Bo is one of the first youtubers yes!!! He was 16 and posted vids for his family to make them laugh and they blew upp. Thanks for doing my suggestion!!! Love the reaction you should just keep going down the Bo line and do his next song called "a love ballad" by the way my whole family is the worst quality of all his stuff so it only gets better

The Bible Camp line was probably a reference to kids having their first gay experiences at camp. It's a prime place to experiment because you're there with kids you've never met before and will likely never see again. No pressure, no judgement.

Bo is definitely an OG of RUclips. I second recommending going from earliest to latest videos.

Funny how back in the day his shows were 21+ when he wrote half the material when he was 15.

Bo does non-music bits as well, but all of his shows have a large amount of songs.
For example, he has a bit during one of his specials where he is reciting funny Haikus without music. I think he actually does poetry bits in a couple of his specials.
But he typically does a bit of non music comedy in between most songs.
Also, most of his better RUclips songs got updated versions that he performed on stage for a Comedy Central half hour special that was filmed on his 18th birthday, including an improved version of My Whole Family.
One of my favorite songs of his is called Art is Dead.

I've been keeping up with Bo's stuff since my brother showed me an early RUclips video back around 2005/2006 for the song Bo Yo. His career has been so fascinating to watch.
He also wrote and directed an award winning feature film called 8th Grade.

As others have said, he's 16. By the time he was 18 he had his own episode of Comedy Central Presents. If you see him on stage in a tie dye tee, thats the episode.
Don't let the next block of text lose you, please. Tldr; I explain the Bible camp line and where that came from. Afterwards I give important context for this video that unfortunately most Bo fans don't have. Scroll to the bottom if you want a full tldr.
The Bible Camp line was because as someone else said a lot of stuff goes down at camp, exploration wise, but also, as someone who went to Bible camp every year until my youth group stopped doing them (cause we're all poor and those camps are expensive), they are really good at keeping girls and boys apart re: cabins/rooms/bed in general). I can only remember one year where you could even potentially see inside the boys rooms (me being a young lady) and that was a year when our association of churches (because we'd go in joint with 5 or 6 other groups to help with cost, but they also were churches in the area the same denomination, so like sister churches) changed venue and our group was housed at the Lodge, so instead of our normal two giant rooms of bunkbeds we had rooms of 2 bunkbeds right beside each other. Anyway, because of this separation (including back to when Bible camp was literal camping and they'd be 2-3 a pop up tent) the only people to explore with were "same sex." The same things were common with boyscouts/eaglescouts and boarding schools because sexually curious kids, for lack of a better word, will still be curious. He was also raised going to church so I'd put money down that he went to at least one Bible camp.
So for context, Bo's clique in school was the theater kids. It's one reason he knows so much about production, how to set and meet cues so well, etc. His comedy which does involve interludes of spoken stand up (he also wrote a book of poems called Egghead) isn't improv, its carefully rehearsed and memorized so that he can't even take a break, during his 2 specials *what.* and *Make Happy*, to cough or take an extra breath. That's what he knew and that was his comfort space. But it also meant during the 2 recorded performances of *Make Happy* (because they double up and record twice in the same day in case of mistakes), he performed the first time having a panic attack through most of the show. He was hitting his cues sometimes on the inhale. He cried a lot after and most of the performance we see in the Netflix special is from his second performance.
Anyway, theater kids. So he now hates this song. In 2018, he was doing a radio show and they played this song for the audience. Bo had to remove his headphones. He literally couldn't bear listening to it.
In a different interview, he was asked about this song and if he got mistaken for gay a lot as a teen. He responded, "I didn't know I wasn't." Gay/queer teens are not in shortage in theater cliques. He grew up with friends who were discovering they were queer when he wrote this (and I'm using queer because I want to be inclusive of all the other identities that also flock to theater including my own which is neither gay nor straight).
Bo was asked then about the song being mistaken for homophobic and he again responded in a way that might surprise people with, "I'm not sure it isn't." Roughly, he stated that his intention with the song is meaningless (intention here meaning not to be homophobic) if it still hurts people. If queer teens saw it and got upset or offended, then yea its probably homophobic.
That's one thing about Bo that his stage persona leaves behind. He's very thoughtful. When he was accused of doing comedy only 13 yo girls would like and kept getting swamped by 13 yo girls after his show he was like hell yea my comedy is for them. That's why he wrote *8th Grade* (a movie from 2018). He's evolved overtime and choses his words more carefully. One of his white boards during the song Comedy in *Inside* had a flowchart for deciding if something is funny and one of the disqualifiers was if the joke punches down. That is, if he, a straight white rich man, held social privilege over a systemically marginalized group along any of those axises. If it punches down, the flowchart says, then it's not funny. If it could be interpreted as mean it's also not funny.
tldr; Bo wrote this song when he was 15-16 and posted it at 16 while he still wasn't sure of his own sexual identity. Friends of his were coming out around that time. He is now ashamed of this song and has stated that even in comedy intention doesn't matter. If people get hurt, intention doesn't absolve you. Bo also is relatable to 13yo girls and wrote a movie for them called *8th Grade*.

Bible Camp reference is bc teens tend to sexually experiment.

Harry Mack fan that subscribed because of your reaction to those videos. I saw Bo back in the day and you should continue with his older stuff as well. He was amazing and still is. His new stuff is great too, just check where he started so you can understand some new references. The Bible camp reference, I assumed was regarding catholic priests. I could be wrong but if you watch one of his earlier songs I think he made a reference to that situation. Keep up the reactions, I enjoy the Harry Mack and Bo Burnham videos my dude!

A lot of bos early work is like this. Incredibly witty and funny. Its only when he started doing hour long specials did he start to try to get "deep". Which a lot of people like, but I like goofy young bo a bit more. It seems trying to live up to his past greatness literally sent him to into a mental spiral (based on songs like 'kanye rant') so I guess even Bo knows that his early stuff is genius. Songs like "Im bo yo" "New Math" "words words words." are some of the classics.

The Bible Camp thing I think he might have made out with someone.
And I was like well maybe your bi.
But then I was like well is he in the closet or is he bisexual because the song makes it sound like he's oblivious or really stubborn.

You need to watch Inside like you suggested in the other video ... It's more powerful if you watch it as he presents it instead of out of order like ... welcome to the internet, white woman's instagram and all the others. It's so good ... You thought the lightning and stuff was good on welcome to the internet? You have not seen what his creativity is like ... Words Words Words shows how cleaver he is with world play. He's beyond a genius in so much of his stuff.
