This is a couple car review of the all-new 2022 Lexus NX450h+ plug-in hybrid. This PHEV has a 2.5L 4-cylinder with Lexus plug-in hybrid drive, an ECVT and 302 total system horsepower. The estimated EV range numbers are 58 km/36 miles but the official numbers will be released when our review drops 10/7 9:30 pm PST/12:30 am EST. The Toyota RAV4 Prime offers 68 km/ 42 miles of EV range, the best range available for a PHEV. The new NX is longer, wider and taller than the outgoing model but still not as big as the Acura RDX. In comparison, the RDX is over 3 inches longer, offers almost 2 inches more second row legroom, an extra 6.8 cubic feet behind the second row and 12 cubic feet more overall cargo capacity. The RDX also offers a flat floor in the second row which the NX does not have. Our test model in bright blue with a black & tan interior and black open-pore wood trim looks quite elegant. It has a 14” touchscreen, a 10” head up display leather-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel which is heated all the way through, power driver and passenger seats, driver seat memory, a 6.6 kWh charger which is standard in Canada, the US gets a standard 3.3 kWh charger and 20” wheels. There is no panoramic sunroof on our test model, it has a moonroof. Not sure at this time if a panoramic sunroof is available on the PHEV like the NX 350. Individual trims have not been made public yet; we’ll get those closer to the on-sale date this December. The exterior doesn’t look as angular as the outgoing model, it is more rounded, it has an enhanced spindle grille, 18” wheels with optional 20” wheels. The back end has slim LED taillights and a full light bar with the Lexus script. All NX models come with run flat tires now to save space in the cargo area, there is no longer a spare tire. Instead, you get under floor storage and for the Hybrid or PHEV, it’s where the battery is stored. There is an available hands free power liftgate. Standard LED headlights and LED taillights with optional triple beam headlights. Designers took a lightweight and compact approach reducing the overall gross weight of the NX 210 pounds.

I have lots of faith of Toyota hybrid and PHEV, their reliability record is amazing. What I am worrying is whether NX450 will have the same pathetically long waiting list as RAV4 Prime. Or will the introduction of NX shorten the waiting list of the RAV4.

Hybrid demand is far exceeding supply on Lexus side. But 450h+ not as much. Not seeing as many coming but RX 350h sold as soon as they come up in system. The NX hybrids aren’t getting sold that quick.

As a hybrid owner, I love the idea of plug-ins, especially for short trips in the winter where hybrid doesn’t meet the fuel economy estimates. I do think it’s a fairly small minority of people who will go to the effort of plugging the car in regularly. I guess it’s good they come with a premium price to weed out the people who aren’t serious about plugging in.

PHEVs are a good compromise, for now, as I don’t think EVs and the infrastructure is where it needs to be to be truly mainstream yet. In 5-10 years yes but now not quite.

The door latch make sense because you don’t have to change your grip from opening the door and holding it out so that it doesn’t ram into the car next to you.
You don’t usually grip onto the usual door latch/levera

I wish more vehicles had the touchpad - I agree its not as intuitive as touching the screen [for setup], however when you're driving, a touchpad IMHO provides superior ability to do simple switching tasks by feel.
With system going all touchscreen now, I'd be thrilled with a trackpad and would learn pretty quickly how to navigate the menu/UI structure by feel and corner of vision glances. Touchscreens in my opinion, require more focused attention and being farther away, I tend to have to reach.

This is the entry level Lexus that I love and willing to buy over any other in its class. It’s near perfect modern compact luxury SUV. It looks far better than the RAV4 Prime and it looks better than any compact luxury SUV you can name. Moreover, the quality, reliability, dealer service satisfaction, lower cost of maintenance and retaining high resale value of Lexus brand. The new NX is definitely a winner and the NX450h is my favorite.

Is there not some kind of a bumper standard in North America that requires a car to sustain minimal damage from a collision on the bumpers? This model looks like the front grille would be destroyed even from a minor bump in the parking lot. Perhaps the collision avoidance system is protecting against that, but what if someone backs into you while parallel parking?

In our testing, we beat the Lexus-estimated acceleration to 60 mph by a full half-second, hitting 60 in 5.5 seconds versus the quoted 6.0-second time. That's quicker than the other 2022 NX models we've tested, but a 2021 XC60 Recharge reaches 60 in a MotorTrend-tested 5.0 seconds. We haven't yet tested a Q5 plug-in, but Audi estimates its model to be just as quick as the Volvo. In case you wonder, the lighter-weight RAV4 Prime matches the NX450h+'s 5.5-second time to 60.
This means the NX plug-in hybrid is both the quickest NX money can buy and the slowest SUV in its tiny segment.

  • @jeremyhodges82

I've been watching all of your videos on plug-in hybrid SUVs because I plan on buying one this year. I was about to pull the trigger on a Hyundai Tucson or Santa Fe, but then I thankfully found a site that mentioned that the EV driving doesn't work in you have the a/c OR heater on! This was a huge roadblock for me, as I would otherwise be able to conduct most of my driving in EV mode. Do you know if the Lexus NX 450+ is similar to the RAV4 Prime and is able to run in EV mode even with the a/c or heat on?

