Correct, James just wasn't committed to staying in championship shape. He had one period after he basically gave up vs Tucker where he committed himself mentally and physically to boxing and this culminated in his victory over Tyson which was no fluke. Douglas dominated Tyson for 10 rounds. I've read similar accounts of Douglas after he won the title. He enjoyed the celebrity status but grew tired of Don King and all his managers looking to gobble up his money. Douglas was wired to rise above adversity as we saw in the weeks leading up to the Tyson fight (he had every excuse to give up then) but he was ill prepared to handle success. Pizza. I had heard he actually ordered a pizza to the ring where he was training and to his hotel room the day of the fight. His conditioning was disgraceful. He looked like jelly. He had 20,000,000 reasons to show up in shape ready for 12 rounds of fistic mayhem and give the fans a real fight and show the world he was a real champion. All I need to see was the weigh in. Evander looked his usual quietly intense self. No fear, in shape, focused and ready for 12 rounds of hell. Douglas could be visibly seen to be sucking his gut in. He disgraced the heavyweight title. It wasn't knockout lights James was seeing. He continued to lay on the canvas to sell the punch which was a textbook counter right to a pathetic lead uppercut by Douglas. it was a good punch, but not a devastating KTFO punch. As he laid and laid I just shouted at the screen: "Get the fuck up the ruse is over. You aren't fooling anybody. You laid down like a beached whale!"
You can eat how many pizzas or hamburgers as you want if you study your opponent and box good. He was terrible in this fight, and that last uppercut he threw was so bad. He was wide open for that right hand from Evander.
Douglas was a mediocre boxer who beat Tyson, because the latter did not prepare properly and was confident that he would win easily. Tyson may have been great, but his career ended when he lost to this mediocre Douglas.

@Lorenzo Von Matterhorn yes no doubt? I doubt it. Holyfield didn't fight Tyson until after prison - 1997-8 ish wasn't it? How good was Holyfield in 1990 when Douglas beat Tyson. Holyfield v Tyson would have been good but Holyfield undoubtedly win? I don't know about that, remember Douglas was 42-1 to win.
Holyfield's back is like a fucking anatomy chart - when he and Tyson fought there were bodybuilders out there that must have thought they weren't training hard enough .
FBI Douglas got floored by Tyson with one uppercut, wasn't even Tyson's hardest punch. It took Douglas 50 punches to dropped an UNFOCUSED Tyson and get that FLUKE victory.😅😅😅😅
I love Tyson! But Holyfield was the real deal!! He found a way to win. Dirty yeah but undersized heavyweight banging with 250 # plus heavyweights he's a badass. Punchy as hell but a legend.
A prime Evander Holyfield was possibly the hardest hwt to beat. And that includes Ali,Foreman,Dempsey,Joe Louis,Holmes,Tyson etc. This man had it all speed, combinations, the best heart and chin, and a will unlike anyone else.Evander had everything you could want in a fighter. Those that continue on with this Tyson story only are fooling themselves,Tyson at NO TIME in his career would've beaten Evander, because Evander was the much tougher fighter (mentally) and the guy with the much BIGGER HEART.A PRIME TYSON gets K.O'd by Evander.
I think Buster gets a bad rap for losing this fight. He fought a great fight against Tyson when Tyson wasn't on his game, and Holyfield (who beat Tyson twice) fought a great fight against Buster. To trash Buster for losing the title so soon after getting it is to disrespect Holyfield. At the time nobody knew how good he was. He turned out to be one of the greats.
Tyson's autobiography is fucking fascinating. Got it as a Xmas gift, I've read it twice all the way through, and still bring it with me when I travel just to skim through because there are so many insane and amazing stories in there.
I remember this fight at the time. When they did the weigh in and Buster was overweight, I KNEW Holyfield was going to beat him. I remember reading it in the paper the next day that Holyfield won and I wasn't surprised at all. It felt like the beginning of new era, which it was. The 90's was really Holyfields decade in boxing.
In short, the one who continues to win is the champion and does not wait for Tyson downhill and watches him and wins him by slow counting. After the match, a donkey cannot beat any player and you say this is a hero. the thing
Regardless of Buster's conditioning, Evander got him figured out. Buster's jab wasn't as effective cause Evander would lean his upper body to his right. Slipping and using his rear hand to parry incoming jabs. Evander would also preemptively duck down as Buster adjusted from throwing jabs to short hooks. Evander got the timing and would slip Buster's jab and throw 1-1-2 or triple jab which was nailing Buster's face early. Evander feinted a jab which Buster attempted to counter with a 6. Which y'all know got countered when Evander simply stepped back and nailed him with a right.
Douglas just didn't want to be there. Didn't even try to get up. Complete opposite of the fighter who wanted to win so bad against Tyson. Holyfield was Holyfield, scared of no one and ready and willing to take the fight to anyone.
Douglas was a known quitter before fighting Tyson. Looked for the ref a few times, didn't want to fight. Look at the knock down here. He checks for blood on his glove. He's not really hurt, but doesn't bother trying to get up. His head did not bounce off the canvas. When that happens, usually a fighter is out. In Training for the Tyson fight, during training in Tokyo, Douglas got word that his beloved mother passed away. He had to stop training to fly home and bury her. On the flight back to Tokyo, he learned that the mother of his child was terminally ill. When returning to Tokyo, he was asked for a prediction for the fight. He said to the reporter "Tyson's dead" and was very emotional. Right about that time Angelo Dundee called it. He said Tyson will be knocked out. The man had some motivation. During the fight, the left jab was snapping so hard that I told a friend, "Tyson's left eye will be shut by the sixth". And, it was, rendering all right hands for free, as Tyson couldn't see them coming any more. Straight from a boxing manual. Those were some good times. My friend and I had predicted that Mike would get KO'd by "bum of the month" and, he was.
Douglas wasn't a bum. He was just depressed...he was DEPRESSED. Beyond that, everything you said was right. The Douglas that fought Tyson beats damn near every great heavyweight all time.
Tyson lost that fight, because he did not prepare properly and was confident that he could win easily. Tyson may have been one of the greats, but that fight was sadly the end of his career. He's amazing how mediocre a fighter Douglas could beat Tyson.
This was Holyfield’s prime. He was TOUGH at this weight. Has speed, power, and crazy endurance. His speed and endurance really left him in later years. This version of Holyfield could beat anyone.
I love holyfields stance with the hopping i see it helps him gets into rhythm and to feel for his opponents rhythm too also allows him to slip in and out reminds me of Bruce lees stance against Chuck Norris
@@KokutenNoKamiDa If your under 30 years old and past your prime you were never that good in the first place. Tyson was great and he was in his prime. Lotta comments about how Buster could have gotten up if he wanted to. If that’s true then Moorer could have just chosen to get up against Foreman. Two well-placed heavyweight punches - same result, the way I see it.
Holyfield had some of the prettiest heavyweight boxing ever. It’s really in the details, and easier to appreciate when you really start to know the sport.

