My dad would gather wood outside, cut it up; put down some kindling and newspaper to get it going, then place heavy branch pieces, then logs on top, and light it. It would go for an hour at least, and my brothers and I - at about 7, 8 yrs old, would lay on our sides and gaze at it, mesmerized, and all warm and toasty.
