    What a detailed and informative video of our Beloved Prophet & Religion!! True, he was most certainly a philosopher & would be to all non-Zoroastrians, even today. You are obviously a scholar, and a master mind, who has spent years studying, researching & finding much that is worth sharing about this faith. A Hindustani Parsi from India, I was not only interested, but impressed, educated & enlightened - You wowed me with your vast knowledge of the subject, especially because this is a very ancient & difficult faith to research, let alone get to know so much about. There was a wealth of info. in this video that sheds light on so much more than the basics. Sincere Thanks for your dedication - You certainly did Zoroastrianism & Zarathustra much justice. I consider myself privileged to be born a Zoroastrian in India instead of Iran, (since Parsis in India are a peace-loving, accommodating & thriving lot, who don't practice or encourage conversion as a rule) Proud to be Zoroastrian by choice (using my mind & exercising my Free Will, as Zarathustra would profess) Although I come from a long line of Zoroastrians, my parents were not very religious or rigid in their beliefs. I went to a Catholic school & favor Hinduism & Buddhism, so my faith, belief & prayers involve a little bit of others, and much of the Zoroastrian faith. As age & wisdom set in, I have come to believe that Good & God are ONE. I feel certain that it is precisely what Zarathustra would want me to believe. With Much Gratitude, I wish you well. Namaste🙏Ushta-te from USA!!

    • @wingnutmcspazatron3957
      @wingnutmcspazatron3957 Год назад +3

      The "tough guy in charge" is to be a man capable of establishing order. Ethical living cannot happen in a godless society without a military. Nobody respects a man who can't handle his own. The "ethical living" you speak of is the whole point of God's design of government, the law, and those tasked with upholding it. What you're saying does not make sense.

    Most of my RUclips recommendations are related to Buddhism, physics, deep spiritual videos (related to Eastern concepts) or music, and so on. Yet this was a really pleasant surprise, and I really enjoyed it. It's rare for a documentary-type video to hold my attention for this long outside of what I'm usually interested in. To find that this is this channel's first video too and so well put together is amazing. The music, the storytelling, and the concepts laid out in laymen's terms put together has accomplished what many other similar channels fail to do. Keep up the great work!

      Here is what Baha'u'llah said about Zoroaster: In Baha'u'llah's writings, Zoroaster is referred to as "Him Who is the Spirit of purity". Baha'u'llah moreover goes on to write "...the fire-temples of the world stand as eloquent testimony to this truth. In their time they summoned, with burning zeal, all the inhabitants of the earth [to him]."
      Baha'is see Zoroaster as a Manifestation of God sent with a Message tailored to the needs of that day. In a sense, Baha'is see Zoroaster and Baha'u'llah as the same Spirit, like Spiritual Mirrors reflecting the Light of God to humanity. The same can be said of Jesus, Buddha, Muhammed and Krishna.
      This is a beautiful presentation of a part of mankind's spiritual history which most people are unaware of.

    A couple of things. First, I cover Akhenaten, who most likely came after Zarathushtra by 200-400 years, so actually watch my video before commenting that. Philosophy may more accurately mean friend of wisdom, or lover of wisdom. My expertise doesn’t lie here, but if so, this proves my point even more as man’s relationship to Ahura Mazda was always as a friend or coworker.
    Secondly, it seems there wasn’t three magi, only three gifts. It doesn’t affect any of my points, but that is a mistake on my end. I also forgot to mention Zoroastrianism has always been a gender equal religion. Zarathushtra consistently directs his message to men and women (when the meter allowed), and later tradition often mentioned female priests, leaders, and warriors.

    Ashem, I've watched both of your videos on Zoroastrianism (at the time of writing) several times over the course of 2023. As a Sikh, it's always surreal to see the shades of Zarathustra touching even my own faith. We Sikhs claim Waheguru as our "Wondrous Teacher," but I was surprised with joy to hear that the Zoroastrians claim Ahura Mazda as their "Lord Wisdom." Also, your remark about God not being all-powerful in a non-Abrahamic belief system is something I've vaguely felt but could never articulate until I heard you say it. I don't wanna write out a huge essay in a comment, but your videos thus far have truly resonated with me in ways I never expected. I'm grateful for the algo recommending me your content on a sleepless work night so many months ago.
    I've been subscribed for months now, and I'm not sure if (or when) you'll translate the Gathas, but my notification bell's on for such an occasion. In the interim, may you please give some recommended reading? I saw a comment of yours on Esoterica's video about Zoroastrians along with recommendations for the translation of the Gathas. That's definitely on my backlog, but what else is there?