Great review! Hmm…I have a RAV4 Prime and originally thought this is not worth the upgrade in price since it’s the same powertrain, but…I like some of the luxury…Wish it was standard with a 6.6kw charger. I think the 3.3 is standard and the 6.6 is an upgrade option. That’s the same in the RAV4 Prime…no bueno…LMFAO about the infotainment being 5x faster! That last iteration was from the Mesozoic era! How’s the storage in the rear compared to the RAV4 Prime? Same, a little less due to more noise cancelling foam, etc.? The RDX is too over the top on the interior and the dash is ridiculous…that huge button in the middle is unnecessary…And, a ten speed tranny is just too much shifting…and no PHEV. The Lexus kills it in every category. BTW, I haven’t watched in a while and didn’t realize this was your channel since Andrea is highlighted on the thumbnail? Why aren’t you on their too? I’m guessing the analytics say you’ll get more clicks with a female on the thumbnail…I hope that’s not the reason…

Just don't expect the agility of a Genesis GV70 or Alfa Romeo Stelvio. On our figure-eight course-a MotorTrend test that evaluates acceleration, braking, handling, and the transitions in between-the NX450h+'s performance doesn't reflect the way it feels in the real world. The plug-in finished the test in 28.4 seconds at 0.57 g (average), well behind the quicker Volvo's 26.3 seconds at 0.69 g but also behind the RAV4 Prime (27.0 seconds at 0.65 g) and the NX350h. That NX hybrid variant is nearly 400 pounds lighter than the NX450h+ and finishes the figure-eight course quicker, at 28.0 seconds at 0.59 g.

Not only do run-flat tires get loud but there is no spare tire available. We have friends who own BMW's and they have been in a bind many times when their run-flat tire blew and were in an area where they couldn't find/buy another. It is okay if it happens in a city that has a BMW dealership but if you are not, it's very inconvenient. Luckily, we had a larger vehicle and were able to pick them up on the side of the road as we were both vacationing together. It was a real hassle for them to find one and ended up staying at the resort longer than they planned until they could get one.

@@andreaspencer9813 we were quite sceptical when my wife got her 2019 UX with run flat tires. When researching the negatives on these tires the concerns was pretty much what you mention on your reply.
While we do mostly city driving in our UX hybrid we also do long trips and the only issues we had all this time was a couple nail punctures and they were repaired like any other conventional tire. Sure it’s always good to have a spare, I prefer it myself. But To be honest I don’t remember the last time I had use the spare on my 2016 Tacoma because I had flat or blown tire except, to rotate all 5 tires when needed.
I think proper tire maintenance is the key. Weather your car run flats or not.
What I’m saying is we haven’t experienced a blown tire with any vehicles we have or had. And we do quite a bit of it. But again, sure accidents can happen

"...This new take on the NX is arguably the best compact SUV Lexus has ever built, but unless you're tied to the Lexus badge, there are better options in its segment. Sure, it's the only non-plug-in hybrid in the class (ignoring mild hybrids, that is), but if you really want to reduce your environmental impact, either buy an EV or go for a more impressive non-hybrid SUV and eat a little less beef.Despite its off-road prowess, we found the NX350h's overall ride and handling somewhat less impressive. Dynamically, the NX defaults to understeer (as most similar crossovers do and probably should) with reasonable grip, but it doesn't deliver the type of engaging driving experience the Jaguar F-Paces and Genesis GV70s of the segment do. From an overall ride quality perspective, the NX350h's suspension will easily reach its bumpstops through larger bumps and struggles to settle down over stretches of uneven pavement. The cabin is proper luxury-SUV quiet, but the rest of the experience fails to live up to that standard...." Motor Trend

Is it weird that I'm actually kinda disappointed with the interior? For the asking price, and especially how expensive it can get, it doesn't seem premium. No leather or stitching on the dash or covering the door panels, basic headliner material, not even standard leather seats, etc. I personally think the 14" screen is way too big, and doesn't look "premium". Something like the Genesis GV70 blows this out of the water, the only real downside being is no hybrid or plug-in model for that vehicle.

Uh, sorry, this video is a waste of my time. What I am desperate to know is this, as compared to the Lexus NX350h - in FULL HYBRID (not EV) mode: 1) Is the acceleration better and 2) is the engine less noisy during acceleration. If I bought the 450h, I likely would not bother to plug it in on a regular basis as it would be a pain to plug it in every night. Even our Tesla Model 3, we plug it in every 4-5 days. We just use a 120 Volt outlet and let it sit overnight. We get close to 50 miles after 12 hours on 120 volts. This is partly because in our garage, the Tesla charge cord isn't long enough to reach the 240 Volt Tesla outlet. Just 4 feet short, as a matter of fact, but I'm so afraid of buying an extension cord. Even a 10-15 foot cord weighs a ton, people say!
