WADE FLEMONS - JEANETTE (RAMSEL)

- WADE FLEMONS "Jeanette" Ramsel Records Chicago, Illinois.
Wade Herbert Flemons (September 25th 1940 - October 13th 1993) born in Coffeyville, Kanas. After the Flemons family moved to Battle Creek, MI, in 1940, he formed a group called the Cavaliers consisting of Butch Bruch, Raymon Nievs, Marlin McNichols and James Kelly. Furthermore, another group The Newcomers and recorded “My Baby Likes To Rock”/”Here I Stand” in 1958 for Vee Jay records, Chicago. Flemons then began a solo recording career in 1958 and managed twelve single releases for VJ until 1965 and an album release in 1960 simply self-titled. One notable recording being the Clint Ballard Jr. penned “That Other Place” (Vee Jay 614) which also inspired a British female version by Susan Maughan (Philips BF 1363 11th September 1964). When Vee Jay Records went bankrupt in 1966 I guess it was time for Flemons to move on. However it wasn’t until 1967 that Flemons recorded for Ramsel Records and penned the first release “Jeanette”. Possibly linked to other US 1960’s recording singing about female names including Four Tops “Bernadette” (Motown 1967), “Linda” Leroy Taylor (Brunswick 1967) “Jamie” Eddie Holland (Motown 1962) or even the far rarer “Carlena” Just Brothers (Garrison 1966) and “Bernadine” Fred and Turbins (Cenco 1966?).
Jeanette is a tough Motown sound alike with an easily recognisable piano and drum intro, driving beat and accompanying male backing vocals. Flemons contributes his soulful “Hey-Yea's!" and "Alright's!” to the lyrics of watching and trying to get the attention of the unique character at a crowded dance.
“In my opinion, this was his finest work; a self composed song of tremendous power and infectious drive. Seems as though this record could have easily been a smash hit had it received wider distribution.”
Derek’s Daily 45’s.
“Before Wade Flemons added his flame to the band Earth Wind & Fire he ignited the northern soul scene with this 1968 scorcher, "Jeanette". I never cared for the name Jeanette until the needle dropped on this 45. It's that good. One might even call it a name changer.”
Groovy Rotations.
Flemons went on to co-write the Dells' 1968 hit "Stay in My Corner," around that same time joining Vee-Jay session vocalist Maurice White in the Salty Peppers for their debut single, "La, La, La"; in 1969 the group signed to Capitol for "La La Time," and after one subsequent effort, "Your Love Is Life," evolved into Earth, Wind & Fire. Flemons contributed vocals, vibes, and electric piano to the group until 1973, when he and several bandmates were dismissed by White.
Flemons died from cancer in Battle Creek, Michigan, aged 53. A United States Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War, he was buried at the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.
“Jeanette” was a regular find in legendary Selectadisc and Soul Bowl soul packs in the 1970’s. Following a big re-activation around 1998 the track saw further demand for the original Ramsel single. Now an established dancer at many “Oldies” all nighters.
Flemon's other Ramsel 45 (1002) "Two of a Kind" is actually much rarer than "Jeanette" and an equally soulful recording. - Видеоклипы

I'm Black from across the pond, and though I don't understand the dancing in conjunction with the beat of the records, I'm elated to see you love Black musicians and their music. Was not always the case here in the USA unfortunately...
Bradford, I’m a white bloke from Derbyshire in the middle of England, I’m 61 and for the vast majority of kids back in the ‘70’s black soul music was where it was at and will always be in our hearts, I have a massive collection of original vinyl that I have collected over the years, for true soul fans it doesn’t matter what colour you are, it’s all about the music, peace and love from a brother, keep the faith✊🏻
FYI 0:52 - 1:05 actual dancing to Jeanette ...only one camera used.

Unfortunately I never went to "The Wigan Casino" my Mum wouldn't let me go.
I love many genres of music including Jazz & Classical but Northern Soul doesn't only get my feet tapping but it makes my body move.
I've been to a few revival nights with friends but was absolutely gob smacked when a friend came round and showed me dancing in this video.
by far the best northern soul sounds and vids on RUclips - some of these dancers are phenomenal and rival the early years - keep on keeping em comin
Tune! Got a reissue, it's good enough for carting around town at 4 in the morning. Can't understand folk carting round 10/20 grand's worth of records to gigs.

This is UK northern soul!
Nice to see you mentioned "two of a kind" and the fact it's a lot rarer in quantity, as equally northern, yet commands less money to buy on original. Good video.
Great song and video
Brilliant ❤
Brilliant
Bought this around 2002 from Soul Bowl for £15 as my mate was playing it at a local soul night. He knew it from the Mecca in the 70's and we both played it at two venues back then. Ste Jones was playing it at the Viaduct Earlestown and I was playing it at Orrell Rugby Club and Horwhich Sports Centre soul nights. It became huge shortly after so I guess some other named dj must of got in to it I don't know. Classic now.
Outstanding ☺️
Great tune keep the faith Cyril ✊🏽

In Battle Creek Michigan Wade formed at group called the Cavaliers consisting of Wade Flemons, Butch Bruch, Raymon Nievs, Marlin McNichols and James Kelly.
+Marlin McNichols
Hey thanks Marlin for the information. I will add this to the video info.
(Visit Discogs for Marlin McNichols productions, arrangements and writing credits!)
I seem to remember reading Kev Roberts top 500 soul book that Wade was in Earth Wind & Fire around 1970-73?
About 28 degrees in the sunny East Midlands and this is smoking hot. KTF

+wendy wilde
Thanks WW.
Brilliant,foot tapping groovy tune..
I love watching this and other videos which depict patrons to Northern Soul music in the UK; this coming from an admirer from the USA! As I say, we have something similar to the music you play; if you go down to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that's where you'll find it; it's where I hope to go to visit someday, perhaps you might, too. Also, I'm listening to the "Rhythm Revue with Felix Hernandez", which comes on Saturdays and if you can get it online, that's fine as well; it also plays songs from yesterday--and some of today, with the focus on old school. As you say, KTF. From NYC.
Joi, I grew up as a kid in the 70s hooked to Northern Soul and never stopped dancing to it. My sister lived just outside Charlotte since the late 60s and when she saw me dance she said the footwork was like the Carolina Shag. Since that time I married a Texas Lass and has visited Murtle beach with the fabulous Shag Scene and brilliant Music which has many similarities to the Northern Scene. We now live near Austin Tx and I miss the music and dance from the Northern Scene but hopefully, we will get a chance to visit Murtle Beach this year and take our Dancing Shoes. KTF Paul & Linda O
Christ I can remember when this was £15 !!!!
Soul Pack Record.
yes I believe it was
First time hearing tune. I've been around for awhile and I've been to some places too, but I don't ever remember seeing this type of dance hall. Interesting to see lots of people dancing free form without a partner. A shot in the dark, England.
It's the King's Hall, Stoke on Trent, England.
Brilliant!
Magical to hear and see
Excellent video and Superb record.