So I have decided to seek a philological or linguistic degree in Avestan and other related languages. It's so intresting how simple and yet complex the philosophy of Zarathustra. The idea of no such thing as objectivity and how people live their own perceptions. How even now, we do not know that we are even seeing what we are seeing. That perceiving is not necessarily living.
    And how darkness is not evil, but the absence of light and good. There cannot be just light for there to be a balance.
    The language is very complex and religious, but it's so damn scientific and logical.

      The core idea of Zoroastrianism is that the world is meant to progress towards its perfect state. Everything and everyone is somewhere along that line. This is the core idea, and why Zarathushtra is often referred to as having a utopian vision. It was that exact mix of science/logic and spirituality that caused me to convert from agnosticism. There are so many fascinating ideas covered in the Gathas. But the importance of intellect or reasoning is clearly. In the first stanza of the Gathas we get this “By which I may satisfy the intellect of my good mind and the soul of the earth”
      May your pursuit of understanding bear fruit

    Of the videos on Zoroastrianism that I've viewed so far, yours is the most unique in that you're focusing on the Gathas which are the only writings of Zarathushtra that have come down to us. I myself own and have read Mary Boyce's book Zoroastrians: Their Religious Beliefs and Practices which I've referred to after watching each video here on RUclips. But again, I really like what you've done in your video because I firmly believe that the original message of a faith so often gets distorted or even altered once the messanger as passed away. In the course of my almost 69 years, I've tried a few orthodoxies, but none of them fulfilled the longing that I still have to this day. So far, Zoroastrianism speaks to me in a special way because I also read ancient Greek philosophy and am currently deep into the life and teachings of Pythagoras who came into contact with certain Magi when he was in Babylon. I'm seeing Zoroastrian influences in his philosophy which others seem to have ignored. Anyway, thank you so much for this wonderful video.

    • @ashemvidam
      @ashemvidam  6 месяцев назад

      Thank you so much for your wonderful thoughts. Mary Boyce has done some decent work, but I wouldn’t treat her as the end all be all in any ways (I have other thoughts i will leave off). I agree 100% that there are many Zoroastrian influences in greek Philosophy. I have become much more convinced of this fact in the year and a half since i made this video. Particularly, Plato seems to have adapted a lot of his ideas from now missing Avestan books, in particular from the Damdad and Nadar Nask (two volumes of what the greeks called Peri Physeos) Along with other books of philosophy found in the Haða-manthra, although the Zoroastrian account of these books admits most of it was lost after Alexander. They say he took the books on science, philosophy, and medicine and burnt the rest. Later, Pliny the Elder says that there were 2 million lines by Zoroaster to be found in the library of Alexander (most likely Avestan books attributed to him, as well as potentially a few greek ones), which a Hermippus of Smyrna did a deep investigation of. Sadly none of that survives, nor the many Iranian libraries burnt by Alexander or the Muslims.
      Im very glad you like my Gatha centered approach, and I am glad you have found such an intellectual comfort in Zoroastrianism and the Gathas. If you need assistance connecting with other Zoroastrians please email me and i can help. I have connections with the CZC, FEZANA, and the Zarathushtrian Assembly.

      @@ashemvidamThank you so much for your informative reply. I would have to agree that Mary Boyce might be somewhat dated. That's why I'm waiting for a copy of the Wiley Blackwell Companion to Zoroastrianism. I recognise the fact that I've only really scratched the surface of this incredible faith. However, I do know Fezana having downloaded Taraporewala's The Divine Songs of Zarathushtra for that website. I haven't studied it yet. I've just relied on the Kessinger Legacy reprint of D.J. Irani's very simple translation. In any event, I thank you much for your kind response. Of course, I subscribed to your channel here and look forward to more enlightening videos.

      @ashemvidam  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you! Irach Taraporewala’s book is good, with some caveats. He details the grammar of the Gathas pretty well, but his linguistic analysis isn’t the most robust. The Wiley Blackwell companion is good as well, but just pay attention to who is writing which article. Some of the scholars in Zoroastrianism are notorious for having “bad takes” so to say. It’s honestly very tricky, which is why I plan to become a scholar of Zoroastrianism. I wish you the best of luck with your studies of Zoroastrianism, and please email me if you need help connecting with other Zoroastrians!

