The two sister towns that form Laufenburg are quite exceptional.
Napoleon split the town in two over 200 years ago, but joint cross-border festivals are still an essential part of life in Laufenburg.
Two bridges now link both towns.
Today, the two towns are only separated by the Rhine. Joint festivals breathe new life into the mediaeval lanes.
Throughout the year, visitors can take a cross-border audio walking tour, the recorded commentary plunges walkers into the history of the sister towns of Laufenburg - which lie on the Upper Rhine, so atmospheric river cruises are a tempting option.