You are absolutely right TRONICBOX, when Cuz passed, a part of Tyson died also, his whole fight style changed, no more head and foot movement, became an easy target for everyone, but Buster fought a great fight, but this fight, he clearly wasn't in shape, and didn't have that same determination.
Years after this, he got so morbidly obese that the doctors (seriously!) had to put him in a medically induced coma, to keep his diabetes complications from threatening his life. 😶

How good was Holyfield in 1990 when Douglas beat Tyson. Holyfield v Tyson would have been good but Holyfield undoubtedly win? I don't know about that, remember Douglas was 42-1 to win.
This was not the Buster who beat Mike Tyson. This guy looks like he works at Krispy Kreme, and he's been stealing some of the product...
😂😂😂😂
How the fuck do you know?? Are you his manager at Krispy Kreme??
Holyfield's back is like a fucking anatomy chart - when he and Tyson fought there were bodybuilders out there that must have thought they weren't training hard enough .

Yea like wtf 😂😂
Mario Marcel, CPA still knocks out tyson, sooooo
Mario Marcel, CPA DAMN BRO!🤣🤣😆😆😂😂😆😂😂🤣😆😂😆
FBI Douglas got floored by Tyson with one uppercut, wasn't even Tyson's hardest punch. It took Douglas 50 punches to dropped an UNFOCUSED Tyson and get that FLUKE victory.😅😅😅😅
Encino Man sorry bigman i wanna see u knockout mike, bet u cant even knock out beetlejuice lmao
I love Tyson! But Holyfield was the real deal!! He found a way to win. Dirty yeah but undersized heavyweight banging with 250 # plus heavyweights he's a badass. Punchy as hell but a legend.
Not dirty
My fav.boxer with iron body
I dont think he was dirty. Clean puncher if there ever was.
holyfield proven PEDs cheater he doesn't count
He took more punches than any boxer in modern time..I worry about him.
Deagledrumzz EXACTLY! Been saying this for the longest. But of course these Tyson fanboys don’t want to hear it.
Clean knock out counter punch. Evander is the Real Deal.
If this Douglas goes to Tokyo, he gets KO'd in 2. Even by the version of Tyson that was there
Lol
True
I remember this fight at the time. When they did the weigh in and Buster was overweight, I KNEW Holyfield was going to beat him. I remember reading it in the paper the next day that Holyfield won and I wasn't surprised at all. It felt like the beginning of new era, which it was. The 90's was really Holyfields decade in boxing.
Personally i’d say the 90s was a tie between Lennox Lewis, RJJ and Holyfield
Wow, you must have been the only one who guessed it. Besides every one who said the same thing.
Riddick bowe also
In short, the one who continues to win is the champion and does not wait for Tyson downhill and watches him and wins him by slow counting. After the match, a donkey cannot beat any player and you say this is a hero. the thing
@@aleneziiii Wow. You sure like repeating yourself. Did you lose money in the Tyson fight or something?
Just goes to show that Knocking out Mike Tyson does not make you Mike Tyson.
Knocking out Mike Tyson does not make you Mike Tyson. Knocking out Mike Tyson just makes you somebody who knocked out Mike Tyson.
Weird to say that when Tyson couldn't do shit against Holyfield as well.
@@joaomenegalebarbi1586 Tyson was a different fighter in 1996 than he was in 1988.
Not Holyfield's problem. Still schooled both Tyson and Douglas. And let's remember, Holyfield is four years older than Tyson.
@@joaomenegalebarbi1586 Doesn't matter. Tyson was a different fighter before he fired Rooney. Holyfield did not fight Tyson in his prime.
Douglas just didn't want to be there. Didn't even try to get up. Complete opposite of the fighter who wanted to win so bad against Tyson.