    My brother, I appreciate your work and this is the third video. I’m listening to your work is very important and your research is very strong, and the presentation is clean with current intentions. I can feel it.
    I have come to learn that the most overlook step or part of any journey is there very very very beginning.
    Yes, Zarathustra is from “Eastern Iran”, it’s called Afghanistan.
    It is well understood that he was born in Balkh, Afghanistan, which is where Rumí was born as well.
    As a matter of fact, if you ask any Hindu scholar, they say that Hinduism was between 5000 and 5500 years ago, based off of the first books of the Upanishad and the Vedas. They say that these books were brought to India by “the invading Arian armies.”
    5000 years ago, modern day Afghanistan was called “Aryana/Ariana”.
    The problem with reading everything in the modern language of English, is that history filters through a British lens. And after three failed invasion attempts by the British lead from British controlled India in Afghanistan in the 1900s, all of Afghan history was washed through the British lens and called “Indo-Persian.
    Well, what is in between India and Persia? It’s called Afghanistan.
    So all poets, warriors, prophets, and collective history from Afghanistan, becomes appropriated to Persian or Indian culture.
    On a sidenote, after the the death of Islamic prophet Mohammed, the invading Arab armies, went from Arabia east, and conquer straight through Iran.
    Halfway through Iran, the priest, Magi, and keepers of these temples and wisdom Stored what they could, and cleanse the temples, thus accepting Islam. Less than 60 years after this, you begin to see great works of what is now known as Sufism emerging from “eastern Persia, and the western lands of Afghanistan.
    Within 80 years, Sufism was thriving and spreading. Thus Sufi were Austrian priests who accepted and adapted, Islam, Inc., Zoroastrian, philosophy into Islam.
    Ron is one of the most important wisdom to ever be conceived and shared upon our earth and it is important for us to revive this now more than ever .
    🙏🏼

    Talk to any genuinely educated and objective-individual he or she will mention they are an extraordinary people. Though they have small numbers they are survivors thus this great civilization will not only survive but flourish. Like us Jat-Sikhs they only marry in their own clan thus have kept their pure Aryan ethnicity, their culture, religion in its purity. However if they get pseudo-westernized and mix outside their clan they will not only lose all but become extinct. Understanding them they will not only survive but in purity. An authentic and objective article on them in BBC News: The obscure religion that shaped the West
    I was in Iran and many Iranians are proud of their Aryan-Zoroastrian past so are many Tajiks I bumped into.

    Zoroaster was the first to publish and record his learnings and feelings about life. What I now know about life at 69 is monumentally different from what I thought I knew at 45. All the religions and even some of the philosophies have signature thoughts and ideas of this man. I call on everyone to be wise observers of life itself. We must understand the greater picture this young man understands. I do believe that all the prophets received knowledge from some writing and oral discourse stemming from Zoroastrianism. My understanding is that the Hindus claim they have writings going back 7,000 years. Is that true? Thank you.

    • @ashemvidam
      @ashemvidam  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you for such kind words. The oldest texts of Hinduism are the 4 Vedas, and the RgVeda is the largest and oldest of them. The oldest and middle parts date back to 4000-3000 years ago. The language of Zarathushtra is very similar, yet distinct, to the RgVeda. It’s either dated to the middle of the RgVeda, or to the beginning.
      The best scholarship I’ve seen on the language of Zarathushtra dates him to the earliest parts of the RgVeda. That is by Robert Beekes. I find his dating to be off as he ignores archeological evidence. But he has Zarathushtra’s language to be as old as the oldest parts of the RgVeda.
      So some Hindus may claim 7,000 years, but only some of the oldest parts of the RgVeda date back to 4,000 years at most. And most of the Hindu sacred texts are more like 2500-1500 years old. It’s also worth noting the religion of the RgVeda is the ancestor of modern Hinduism, but very different from what any Hindus practice.
      All that’s to say that both Zarathushtra and the oldest Hindu texts are very roughly 4000-3700 years old

      Possibly, I’m a Zoroastrian so I’m very familiar with my religion and it’s philosophy. But less so with others. Yazidism is similar in many to Zoroastrianism, and it likely evolved from a local version of Zoroastrianism in that area, which then began to be syncretic with later Abrahamic religions and local beliefs. You can see a very similar belief system with old Armenian “paganism” (which was just Zoroastrianism mixed with some local deities).
      Let me clarify about Armenia. There were genuine Zoroastrians in the country up until the Romans began to persecute them. But the general pagan religion also included the worship of Mazda and the amesha spentas, as well as some old Iranian deities the Medes had added back in (that’s important as the Medes would have been geographically closest to the Armenians)

    According to the teachings of Zarathushtra in the Gathas: good and evil are the two essences (Mainyus) born at the beginning of creation in the mind and dreams, one is progressive and the other, regressive. One is the path of Truth which is constructive, and the other is the path of Druj or the lies in which, by resorting to Wrath, one brings destruction to the living world. All men and women should ponder and with free will, by considering the end results, choose one of the two paths. There should be no compromise in this great choice. The reward of choosing the Truth is the bright mind and Spiritual Relief (Heaven), the end result of the wrong choice of Druj, is the dark mind or Inner Torment (Hell). Both are discerned in Conscience. So, heaven and hell are the two states of mind in the living world and they have no physical locations and depictions. As noticed there is no personification of evil and no entity such as demon, bad god or Satan exist is the mindset of Zarathushtra. Likewise, there is no mention of demon or bad god in the Achaemenian inscriptions that one should fear or worship out of fear. As noticed, in those teachings man is responsible for the choice of good or evil, and God is not responsible for the existence of evil in the living world

