This is called a "shouter" song in our African American history. Our ancestors use to sing these types of "shouter songs" in slavery until "they felt they help comin' on" they sang it till it got good to 'em! I am 33 and I praise God for this heritage.
I'm not African American. While I don't know all the ins and outs of my family tree, it's highly unlikely that I share any heritage with these folks. However, they're singing about their faith and the glorious results of freedom found only in Christ and that connection I have with them is deeper than any that DNA can provide. YESSIR! JESUS DIED ON THE CROSS AND HE SET ME FREE! AMEN! AMEN! AMEN!
This is what church is all about! I am Southern Baptist and remember the old Camp Meetings and Tent Revivals where the saints of God would sing shout the house down. There was an elderly lady Granny Boger, and when the spirit hit that little Baptist grandma, watchout! Today's generation needs to experience the old time revivals and moving of the Spirit.
I am a Lowcountry gullah girl. I was introduced to this type of singing by my friend Bill Cobb from Clover, SC. I love it, absolutely love it! It touches my heart and soul. I can't help but try to sing along. Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting these. They are a true treasure!
MY my my! What a wonderdul sound. I luv our heritage, I wouldn't trade it for nuthin, our children need to be exposed to this and understand where God has brought us and why the songs like this are so precious.
Believer or not, Christian or not-the spiritual power of this song is undeniable!! I'm touched deeply each time I listen. "...Jesus died on the cross just to set me free..." "....I'm goin' away..."
It is so great to happen upon these Hymn Choirs... Being a traditional Baptist, I often debate with my friend from "Word" Churches over what kind of music brings one into God's presence...My argument is that it is the sincerity of one's heart as one worships and not a music style (Contemporary Praise & Worship) that brings one in to the presence of the Lord....God inhabits the praises of his people. This video proves just that. A hymn from the heart will take me "in" any day.
THIS IS ALL ABOUT A RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST. THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. There are no amplifiers, mics, drums, guitars, sax, or any instruments except the hands, feet and voices. Thank you so much for posting.
I believe this style of praise music has its' origin in the Gullah ring shout, which has it's origin in the Slave Christian tradition. The amazing thing is that these songs have as much power now as they did then. When engaged in song and dance in thanksgiving to God for being the great liberator, the soul indeed is made free. Our heritage is Great. It must be preserved.
wow. dis is true good old fashioned worship and praise done genuinely. this is the way i like it done!! all true from the heart, no megachurch televangelist bull, and just real Christians praising from the bottoms of their hearts!!
I remember going to the Methodist church as a child, (early 60's) and some of old ladies would tap their feet, when singing some of the songs.I always liked that part. If I sat on the end of an aisle. I would look at everybody's feet and shoes as they tapped their feet.
U gotta go through Jim Crow to feel this level of pain and soul This is how u sing when u gotta go to God To escape racism and this the only thing that uplifts your spirit cuz real life is miserable
This is wonderful, many Churches seems to be more of an entertainment and its not so with this. I live in the mountains that border KY and VA. There are ALOT of Churches here that have this pure simplicity to the worship. Mostly in the Old Regular Baptist churches.
beautiful specimen of the history of the baptist church in the south. This style is where we get the modern day artists in gospel and R&B. This is where it all began in the church..Love this bless you for sharing it with us.
None of these old school people is there so even if the church still exists ….I’m sure there’s only 10 people left and ain’t nobody alive that have this type of soul anymore
see some people don't don't fully know about the black baptist church and it's heritage. Some people think the baptist are stiff people who don't shout, but we don't no fast music or music at all. All you have to do is play a song like this and this will surely get the church moving.
It's so interesting to see how different Baptist churches are from region to region. I'm from a small-town Baptist church and our hymns were what we called Devotion Hymns - congregational call-responses, some people call them Dr. Watts Hymns. I like this! It's new to me.
This is wonderful! Are the people that are singing in the choir still living? We need to keep this tradition available for the younger generations. I was raised in the Holiness Church and we didn't have this but this transcends denominations for sure.
work hard work hard sang something I LOVE IT old time church PROGRESSIVE PRIMITIVE BAPTIST the camera man made it funny laughther good like medicine i needed that laugh
As a White folk I wish we could this kind of conviction in our praise music. I really can't stand the stuffy songs we have to put up with, many of them are dead and just don't have conviction in them. This is holy rejoicing and a powerful freedom song besides being an important part of Americas history- much more so than the European hymns.
If you listen to the Jamaican churches you will notice a very similar sound and style. Watch a video on here "Bishop Dunn Bethel Family First United Church -New York Convocation1994". This church is in NYC but the people are Jamaican.
+Cankuwicasa You can be taught to sing the hymn choirs practice but you have to have a relationship with Christ to know what it means and to truly be set free!

I love this hymn cause truly he set me free from all of my sin we used to sing this song at Silver Mount Baptist Church in Charlotte Nc.