Holyfield was Holyfield, scared of no one and ready and willing to take the fight to anyone.
Announcer:"This is gonna be a chess game for a while."
Holyfield:"Checkmate."
Douglas:"BURGER KING ME!!!"
LMAO!
He was too hurt to continue.
@@DanielSong39 no he wasnt nigga he layed down
Tyson lost that fight, because he did not prepare properly and was confident that he could win easily. Tyson may have been one of the greats, but that fight was sadly the end of his career. He's amazing how mediocre a fighter Douglas could beat Tyson.
@victoralarconhernandez2616 Mike Tyson fought Mediocre fighters his whole career... a bum knockout artist
6:11 Can you hear Evanders Punch makes a air sound pretty hard swing
Nah I think it’s just his foot scraping the canvas when he turned his foot for more power with that cross that he threw.

This was Holyfield’s prime. He was TOUGH at this weight. Has speed, power, and crazy endurance. His speed and endurance really left him in later years. This version of Holyfield could beat anyone.
Holyfield good?
Not Mohammed Ali, and Joe Louis.
Evander Holyfield was such a machine, incredible boxer. Respect to Douglas as well, the original Tyson slayer. Both legends of the sport
Back then, If Tyson had a proper rematch with Douglas he would've won 😂
I love holyfields stance with the hopping i see it helps him gets into rhythm and to feel for his opponents rhythm too also allows him to slip in and out reminds me of Bruce lees stance against Chuck Norris
James Douglas was a very good boxer.
His misfortune was that he faced Evander Holyfield, who was in his true prime.
Had douglas won this he'd be an all time great...beating primes tyson n Holyfield in back to back fights in the one year..
If Douglas would have won this match holyfield wouldn't be holyfield

Tyson was a fluke, Tyson didn't prepare for the fight, he didn't studied Douglas, he partied before the fight.
Didn’ttttttt beat prime Tyson bro 😂 prime Tyson is when he was with he trainer kevin Rooney
@@KokutenNoKamiDa If your under 30 years old and past your prime you were never that good in the first place. Tyson was great and he was in his prime. He did party but that doesnt change the fact that when Douglas was mentally focused he was one of the best fighters in the world. Douglas was a head case with an amazing jab and really good fundamentals. If he was not the head case that he was he would have went down as one of the greatest of all time.
Holyfields technique was just incredible in this fight
Prime Evander was something unlike we've ever seen in boxing. Such a unique style and unique person. It's a shame be had to fight Buster here and not Iron Mike.

James Buster "Jelly Tits" Douglas, came into this particular fight out of shape, obviously. When he fought Tyson, he came in in tremendous shape & I don't think anyone could beat Jelly Tits that night. He boxed beautifully. Damn near Ali like abilities. This night was Jelly Titties ability.
@Liberalism is a Cult his mother died 2 weeks before tyson fight. He poured his heart and soul into that fight. Afterwards he simply lost his motivation, its clear his mother had a profound impact on him. Perhaps if he lost against tyson, he might have retained that inner fire.

Lotta comments about how Buster could have gotten up if he wanted to. If that’s true then Moorer could have just chosen to get up against Foreman. Two well-placed heavyweight punches - same result, the way I see it.

Douglas was definitely in better shape when he fought Tyson. Holyfield is probably one of the worst fighters to go in with poorly trained, he may not be the biggest puncher, but he is relentless and he isn't going to tire.
