fun

I have heard of these late model Beetles, and now I've seen one thanks to Lou 😊
Happy to share this one with you :-)
So this was one of the very final productions of the type 1 Volkswagen Beetle made in 2004 in Puebla Mexico.

Hello Lou! I rode in many and drove a bug as a teenager from 1979 onward in México. Everyone in México owned at one time or another a "Volchito" or "Escarbajo" Bug in Spanish. Edición is pronounced with only one e. E-di-ción. Good post!
Hello José, Happy to read this video brings many good memories :-) Thank you for the help on the translation, Lou
Hi Dave F., That's a fun idea :-) Lou
The 2.8 is a 6 cylinder. This car has a 1.6. Nifty car.
Thanks for sharing.
