- This is the short film: Stories of Severna Park as they are told by the talented, long-time Severna Park Resident Scott Jay. First the story of Manuel Hendler, then the Dawson's Variety Store, followed by the Severna Park Railway Station and finally the LInstead-Boone-Riggs farm. This is part of the Living History of the Magothy River.
Thanks for the history of Severna Park. I lived there from 1959 -1972 in Cape Arthur on the Magothy River, next to Folger McKinsey Elementary School. For 4th -6th grade, I went there, 7th grade at Benfield Elementary, 8th -12th at Severna Park High School and then onto University of Maryland. I enjoyed riding my bike to Goska's for a bottle of pop and then onto Winklelmeyer's Hardware and the SP Library next to it on B&A Blvd. Wasn't the Post Office also in Dawson's at one time? I also was a Boy Scout in Troop 855 (St. Martins in the Field), and we would hike down the B&A Railroad tracks and camp a lot on farms along the Severn River. All the time I lived there, we never learned anything in school about the history of Severna Park. Thanks again.
Do you have picture of that time. Would you accept to be interviewed ?
Pictures or films ?
The post office was at the side of the building as I remember
Scott did a great job just hope he does more of these films!
Yes he is a great story teller and we plan more films like this. Feel free to come forward if you have ideas or materials such as old photographs or films from the old days of Severna Park.
Charles Germain I have an idea...
Scott Jay, it is good to see you talking about Severna Park. We went to school together. My father was raised at Fair Oaks on the Magothy and attended Severna Park Elementary School as I did. Miss Moss was also his Principal. I live in North Holland, the Netherlands now but hold many fond memories growing up in Severna Park. Thank you. Susan Kramer susankramer.com
Hi Susan. I will pass the message on to Scott jay. I am Charles Germain the film maker. I am originally from France but I spent 10 years of my life in Amsterdam. Goede dag!
I lived in whitehurst. That's next door to fair oaks.It was some awsome times.we moved there in 1970.I was 8.What a place to grow up.Fishing,crabbing,swimming,skateboarding.Community swim teams . community parades.I was in the color gaurd during our communities bicentennial parade. My best friend were also in that color gaurd. What a great time it was.
My mother always told us how mean Miss Moss was. When I took my son to see the movie "Matilda", I imagined that Miss Trunchbull was like Miss Moss!
Another great video about Severna Park! My Mom has always told us stories about riding the "doodlebug" from Severna Park to Baltimore and how the boys from Severn School would grease the rails so when the brakes were applied, the train kept right on going down the track!
If your mom is still alive can we interview her. Can we interview you as well? These are great stories.
I use to play on the beautiful Hendler Estate in my childhood all through the 1960's as we live in the community that bordered it, Evergreen Estates.
Same response as above. I would like to make a new video with additional materials. Do you know Scott Jay?
Don't know Jay. All of our home movie were just of our family at holiday times. Sorry.
Okay. Is there any footage of the Rivers or the Bay around the 4th of July celebration or stuff like this?
Scott Jay did a great job! Way to go! Very interesting video. It's nice to know information about older towns like Severna Park. You guys should do some more videos about the history of Severna Park!👍🏼😄
Thank you. I agree with you, Scott is a superb story teller. We will produce more of these videos in the future. As more old pictures and hopefully old 8 millimeters home movies are coming up.
I remember the days when you needed a bear license just to hunt along the Severn Run.
Interesting
Great videos, nicely filmed and produced. Scott Jay is the historian of Severna Park! One small note: The placement of the beautiful Maryland and U.S. flags on the front porch of the Linstead-Boone-Riggs house should have been reversed.
Thank you. I'll talk to Scott about the placement of the flags. I agree with you, Scott is the living memory of Severna Park. If we get good feedback from this short film, we may produce more in the future.
Stuart is SP's Flag Policeman ! Ha ! Ha ! Anything involving a flag better be correct or else Stuart will be on your case !
The SP Railroad Station during the late 1960's also was a Hobby Shop that had a huge slot car race track with about 8 tracks that we raced car on after school most every day.
Thank you for the info. Have you kept photographs or 8 mm home movies from that time. I would be delighted to produce a new video with new materials.
Thomas Forbus My old man always said the slot car track was above, what now is, the bank of severna park I think. Same parkinglot of Dawson's and Ritas.
Thomas Forbus But I would love to see pictures even if his memory is wrong. Has talked about it a lot over the years, as he supported me in the hobby of RC car racing.
I am making another short about Severna Park this summer. Any new materials you have been able to see? Any suggestions ?
Why is it the Magothy River? It should be the Severn River😌
Actually Severna Park is also on the Magothy River. The Magothy River Association (MRA) has asked me to produced these short films for their Living History Project. Severna Park, Pasadena and Arnold are of interest to them.
This was great fun. Nicely edited, too. Thank you!
Thanks. I am looking for old footage from the area like old 8 and super 8 home films from the 50's and 60's and home videos from the 70's and 80's. If you know a long time resident with such footage, let me know. CG.