    • @donaldmoderational5338
      @donaldmoderational5338 Год назад +1

      As every person chooses the path of life, he/she determines his destiny and fate. Considering the fact that freedom of choice and free will form the quintessence of the teachings of Zarathushtra, our fate is determined by ourselves and no one is condemned by pre-ordained fate. Likewise, there is no room for blind faith, coercive conversion, slavery and exploitation. Also humans are born free of sin. Sin however, is the result of wrong choice through bad judgment at the great moment of decision in our life.

    I like the spirit in which you have done this video. Personally, I know little about Zarathustra, but I keep finding that his understanding about life matches my own--the high expectations of human beings to use our intelligence and conscience, our responsibility to use choice for turning bad things to good, to put the very best of ourselves to work in this life. I'm American, so of course my people think I am a chump, but I live those truths anyway. But also, the mainyu. This is a spiritual path as well, and I've seen those paths that connect to all things in this creation. I call them the sacred, and I've seen where they lead. Can you talk more about that? What Zoroastrians say? Also, please don't exchange the word bad for evil. They are not the same. Evil is a small domain. Bad is a very broad one which most of us inhabit, and we need to admit that. Thanks.

    • @ashemvidam
      @ashemvidam  Год назад +1

      I’m not sure what your exact question is, but I will try to respond. One could see the mainyus as the spiritual realm, but I would more so say the realm of spirituality is emergent from the mainyus. I personally see spirituality as being deeply related to the meaning of things. But interestingly enough Zarathushtra doesn’t say much, or I haven’t found it. The Gathas are encoded with deep meaning, so I’d recommend searching there to see what truth you can find.
      In Avestan we have the word “aka” which means bad, evil, wrong, etc. so my conflating them was reflecting of their not being a direct distinction between bad and evil in Avestan. But I will keep that in mind

      The mainyus, as I see them, and I mean as a seer, not a thinker, are paths of possibility, I never meant or tried to be a seer. I've just always been like that. So, as I see, beings in this creation who have no choice can hook themselves onto ones who do have choice. If you or I follow the sacred path, they can come too. We can corrupt them any which way we like, which seems to be what we prefer. But along the mainyus, we can hook them and carry them with us on a different journey with a higher goal. Does that make sense?

      Yes that makes sense, and is how the term mainyu was likely meant to be used. The Indo-Iranians (formerly known as Aryans) were a very philosophical group. I appreciate your insight into the matter. Here is a stanza composed by Zarathushtra that may be of import to you.
      Yasna 31.5 (my translation)
      Speak that for me to discern what has been created for me through Asha as the more good
      For me to know by my good thinking and bear in mind what I am to be a seer of
      Even those, Lord Wisdom, that either will not be or will be
      My own caution to you. As a seer, you still are open to the deception, and to being deceived in general. You are still responsible to use your good thinking (vohu manangha) and intellect/reasoning (xratush) to discern whether those vision are from Asha (the truth) or not. Zoroastrianism has always embraced mystery and mysticism. You are welcome here, and I think you may find much understanding and insight in the Gathas of Zarathushtra.
      May you find wisdom

      @@ashemvidam Thank you for.the thoughtful answer, and yes, I know a good bit about deception, being deceived or deceiving my own self. When I was young, I was dumb and understood nothing, I had no teachers, so I learned a lot of things the hard way. But it was clear to me that there were a lot of things wrong with us human beings, the way we behaved and the way we were living, and I didn't want to be like that anymore. So, I decided to change. It took me years. I started learning the ways of nature, cultivating real respect for it, treating my own mind and body with more respect too. I took spiritual matters seriously and treated those with respect as well. And I found that life responds to that. It wants you to do it more, so I did. Now that I am much older, I've been looking for signs of others who've followed similar paths with similar results, and I like very much how Zarathustra sounds. I've ordered his book, but it's not here yet. I think we had something good there when people listened to him and I will be happy to know if your people still uphold those traditions. Looking forward to your next post

      You ordered the Avesta. What you want is the Gathas. Check my description for the copies I recommend. Most of the Avesta isn’t all that interesting unless you’re a scholar

    As a Neo-pagan I think wise Pagan minds like Zarathushtra's is wisdom I should add to my religious texts.
