3 nights later - warm night July 6th, 1973 Expos beat Astros twice. Game 1 John Boccabella, 2 HR in the same inning. Dad's employer owned 4 box seat 1st base tickets. If my sister didn't attend, we invited a guest. Before the game my friend Denis dined with us at Bill Wong's on Decarie Blvd. Then not knowing it was a twinight doubeheader, dad turned on the car radio in his 1973 Dodge Charger SE. Expos were losing 7-4 after 5 innings. But as we appraoched the park cheers and roars grew louder! By the time we were seated, Bocabella led off the Expos 6th with a solo HR. He batted again, same inning, bases loaded and hits a Grand Slam! Expos won 12-8 and the nightcap 14-6. Great memories from a well loved early Expos player...
I was extremely National League centric back then even the umpires in the National League seemed superior to those in the American League. The ones you mentioned plus. Chris Pelekoudas, Dutch Rennert, Ed Sudol (extra innings Ed), Augie Donatelli. Doug Harvey just to mention a few more. Unfortunately, the game stinks today, I haven’t watched it in years.
I wish the next night's game would be uploaded; it was a Wednesday night Expos Baseball telecast on CBC. The Mets took a 5-0 lead on homers by George Theodore (his first), Willie Mays (his third-last), and Duffy Dyer, with Tom Seaver taking a no-hitter into the 6th. I won't give away the ending, but it got exciting.
Yes, and they pushed the World Series to the limit. Had they won, they'd have been the worst team ever (82-79) to win a WS. The 2006 St. Louis Cardinals (83-78) hold that distinction, beating Detroit 4 games to 1.
I heard some of this game at work today in California--thank you for it! As I told you, it was played at Jarry Park in Montreal 44 years ago, with Rusty Staub returning to Canada with the Mets (he used to play for the Expos before they traded him to New York in 1972--and the Montreal fans were too upset about that trade, and then there was a players' strike)! The Mets--at least in that game played in 1973--played like it was 1962 again (lol)! Thx!
If I am not mistaken that Rusty Staub trade involved Ken Singleton ( who had a very good career in Baltimore ), Tim Foli and Mike Jorgensen. I was only 6 years old when that trade took place. And since I do not believe in cheating, I am doing this off of memory.
I know! If they'd have won the World Series that year, they'd have been the worst team ever (82-79) to do so. They, in fact, scored more runs in the Series than did the A's (their opponent that year), but the team that scores more runs in a series doesn't always win.
are you freakin serious???? wait a sec. we have youtube vids today. we have internet, we have amazing technology. we have netflix, we have a world out there.. and u mean to tell me there is actually ppl out there that sat here and listened to a 3 hr screen of a game that took place over 44 yrs ago?? NO visual, just listen to it? wow, and i thought i had no life. Who would do this? pls respond to me so i can feel better about myself. I mean, i can understand if we were able to watch this, but man, to sit here and listen for 3 hrs. WOW. I think u guys all need to get out of the house more often.
+claude878878 Wow what a stupid comment, it never occurred to you that people can listen to this in the background while doing other things? As to why, maybe they like this era of baseball maybe it brings back memories for them.
no one is more nostalgic than me. i loved the 70s, i was a kid and i loved baseball too. I miss my expos. i miss carter, dawson raines.. i have great memories too. To watch any game from that era is ok.. and even to listen to it for 10 min, maybe 15 min.. but man,, to sit there and just listen to a radio for 3 hrs.. come on.. u must be kidding me. there is just so much more options out there. if u had no tv, no internet and just a radio, then fine. but come on. to listen for 3 hrs?? u really must have alot of free time.
+claude878878 Well at least you're an old Expos fan, that's cool. I used to listen to Expos ballgames on the radio all the time as a kid It's kind of nostalgic and also relaxing for me and as I said I often like to have some audio thing playing on RUclips in the background when I'm doing other stuff and can't devote attention to watching something. These old ballgame broadcasts are good for that.
my best memory as a kid was lying on the bed listening to Dave and Duke. boy was it great. it was better than tv. just hearing dave's voice. wow, i wish i can turn back time. where did my life go ? i was just starting my life at around 12 yrs old at opening day in 77 at the big O. now im' an old fart at 52, and closer to death. But dave and duke were so fun to listen to, and like u said, very relaxing. I can listen for hrs. I still have the memory in my head..... Duke- Well, we're just about set, to bring u the action,, here's Dave...... Dave- Thx Duke, and hi again everybody, glad to have u aboard for this afternoon's game... ................. that's how it started every game. it was the happiest words to hear. the expos will be back within 3 yrs, and even if they do come back, it'll never be the same as it was when we were kids....agree? when you're a kid, everything is great. it was great going to the big 0 with all my friends and taking the metro and going to see a Sun afternoon game with 48,000 fans....my god was it fun.... now we are older and it just won't be the same if they came back. Unless they bring back the Kid, hawk and raines, and make me 15 again, it won't be good.
About 22:22-"John Boc-a-bellllllll-a"! Always used to love hearing Claude Mouton say that name when the Mets were playing the Expos in Montreal.
