This is such a great produced musical capturing the mood of the wartime in the 40;s. Actually made in 1944, at the time Rita was in early pregnancy having to get all the dance numbers filmed early, as the movie goes on, Rita's figure starts to change and covered up by her costumes to conceal her figure. She delivered Rebecca Welles in December 1944 prior to the release of the film. Rita was at her gorgeous and talented best in this film.....what great dancing she did and beautiful as ever in technicolor.
Hollywood has given us many gorgeous, iconic ladies. Choice is personal. For me, Rita remains the most beautiful, natural, charismatic of all leading ladies.
What a gorgeous creation of a film that resonates in particular for someone who has spent half a lifetime in the US and the other in Britain. This story has such a wistful poignancy, loosely based on The Windmill Theatre, which really did remain open during The Blitz. It was depicted again more recently in "Mrs. Henderson Presents" with Dame Judi Dench in 2005. The Windmill is now a restaurant, bar and cabaret that reopened in 2021 in Soho. Rita Hayworth lights up the screen, as she does in all her films, with her mesmerising dancing and pulls at our heartstrings with the wonderful Lee Bowman. Janet Blair is radiant as Judy and not enough superlatives can be said for the dancing of Marc Platt, who lived a very long life, unlike his character. Thank you for bringing this marvellous gem to a new generation.
STAR POWER that is Rita ,best screen dancer beautiful to a fault, the Love Goddess , Venus de Milo. Jean Louis my dresses fall perfectly on her shes so perfectly slim. Provocation was an Hayworth speciality, there was never anything cheap or vulgar about her. If Rita was the heroine we never cared how the movie was we were thrilled just. to see her beauty n dancing talent.❤
I was born in 1957, so this is all new to me but i like it !!! My mom loved musical movies , so now i got the same feeling and love for these movies !!! Thank you !!! ❤❤❤😊😊😊 L.M.
This was an awesome production and Rita's dancing was such a beautiful thing to watch. I've never seen anything more awesome than her fantastic moves. And my shout out to the Air Force.
I know! I watch Rita dance and I don’t know how she managed to be so FEMININE and flit around, not to mention the clothes are ALL AMAZING and helping the moment happen. It’s breathtaking, to be sure!
That was certainly "kind" Of Fred giving such "sweet" compliment to Rita,....however,...there's a certain Blonde, who busted her Hump for years,& Never got the Respect she deserved & earned! Ginger, was an AMAZING dancer,& an accomplished actress! And Gorgeous!!! Fred,...meh,not so hot...
@@darlaangel7853 Relax, Darla! Ginger certainly did get the respect she merited as one of the greatest stars of all time. She did eight films with Astaire & even won an Oscar. Then, she went on to have a second career as a star in Las Vegas.
Very much a movie of its time. How many of us were kids during WWII, learning the configurations of enemy planes, ducking under desks when the sirens went off, waiting for our block warden Dad returned from his night patrol…
Rita’s singing voice was always dubbed in her movies. She wanted her studios to give her lessons but they refused. It was easier to dub her using various singers. Sometimes they even dubbed well-known singers if they wanted a different quality of voice.
Rita's story is heartbreaking. She was very abused in many ways, used and underestimated. Harry Cohn, Columbia owner, should have paid for singing lessons!!! She's an incredible dancer.
Rita didn't have the greatest singing voice, she sang very good though. But her dancing was hypnotic, mesmerizing, captivating and beautiful ! I'm sixty one and have only seen maybe 4 of her movies and look forward to seeing many more. What a looker and incredibly graceful. I can understand what joy she brought to men in service. She deserved to dance with Fred Astaire, who I consider one of the best. Great movie 🎥 🤌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻❤ 🌬☠🏴☠️
Lee Bowman was the only Englishman without an English accent or he might be Canadian ??? At least Janet Blair tried. We tend to forget how much of a wonderful dancer Marc Platt was. At least until Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. In that film, he shines but he got much more to do in this. Enjoyable film that I had never seen. Thank you for posting.
When this film was released, Columbia was right in the middle of developing stars for the first time. In the 1930s, Columbia borrowed stars from other studios whenever it was making an ''A'' film. But after luring in Cary Grant on a split contract with RKO and Melvyn Douglas with MGM, Columbia started getting serious about developing it's own. First came Rita Hayworth and Janet Blair, then William Holden and Glenn Ford and finally, Marc Platt. The studio had some success pairing Rita with FAred Astaire and Gene Kelly, but now, they wanted to develop someone to dance with Rita.
I looked this film up after watching it and it only has 35% on rotten tomatoes. I love this picture and have seen it many times now. It’s one of the best I’ve seen of Rita and I love the dance scenes in the film.
Ginger Rogers,Rita Hayworth ,Lesley Caron,Vera Ellen ,Ann Miller,Brigitte Bardot,Debby Reynolds ,Debra Paget and Cyd Charise si the respectably best and great dancers of all times and queen of dance Galina Pavlova Russian ballerina

Read the credits. It was filmed in Technicolor. Columbia was the last major Hollywood studio to use Technicolor, but when it used it for ''Clver Girl'' in 1944, it only filmed Rita Hayworth in black & white twice more (''Gilda'' and ''The Lady From Shanghai.'').
1945 the United States 🇺🇸 had just taken Europe back from the Nazis and was dividing the spoils of Germany , on one hand . On the other hand the US military was occupying the recently obliterated and crushed Japanese empire and sifting through the rubble of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The great momentum that of American manufacturing had built up was starting to phase into peacetime production. America was the best place to live and live was good. The country still had morality and ethics at the foundation. For 10 to 15 more years . But then then came the communist infiltration of our government and the hippy invasion from England and Cia secret wars and police action wars that wiped out consecutive generations of good loyal patriotic Americans. The 60s and 70s opened the floodgates and demoralized the country.
WARNING: THIS MOVIE SHOULD BE RATED PG-13! IT HAS A VERY SAD AND DRASTIC ENDING THAT CHILDREN SHOULD NOT SEE! IT IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL 1940's FILM! I WILL GET A LOT OF HATE FOR THIS BUT I WOULD NOT LET MY YOUNG CHILDREN WATCH THIS MOVIE BASED SOLELY ON IT'S CONCLUSION!!!!!

Rita Hayworth had it all..talent, beauty, humour, elegance, style and more. She was a living goddess.
If she were ugly or fat 🤷 she wouldn't have been given a chance.
Her life tho was so tragic starting at a young age she didn't deserve. Shame on her Father!
You took the words right out of my mouth ! Nuff said !
You said that like u lived with her. She most likely the complete opposite for her characters
I don’t mind her as an actress and dancer, but never have thought of her as gorgeous or beautiful. Pretty, maybe.

Fred Astaire said that Rita Hayworth was the best dance partner he worked with in Hollywood.

Lee Bowman, not Hugh Beaumont.
