  • I am very proud to welcome ‪@AnnaLapwoodOrgan‬ to give the latest BIS Organ Recital on the BIS Organ!
Anna has a very distinguished career. She is Director of Music at Pembroke College, Cambridge having previously been Organ Scholar at Magdalen College Oxford, the first female in the college’s 560-year history to be awarded the Scholarship. In 2022 she was appointed Associate Artist of the Royal Albert Hall and Artist in Association with the BBC Singers.
After Anna has finished playing, we have a fun chat about (mostly) organ-related matters.
0:00:00 | JS Bach - Prelude and Fugue in A Minor BWV 543
    Britten - Sea Interludes
    0:10:28 | Dawn
    0:14:38 | Sunday Morning
    0:19:44 | Kristina Arakelyan - Star Fantasy
    0:25:31 | Ghislaine Reece-Trapp - In Paradisum
    0:30:40 | Franck - Choral No. 3 in A minor
    0:44:34 | Interview with Anna
    0:53:05 | Quickfire questions!
    1:02:17 | Outtakes
The Bach was played on the organ of St Laurenskerk, Rotterdam and the rest of the programme was that of St Martin's Church in Dudelange using Hauptwerk software.

I hope that you can all see the tangible improvements being made to BIS along our shared journey.

This is a magnificent example of what that funny rear part of the brain does so well, the cerebellum. Placing her feet on the correct pedal key, let alone pushing the preset stop button!, is all cerebellar - Anna doesn't have to think where her feet (or hands) are, her cerebellum and all the position feedback systems we have in our bodies, tells her exactly - the cortex just has to give the command. This takes time and lots of learning to achieve - no different to skiing, gymnastics, guitar playing , riding a bike or other activities we do. But we forget this wonderful part of our brain. Anyway she's a wonderful exemplar.

You two are so much fun and your music is spectacular, especially extending beyond just the traditional classical, which I do have a lot of respect for and enjoy. To me it is just a natural expansion of what has come before. And so I say to Anna, from the words of a song of a group that I have long listened to, "Let us put men and women together
    See which one is smarter
Some say men, but I say no
Women run the men like a puppet show"
And to Richard, thank you for not only sharing your musical gifts but having the respect for, and recognizing those of others! And so I say thank you, and well done both of you!

I am not a big fan of organ music, but I thought I'd listen for just a short bit to hear the instrument and see what you might do with it. I was so blown away by this performance that I had to listen to the entire recital. I very rarely do that, especially when I'm listening from my phone because the sound is so poor. But in this case, I couldn't help myself. I was memorized by every note.

I'm a retired clarinetist for the US Army bands of 25 years. Today, I personally enjoy playing swing/jazz on clarinet and playing country/rock/gospel sax but I was 'raised' on classical clarinet (Bach is a B*** to play in a quartet or ww quintet). Having experienced classical music, I know and greatly appreciate what you do and understand the work you had to put in to achieve this level! Years ago as a young Lowrey organ dealer, I was introduced to pipe organ music played by E. Power Biggs. Re-introduced to it from the "Joy of Music" series by the "First Lady of the Organ", Diane Bish. Wow, I'd never heard a pipe organ handled like she did ie, from powerful roaring pipes (Widor's Toccata) to barely a whisper ( Mendolssohn's Nocturne), I enjoy listening to Ms. Bish's old Joy of Music programs on RUclips. SO, while scrolling on RUclips looking for more, I stumbled (as you said here) upon You! I now listen to every video by you or Ms. Bish wherever I can find them. I LOVE this music! The music you've played on this particular recital featured here absolutely blew me away!! I listened as you made a mighty pipe organ angrily bark and roar, then suddenly whisper, seemingly popping "butterflies" out of the pipes above you from ranks up in a back room somewhere with the rest of the pipes--within the same piece! Unbelievable! Your original compositions played here are fantastic. Sitting here alone in front of my computer listening to your recital here, I just wanted to jump to my feet and applaud you, but, well, instead I just slumped back, saying "wow, just wow!". I would love to see more families come back to God and back to church where they and their children especially can experience and be inspired this magnificent instrument--but, like you say, social media will catch young students faster unfortunately, but surely. May God continue to bless you on your musical journey and keep on inspiring young people and playing for us all!!

Marvelous program. Absolutely loved hearing the new works from Gregoriana especially. Wonderfully fresh, beautiful, and useful pieces. Anna is an inspiration!

What an amazing feeling of tactus and the perfect tempo for that A minor prelude & fugue of Bach, yet enough freedom and musicality throughout the performance that exposes the expressiveness and sheer talent. The fugue is quite hard in that the theme, which is quite excentric and virtuoso, remains unchanged in the pedal. Finally, such an organic posture whilst doing all of the handling manually without assistance (playing, turning pages, registration) is nothing short of amazing. Congratulations, and thanks for this wonderful recital 😇

Wonderful recital . It brought back memories of learning both the Bach A minor and the Franck when I was an organ student at the RNCM in the 1970s (one of only 3 girls out of 15 organ students. Alas, the Hradetzky organ sits silent most of the time now as they no longer offer organ as a principal study). Both Richard and Anna are wonderful ambassadors for organ music. Thank you !

I’m very saddened to hear they no longer offer principal study organ at the RNCM. I was there from 78-82 - happy days!

Anna Lapwood is a "ROCK" Star I live in the states and do not play the instrument. But what she does with it is simply amazing. Her breakthrough performance last year at the BBC Proms has opened the door to get more girls and young women interested in the organ. And she is an absolute wonder as a conductor as well. I hope I can see her in person And her last minute addition to the Bonobas Concert at RAH was brilliant.

Lovely recital! In response to Anna's interview: I became exposed to & intrigued with pipe organs and pipe organ music initially through seeing a children's book fantastic illustration of Dr Seuss's interpretation of a steam organ, with an array of manuals, stops, pedals, & pipes, being played, and with the organ mounted astride some marching imaginary beast, in Dr Seuss's "If I Ran The Circus" book. Around the same time, my father gave me a vinyl phonograph album, "Bach Organ Favorites", played by E Power Biggs. Together, that book illustration & vinyl album, inspired me to follow pipe organs and pipe organ music!

Methinks the Czarina of the Organ World Jeanne Demessieux would highly approve of Anna's artistry - simply spectacular! Thank you Lord Richard for letting Anna share her talents with us. Why I used the word Czarina is because Jeanne Demessieux rocked my cradle with her interstellar artistry, thats all. Then who is the Czar? Imnsho Pierre Cochereau - He Rocked!

BRAVO!!! Blown away by your virtuosic performance on the first piece. But I loved the second piece with the car horns. What incredible skill and creativity! Impressive to see all the stops change, but even more impressive was to see you flip the page on the first piece and not miss a beat. The videography is excellent as well, I love when you had the view of your feet superimposed where your music was. Wow! You got my like and follow!

Merveilleuse interprétation par une magnifique artiste. Cette oeuvre de JS Bach est rarement lisible dans l'interprétation qui en est donnée. Celle-ci est sublime. Merci beaucoup.

Dawn….words are inadequate to describe the overall impact… on social media I especially enjoy the quick clips with Anna because she looks like she is having such a good time. I love organ, but as mentioned, am rarely in a church setting, so it’s great to make the music more available.

Anna, you are such a positive role model for musicians, young people, and women too! Thank you for joining us at BiS and for sharing your talent and joy. Delightful and entertaining. 😊
